4 UIPM TETRATHLON U19 World Championship Caldas da Rainha - TUGAL Welcome to: Caldas da Rainha Caldas da Rainha, the host of UIPM Tetratlhon Under 19 World Championships, from April 8 to 14, has a great history of Modern Pentathlon international competitions. That s a sport s friend city, holder of execellent sports facilities, such as the venues where the championships will be played - the Municipal Sports Complex and the High Performance Center, par exemple. This city, 100km away from Lisbon, is also, par excellence, a city of arts, with vast artistic and cultural heritage, especially in the fields of painting, sculpture, ceramics production, fine arts and design. The city breathes creativity where tradition joins contemporary art. having at its disposal a vast museological heritage, cultural events and one of the best cultural and congress centers of the country. As a city with cosmopolitan traditions, Caldas da Rainha is a center of a region of landscapes with diversified activities. The springs, to which the founding of this town is associated with, has given her a dinamic comercial activity, backed by many of its cultural attactions. Its pottery industry plays an importante role on this local art, making it to be na all mark of Caldas. The agriculture within its immediate surroundings, from early days, supplies this urban center and it is the reason for the local market within the country. Along the nearby coastline, its tall, Sharp cliffs surprises the visitor with the Shell-like bay of Saint Martin (S. Martinho), where the beach of Salir do Porto is found, and the Obidos Lagoon with its beach of Foz do Arelho; both these localities are appreciated for their ambiental and touristic attractions. 4

6 Welcome Message of the UIPM President Dear athletes, coaches, officials, guests and spectators, It is my pleasure to welcome the youth of the world to Caldas da Rainha, Portugal where the Portuguese Modern Pentathlon Federation will provide excellent organization and wonderful hospitality. Youth development is a very important pillar for our Modern Pentathlon movement and this UIPM Under 19 World Championships gives our best teenage athletes another opportunity to qualify for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Caldas da Rainha has already organized UIPM s Junior World Championships and other international competitions to a high standard. It is a pleasure to be back in a sport-friendly city with a great host, and this week will be a celebration of Portuguese hospitality and sport. Through the exhibition Pentathlon and the Baron Pierre de Coubertin, young athletes are learning more about the heritage of our Olympic movement and the founder of Modern Pentathlon. These educational and other cultural activities will be open to the public.my thanks go to the national federation, national and local Government, the National Olympic Committee and volunteers, as well as the sponsors and suppliers for all their financial and logistical support. Let us enjoy these exciting days in a spirit of fair play, respect, friendship and harmony. Let us support the legacy of Pierre de Coubertin and our grass roots the youth. 7 Welcome Message of the LOC President On behalf of the Portuguese Modern Pentathlon Federation and the Local Organizing Committee I would like to welcome all the participants of the U19 World Championships that will take place from April 8th until 14th in Caldas da Rainha. Portugal has been hosting major international events for the past decade, for the third time in its history, a World Championship following 2007 Junior WCH and 2008 World Cup Final, both in Caldas as well, and looking forward now this 2018 U19 WCH. This also means that the best worldwide athletes, from the formation to the elite of the modern pentathlon have Portugal as a competitive gateway in their careers. Caldas da Rainha owns an exemplary sports complex, being this town characterized by the hospitality and sympathy of its population. The town council policy reflects its concern with the promotion of health and wellbeing through diversified sport activities, and the modern pentathlon is not more than the symbolism of that strategic universality. It is with enormous pride that we accepted the challenge for hosting this competition of the UIPM calendar on the road to the Youth Olympic Games. With this, on one hand, Portugal sends a message to the international community stating the will to continue in the first line of the organization of great international events. On the other hand, it shares the vision that this type of initiatives contributes to the maturity of a new generation of qualified athletes foreseeing the preservation of the future of modern pentathlon.i would like to thank the local authority of Caldas da Rainha, Dr. Tinta Ferreira, for all the hospitality and sympathy demonstrated in the support for this event. The athletic season starts an important stage concerning the conquest of goals for these young athletes, but nothing better than doing it in the spirit of healthy competition, raising the values of respect, friendship and fraternization. A final word of gratitude must go also to the foreign delegations that visit us; our votes of the best athletic successes and we certainly know that the lovely city of Caldas da Rainha and this Championships will remain on their memories. 14 Modern Pentathlon Did You Know...? AIM OF THE GAME Athletes compete in fencing, swimming and horse riding, followed by a combined running and shooting event, with the first to cross the line winning the gold medal. And all of this happens on one day! CHARACTERISTICS With its mixture of physical and mental demands that test courage, stamina, coordination, concentration, skill and flexibility plus a generous dose of unpredictability this event has a strong claim to producing the most complete athlete. THE ORIGIN Just as the ancient pentathlon was based on the skills needed to be a soldier, the modern pentathlon was devised to test the abilities required by a cavalry soldier. Pentathlon was first held in the ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC and consisted of running, long jump, spear throwing, discus and wrestling. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games, created modern pentathlon, comprising the five events that continue until today. KEY TERMS Handicap start In the final event (running and shooting), the overall leader starts first and his/ her rivals start afterwards, at intervals based on their point tallies. Épée The type of weapon used in the fencing, competitors are allowed to hit any part of the opponent s body. Bonus round New part of the fencing competition that gives athletes the chance to win bonus points, after the round-robin ranking round. 14
