3 Location Slovakia is situated in the middle of Europe and is bordered by five states. From the west it is Austria and the Czech Republic, from the southern part it is Hungary (this is the longest boundary), in the east it is Ukraine (the shortest boundary) and from the north it is boarded by Poland.

4 Surface Slovakia has mountains in the north and lowlands in the south. The whole surface is divided into Pannonian Basin (Záhorie lowland, Danube lowland and Eastern lowland belong there) and the Carpathians with the highest range of mountains the High Tatras.

7 Climate The territory of Slovakia is situated in a moderate climatic zone. We have 4 seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter). Winters are quite cold with a lot of snow in the mountains and summers are usually hot and dry. A frequent phenomenon is the temperature inversion ( there is a fog in the lower parts and at the top of the mountains the weather is amazing and sunny).

8 Waters The Slovak rivers flow into the Black and Baltic Sea. The biggest river is the Danube. It is the 2nd longest European river and is 2 857km long (172km in Slovakia). It limits Rye Island which is the biggest river island in Europe. There we can find a drop which is the biggest bird in Europe.

9 The longest river is the Váh which is 406km long. On this river there are several natural and artificial lakes. They provide rest and sports activities for people. Sĺňava Liptovská Mara

10 Mountain Lakes They are situated mostly in the mountains and most of them are in the High Tatras. The biggest and deepest one is Great Hincovo Mountain-lake with area of 20,08ha and depth 53m. It has almost a circular shape. The water in this lake is the most crystally clear water of our mountain-lakes. Blue Mountain-lake (called Blue Eye) is situated in the highest place of Slovakia (2 192 m a.s.l.)

11 The only geyser situated in Slovakia and also in Europe is Herlany Geyser. It was drilled 405m deep in l of drinkable mineral water come onto the surface during one eruption. Its temperature is C and is usually high 10-15m.

12 Mineral waters Slovakia is very rich in mineral sources of water. They are used to treat several types of illnesses in the termal spas and people are also healed by drinking water from these mineral streams. In present times there are over 1300 locations with mineral or thermal sources.
