Starina Coord. 49 2'43" N, 22 14'56" E Alt m closest village: Stakčín Surroundings of reservoir feeding for several cities in eastern Slovakia. In the 1970 s, five villages were relocated prior to build it. Collecting sites are situated in former pastures with scattered birch trees, now meadows and primary woodland.
Ruské Coord. 49 6'48" N, 22 20'33" E Alt closest village: Stakčín Surroundings of the former village Ruské, relocated because of building of Stariná water reservoir in There is a small grassland nature reserve Lúky pri Ruskom. The area has developed into forests dominated by Carpinus and Fagus. A feature are the mature trees remnants from isolated trees in pastures and also pioneer trees like Betula and Populus tremula.
Tri kopce Coord. 49 1'43" N, 22 10'16" E Alt m closest village: Snina The large meadow with a long history of mowing and grazing. Now, it is annually mowed once. Several interesting species of Entoloma and Hygrocybe were recorded recently from this site.
Vinné Coord '58" N, 21 56'45" E Alt. 140 m closest village: Trnava pri Laborci The grasslands between two villages Trnava pri Laborci and Vinné, on the foothill of Viniansky hrad castle hill. Pastures and meadows formerly used as pastures on relatively plain terrain, but a range of humidity levels exist across the site from wet to very dry soils. The slopes towards the Viniansky hrad castle are part of the protected nature reserve with steppe habitats.
Jovsianska hrabina Coord N, E Alt m closest village: Jovsa Jovsianska hrabina National Nature Reserve (257 ha area) was established in 1953 to protect natural forest habitats with occurrence of endangered plant species, especially Leucojum vernum subsp. carpaticum. Typical habitat is Carpathian oak-hornbeam woods, dominated by Carpinus betulus, Quercus petraea and Q. robur. The east margin of the natural reserve is bordered by Myslina stream with oakelm-ash floodplain forests with Alnus glutinosa, Fraxinus excelsior, F. angustifolia and Quercus robur.
Jovsa Coord '52" N, 22 6'14" E Alt. 138 m closest village: Jovsa Grasslands near the Jovsa village. Remnants of traditional pastures on poor soil placed among fields used for agricultural crops. Now used for hay production.

Recent decrease of agriculture in the area has resulted in a reduction of grassland area and diminishing traditional pastures with scattered birch trees.
Morské oko Coord '54" N, 22 12'06" E Alt m closest village: Remetské Hámre Morské oko is the National Nature Reserve with the area ha, including 13,8 ha of the water area. It was established in 1984 to protect natural lake area. The prevailing habitats are beech and fir-beech forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and mixed with Abies alba, Betula pendula, Picea abies and Populus tremula. The lakeside is popular walking ground for weekend trips.
Oblík Coord '24" N, 21 28'22" E Alt m closest village: Pavlovce Oblík National Nature Reserve, deciduous virgin forest dominated by Fagus sylvatica, area 0.89 km 2, almost symmetric, obtuse, conical, isolated volcano hill with rather steep slopes on all sides.

They are built up of the two andesite complexes Sokolie skaly (sokol = falcon) and Havrania skala (havran = raven). In 1980, the Nature Reserve (33 ha) Hermanovské skaly was established to protect relic vegetations and important bird habitats associated with the rocky formations.

Eastern Slovakia - country, nature, people and fungi Practical information: The official language is Slovak. Young people can usually speak English as the second language. Older people can speak Russian. In case of emergency call 112, but if possible, we recommend calling the organisers first because of possible language barrier. The currency is Euro. Most shops owned by big companies accept Visa/Master cards. Smoking in restaurants is prohibited if not indicated the opposite. Alcohol is accessible at any time of a day and possible to drink at any place except when driving and people in an official service. Shops are mostly open from 9:00 to 16:00 on working days, but malls, supermarkets and food stores can be open longer and/or during weekends. An independent Slovak republic was established in Since 2004 it is the member of the EU; since 2009 the member of euro area. With total area of km², Slovakia has 5.43 millions of inhabitants ( Rugged terrain of Slovak country caused high variability in dialects, food and beverages. The most known traditional Slovak food are bryndzové halušky (dumplings with sheep cheese), a favourable non-alcoholic drink is kofola and very popular are as a digestive strong fruit spirits such as slivovica (made of plums) or hruškovica (made of pear), etc. Most of the area when BMS meeting will take place is situated in the region known as Zemplín. Originally, inhabitants spoke a dialect hardly comprehensible to modern Slovak, now they have accent and temperament still easily recognised from inhabitants of the west. The north is inhabited by the minority of Rusins, they speak a language similar to Ukrainian, they use Cyrillic alphabet and their religion is orthodox Christian (typical for Russia rather then for Western or Central Europe.
Inhabitants of Slovakia, because of its position in middle of Europe, encountered many of turbulences in history and numerous wars. Heritages from this period are many castles or ruins all over the country and variety of religions (Roma Cristians, Lutherans, Calvins, Greco Cristian, etc.). Despite the relatively small area, Slovakia is very variable in climate and vegetation types. In the south, it has lowlands with pannonian flora of dry and warm climate. With increasing altitude, the vegetation is changing to oak, beech or spruce dominated forests and the highest mountains of the county (Tatry Mts.) have also alpine belt. The most frequent type of forests are Carpathian beech forests; some of the Slovak natural beech-forest reserves are listed as UNESCO heritage. Slovaks are passionate mushroom-hunters. They collect various species of Boletus, Leccinum, Suillus, Cantharellus, Xerocomus, Morchella, Polyporus, Armillaria, Calocybe and others. The most popular edible fungi are boletes with white flesh called dubáky in Slovak. Out of Russulaceae, frequently collected are Lactarius deliciosus, Lactifluus volemus, Russula virescens and Russula cyanoxantha. In Slovakia, more than 2500 of macrofungi have been reported; among them more than 200 are Russulaceae taxa.
