CIDESCO IntErnatIOnal link CIDESCO INSIDE 3 Ongoing Commitment Honorary President of CIDESCO still active and serving in Beauty Therapy By CIDESCO Staff Editor Ursula van Deelen began her career in Beauty therapy in 1972 when she opened her own beauty salon; having completed Further Education training in the Netherlands in 1978, she became a member of CIDESCO and started teaching in two CIDESCO Accredited Schools, in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. During these years besides teaching and training, she had been an active member of CIDESCO Section Netherlands and particularly involved in CIDESCO matters. In 1983, at the CIDESCO General Assembly in Hamburg, she was elected CIDESCO Board Member for Education. During her term in office, the CIDESCO Education Committee was formed and there was a substantial growth in CIDESCO Education, with her contribution being very significant. After two terms (8 years) on the CIDESCO Board of Directors she became President of CIDESCO Section Netherlands and in 1990 organized together with the National Association ANBOS, the CIDESCO World Congress and Exhibition. This Congress was very successful with 1600 participants. In 1992 at the General Assembly in Cyprus, Ursula was elected President of CIDESCO International for 4 years. Her work and determination were of tremendous importance to CIDESCO and this has been historically one of the very successful periods for CIDESCO. In 1998 after a unanimous decision by the General Assembly in Athens, Ursula became CIDESCO Honorary President. She received the highest honor, for her outstanding services and dedication to CIDESCO International and the beauty therapy profession. In 1997 she was elected in the National Organization ANBOS as Board Member for Education in The Netherlands. This was a very demanding job, as in addition to the States Institutes and their programmes, many Private and Vocational Institutes and their training programmes came under the control and supervision of ANBOS Education, led by Ursula. Her passion for CIDESCO continued and over the years she constantly and actively supported CIDESCO, members and Boards who found in Ursula an experienced advisor willing to support and assist whenever required with sincerity and integrity- always for the best interest of CIDESCO! Ursula continues today with remarkable desire and enthusiasm to serve CIDESCO as Chairperson of the CIDESCO Education Committee. Being also a CIDESCO Examiner, she is no doubt a genuine CIDESCO Ambassador when travelling for examinations. In June 2010, Ursula van Deelen was honored with the prestigious Honorary Membership of the National Association ANBOS in the Netherlands, in recognition and appreciation of her invaluable contribution and success in Beauty Therapy and Education fields, in The Netherlands. Ursula, having seen the tremendous progress in Beauty Therapy she is very proud and still a great supporter of the profession and... most certainly of CIDESCO! We sincerely thank her on behalf of CIDESCO for her continuous and invaluable support and wish her all the very best in life!n

CIDESCO IntErnatIOnal link EDUCATION 7 Innovated Ideas Students impress with their exam projects By Thea de Ruijter During my last Spa examination I was pleasantly surprised to see some innovated teaching projects initiated by The International Academy of Health and Skin Care in Cape Town. Not only did the students have to write their own water therapy thesis, which was not an easy task, but they had been encouraged by their instructors to design a Spa to their likings along the lines of how they would like to manage it one day in the future. The students were most successful in creating their own business plans including detailed designs of their dream Spas. One of the many project works If you think a business plan is easy to set up, just have a look at some of the requirements which the students were expected to meet even though these were not marked by CIDESCO: Written Thesis In a professional business proposal format, minimum of 1000 words including the following: Indicate The location of your business Parking possibilities for your clients The name of your business Whether your Spa is open to both men, women and children Your business strategy or goals Details of the products you will be using and their suppliers The number of staff you intend to employ A description of the uniform your staff will be wearing The funds required to start the business, the cost of your machines, linen, towels, products, plinths, trolleys, general equipment, cleaning equipment, tea, coffee, milk for the tea room, décor, salaries, insurance for your business security, monthly costs for electricity and water etc. How you intend to finance the initial costs Model Design and build a scale model of your Spa Carefully select the layout of your business, the colour, décor, reception, treatment rooms etc. Another phantastic work... got here an architect lost? Promotional Prepare a brochure describing the treatments you intend to offer and the duration of each individual treatment Include the cost of each type of treatment Design your own business cards Design a company logo When I arrived at the school and saw the results of these projects for the first time, I could hardly believe my eyes. I was truly impressed. What a pleasure it was for me to see how motivated and excited the students were. I asked some of them what they thought of the project and was told that they had found it a very interesting and challenging experience and that the cooperation with the instructors had been most enjoyable and more like fun than work. n

8 CIDESCO IntErnatIOnal link HEALTH the Magic Wand of the Beauty therapists By Dr. Rochy Leibowitz Everyone knows what a magic wand is something a magician or a fairy godmother waves around with seemingly no effort - and how it produces amazing, spectacular and positive results! Almost all beauty therapists have at least one magic wand. To name a few, it might be a high-frequency applicator (complete with buzzing purple or orange sparkling lights), a galvanic roller slipped effortlessly across a serum-oiled brow, a flashing laser beam to remove or stimulate hair growth or a noisy vibrating gyrator to easily melt away unwanted fat. Dr. Rochy Leibowitz What ever it may be, there is no doubt CIDESCO International Examiner that the great majority of today s therapists own and use, the ultimate tool an electric magic wand. As we grow older and wiser we tend to replace our childhood belief in magic with a hesitant understanding of the reality that lies behind it. We reluctantly admit to ourselves that it is simply impossible for the magical Santa Claus to visit every child in the world on the same day every single year and to deliver appropriate gifts however wonderful the concept is, and however much we would love it to be true. So we look for the reality in the magic recognising that in many countries children do get gifts on Christmas Eve although they are not delivered in quite the way that folklore would have us believe. So that is how it is with the electric magic wands of beauty therapy. They may have many a wonderful effect but often they are not delivered in quite the way of the common myth. Magic is not enough. If we wish to have a degree of credibility we need to go beyond the belief that equipment will do magic simply because the wizard who sold it, said it would. We need to understand the basic fundamentals of what the equipment is scientifically capable of doing and more importantly the resulting responses of the human body facts, not folklore! Understanding the capabilities of the electrical equipment is not as daunting a task as it seems. The number of effects that electrical equipment is capable of is limited as are the responses of the human body. It is not my intention to provide detailed information of physics, but I encourage you to go back to basics and do a short review of electricity. You will discover that there are many forms of energy in our therapeutic machinery including electrical, chemical, mecha - nical, kinetic, heat, light, and sound energies, to name but a few. For the sake of simplicity, one should note that most of our machines use or create one of the following three forms of energy: Chemical energy affecting the negative and positive ions in the body cells and the negative and positive ions in the ionised water soluble products. Mechanical energy involved in producing physical changes in the tissue causing movement and also involving vibration and pressure. Heat energy generated and applied via radiation (example in an infra-red lamp or other light source) or by using electrical energy in the form of high frequency currents to generate heat (example in electrolysis or high frequency applications). We all know what the general effects of heat are at low intensity it is felt as gentle, warming and soothing, but it is a destructive, searing, burning and painful modality at high temperatures. Similarly, different intensities of chemical and mechanical energy can have effects that may be healing and stimulating on one end of the spectrum but unpleasant and destructive at the other end. The same can be said of light and sound. Each energy form needs to be understood, and its potential for both positive and negative effects needs to be recognised and respected, before it is used as a therapeutic tool. It is equally important to review the basics of physiology when assessing the effectiveness of electrical equipment. Although it is beyond the scope of this article to go into anatomic details, it is essential to recognise that different tissues respond to electrical currents in different, limited and specific ways. For example, nerves can be stimulated by electrical currents to conduct the current and be activated by it. Muscles can be stimulated to contract to facilitate movement. Gland tissues can be stimulated to secrete. Blood vessels can be dilated or constricted. CIDESCO International Link 63, October 2010

9 Thus, the effect of each type of electrical machine is limited by the specific manner in which each body tissue can respond to it. If you recognise what each tissue type is capable of when electrically stimulated, you will know what physiological effect is possible for each piece of electric equipment. Regardless of how much the machine costs, or the intensity or type of current nerves cannot contract, gland tissues cannot conduct and muscles cannot secrete... Magic Wand or not! The table that follows (adapted from my book Lecture Notes for Beauty Therapists: Electrical Therapy puts it all together, and looks at the possible physiological responses of the body tissues to the various energy effects. From here it is a logical step to seeing the possible effects of each piece of equipment by examining whether the equipment produces predominantly mechanical, chemical or heat effects (or a combination of all three). For example, a brush cleanser, which mainly has a mechanical effect, could not be expected to enhance absorption of a water soluble product (no matter what the manufacturer s manual may indicate!). n Structure or function Heat effect Mechanical effect Chemical effect The epidermal cells Increases oxygen demand Increases wastes Can destroy enzymes Superficial burns Desquamation Cell metabolism Increases metabolic rate Unknown Unknown Changes in permeability of cell membrane Nerves Blood vessels May perceive as pain May reduce pain Dilates Increases blood flow Causes erythema Sensory receptors stimulated?stimulating?sedating Stimulates sympathetic nerve system Increased blood flow Vasodilation. Try it you may even be surprised to find that knowledge carries more power than magic! The above table of information is copyright by Dr Leibowitz.

12 CIDESCO IntErnatIOnal link SPOTLIGHT a Worldwide Career Pamela Adkins Road to Success By CIDESCO Staff Editor Pamela Adkins was born in a small village in Norfolkshire, England. She attended college for beauty-therapy, wig-making and ladies hairdressing for three years and graduated in Due to the rural area in which Pamela lived the only job available was in Cambridge. Wages were low in this first job so she could not afford to live there and continued living at home. It took her two hours to get to work, be it by scooter, bicycle or train. The salon she worked specialised in electrolysis and waxing. As travel had always been one of Pamela s goals, she decided to apply for a job on a luxury cruise ship after she had had the required three years of working experience. She was successful, and in the course of five years she progressed from beauty therapist to salon and Spa manager. In all, she worked on eight ships and travelled to sixty-five countries. It was not all sightseeing. The salon was constantly busy, and Pamela often did twelve massages or sixteen manicures a day. She experienced one ship running aground, another having a major fire and another being caught in a severe hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean, which resulted in the nine day Atlantic crossing to take fifteen days. After feeling that she has had enough excitement, Pamela decided to settle down in one place for a while. A job opportunity brought Pamela to Japan in 1991, where she found her true passion in teaching. A beauty therapy school had been established in Tokyo as a franchise of a British college. In Japan there is no nationally recognised qualification for beauty therapists. Many salons employ staff with no training at all and then do the training themselves. This resulted in initial difficulties in getting students. Pamela soon realised that international qualifications appeal to the Japanese so after taking over the college, she looked into the possibility of it becoming a CIDESCO international school. At that time there were no CIDESCO international schools in Japan, but post graduate examinations had been held there for many years and a CIDESCO National Section established, so the name CIDESCO was already known. It was first in the year 2000 that the first schools were opened in Japan. The recognition of the standard of the CIDESCO training helped to get more students and soon the number of schools applying to gain CIDESCO accreditation increased. Pamela had always worked closely with the CIDESCO Section Nippon and acted as a bridge between Japan and CIDESCO International. She still enjoys to travel and working as a CIDESCO international examiner allows her to experience a variation of techniques and ideas. As chairwoman of CIDESCO Nippon, Pamela has over 2000 members and is in charge of fifteen schools. She teaches at her two colleges, Takara International Esthetic College, Tokyo and Osaka. Living in a foreign country is not without its challenges, the language being a major obstacle in Japan. Pamela teaches via an interpreter, itself a challenge if the interpreter is unsure of the technical terminology. Over the years Pamela has collected many amusing stories of mistranslations. If you ever think about living in another country, you must realise the importance of being flexible and open to change as well as ready to accept and embrace the new culture. But, living abroad can widen your horizon and allow you to learn new therapies. In Japan, the customer is king, and the level of service is exceptional, something many of us can learn from. As a teacher, it is essential to be passionate about your subject, so that you can inspire others. Pamela makes an effort to ensure this by studying and learning new treatments. After twenty-seven years as a therapist and teacher she hopes to continue to promote and improve standards in the worldwide training of therapists. n CIDESCO International Link 63, October 2010

CIDESCO IntErnatIOnal link SCHOOLS 13 The Birth of Germany s Make-up competition By CIDESCO Staff Editor In 1997 Ronelle Iten and Margrit Altenburg approached the CIDESCO National Section Germany to ask if they would be willing to host the CIDESCO Congress as unforeseen circumstances had prevented the original country responsible for doing so. They were. As a novelty, the Section Germany decided to introduce a Makeup competition open to all CIDESCO schools. It became the birth of the first ever CIDESCO make-up competition in Germany. The theme was Bridal Make-up from the Sixties. This competition became such a success that the Section Germany decided to continue to organise such a Make-up competition at the annual National Beauty Congress. This year s COSMETICA was held in Stuttgart, Germany. The theme was Fairytale Magic. The competition and its reputation has grown since its beginnings, now attracting participants not only from Germany but as well from Austria and Switzerland, making the competition one of the highlights of Germanys National Beauty Congresses. The tradition remains alive and shows no sign of stopping. With some of the most talented young people participating we expect to see this successful event continue for years to come. n
