Regular meetings: Regular meetings took place in a monthly basis considering the time span of this report (January to September, 2017). The meetings took place after the presentations of research progress of the members of the chapter (see point D). These meetings served to plan and organize different activities of the chapter and to notify SEG information to our members. B. Lectures: During 2017, no invited lectures have been carried out. However, it is expected to have at least one before the end of the year.
3 C. Field trips: Cerro Negro Field Trip: On May 17, 2017, a group of 9 members of the SEG Student Chapter of University of Chile participated in a field trip to the Cerro Negro copper mine, located 100 km north of Santiago de Chile. Dr. Martin Reich and Dr. Fernando Barra headed the group. Cerro Negro is a stratabound Cu-(Ag) deposit that belongs to the Belt of Lower Cretaceous stratabound Cu-(Ag) deposits of Central Chile. Activities were led by Minera Cerro Negro geologists and engineers, and included: (i) safety talk and introduction to the geology of the Cerro Negro deposit; (ii) visit to the open pit area; (iii) technical visit to the hydrometallurgical plant (leaching and electro-winning stages); and (iv) visit to Cerro Negro drillcore storage facilities, where students could learn about the geology that characterizes this deposit. This field trip was made possible thanks to Compañía Minera Cerro Negro, and by the Steward R. Wallace Fund, which was awarded by our SEG Student Chapter during the Round II Call of Figure 1: Cerro Negro field trip. Left: the group of students (SEG SC members), professors and professionals in the mine area. Right: EW plant El Teniente Field Trip: On June 14, 2017, a group of 14 members of the SEG Student Chapter of University of Chile participated in a field trip to El Teniente copper mine, located 70 km south of Santiago de Chile. The group was headed by Dr. Fernando Barra. El Teniente is one of the major Chilean Porphyry Cu-Mo deposits, and belongs to the Belt of Miocene-Pliocene porphyry copper deposits of the Principal Cordillera of Central Chile. Activities were led by El Teniente geologists (Jack Cubillos) and included: (i) safety talk and introduction to the geology of the El
4 Teniente deposit; (ii) visit to the underground mine area; and (iii) visit to El Teniente drill-core storage facilities. The visit to El Teniente was possible thanks to CODELCO, and Felipe Celhay and his team. This field trip also was made possible by the Steward R. Wallace Fund, which was awarded by our SEG Student Chapter during the Round II Call of Figure 2: El Teniente field trip. Organization of conferences, workshops, short courses: SEG Student Chapter presentations During 2017 our Student Chapter has organized a series of presentations related to current research topics of our members. These expositions have been taking place twice per month in a classroom at the Department of Geology of the University of Chile. The main goal of this activity is to bring together all of our members and to know more about the research that each member is doing at the time (most of it related to economic geology). The seminars were supported and conducted by professors of the Department. Table 1 details the date, topic and expositor of the presentations of 2017.

The main goal of this activity was to train the teachers so they can successfully include these topics in their science classes. There was a special module in this course dedicated to basic economic geology.

Activities with the SEG Student Chapter of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Our Student Chapter had the opportunity to meet the SEG Student Chapter of UFRJ in the context of their visit to Chile, last May. The joint activities included: (i) meeting at Department of Geology of University of Chile, where we shared our research interests; (ii) visit to the analytical laboratories of the Department, and (iii) one day field trip to Cajón del Maipo, just east of Santiago, to learn about the Chilean Andes. In this field trip participated two of our members (Cinthia Johansson and Eduardo Salazar) as guides.

Participation in conferences, workshops, short courses: Goldschmidt 2017: A group of four SEG SC members participated in the Goldschmidt 2017 Conference in Paris. One of our members (J. Rivera) gave a presentation about the use of the Cr isotopic system applied to the study of supergene enrichment in soils.
8 Additionally, three members (A. Herazo, C. Johansson and C. Tassara) showed their economic geology research in the poster sessions. Right: Cinthia Johansson (SEG SC member) with her research poster. F. Fund-raising programs. During 2017 no fund-raising activities have been carried out, as there were unexpended resources of the Steward R. Wallace Fund awarded to our SEG Student Chapter during the Round II Call of However, it is expected to run some program in the remaining months of this year. G. Future plans: The plans of the Student Chapter of University of Chile contemplate different aspects detailed below. In the first place, a call will be opened for the purpose of recruiting new members for the Student Chapter, in order to incorporate new undergraduate geology students interested in economic geology, and also to attract students from other disciplines, such as mining engineering. At the same time, we seek to strengthen the identity of the chapter by the creation of a logo and a website. On the other hand, it is planned to organize workshops and courses on various topics related to economic geology. In particular, there are proposals for organizing a workshop in mineral deposit modeling specialized software (Leapfrog). At the same time, there is the possibility of conducting interactive thematic courses designed to analyze different types of mineral deposits, such as organizing a thematic session on the IOCG deposits of Chile. In a complementary way, lectures
9 will be coordinated that will be dictated by academics and professionals, where current topics on economic geology and mining will be covered. It is planned to continue with the Student Chapter s monthly meetings, with the purpose of organizing the tasks to be carried out throughout the year, and for updating to all the members of the chapter on the topics that are going to be addressed in the following months. In the Student Chapter of the University of Chile there is a lot of motivation to keep organizing and participating in field trips, possibly of short duration. The sites to be visited would be mineral deposits near Santiago that are representative of the region, and the most relevant metallogenic belts of the country. Finally, there are plans to keep doing extension activities with the objective of bringing economic geology knowledge to society, particularly secondary schools. The objective is to inform a sector of society about the activities carried out by the Student Chapter of the University of Chile, as well as the importance of mining and economic geology for the country.
