1 PROGRAM SYLLABUS Global Opportunities at UANDES GO Chilean Economy 2018 Short-term program at Universidad de los Andes July 9 th July 27 th, 2018 / Santiago, Chile Course Description: The GO UANDES July Program offers an overview of contemporary Chile with focus on its Leadership, and its cultural, historical, political and economic background and current trends. The course combines lectures with UANDES Faculty and guest lecturers, as well as visits and field trips to relevant historical and cultural institutions. The course contains three Units: Immersion in Chilean Culture; Chilean Economy; and Discovering Spanish. The program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students coming from abroad with different academic backgrounds. It is fully delivered in English. This 3-week course comprises 60 contact hours in total. Learning objectives: By the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand key aspects of Chilean economy, institutions and society. 2. Understand cultural differences when approaching business and social issues. 3. Work in multicultural teams and handle cultural diversity. 4. Develop leadership skills, communication, and other important managerial skills. 5. Develop critical and analytical thinking abilities in the context of real and challenging social and economic issues.

2 About Chile and Santiago: Students will learn about Chile s vibrant capital city, Santiago, cultural aspects and traditions of its inhabitants and will receive tools to interact and integrate with Chileans. Chilean poet Pablo Neruda described his beloved country as a large petal of sea, wine, and snow" (Cuando de Chile, 1943). Chile is a long and narrow country nestled between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, and is home to 17 million citizens. Chile stretches from the Atacama Desert, the driest in the world, to the glaciers of Patagonia. Santiago is a thriving and interesting city. With a population of six million, it offers a variety of attractions and activities. Students will find a modern city reflected in state-of-the-art buildings, subway, and museums. Santiago also offers the possibility to be part of a community that enjoys celebrating its national traditions along with other outdoor activities. Santiago is located an hour away from Valparaíso, a coastal city that UNESCO identified as a World Heritage Site, and an hour away from several internationally known ski centers. The capital is a starting point for travelling in South America, and students can reach Buenos Aires in two hours, and Lima in three hours, with numerous flights departing daily. Faculty: All lectures will be delivered in English by UANDES professors with international background. The final course agenda and a final list of professors, bios and contact information will be sent to the students before the program starts. Assessments: The program will have three evaluations: - Class Participation (15%): In order to approve, participants must attend at least 80% of the lectures and activities. - Language test (15%): This Spanish as a foreign language unit evaluation covers all the contents seen during the correspondent weeks - Paper and Final exam (70%): The students will choose a specific subject of personal interest seen in Chile, so during the program they will explore the elected topic with contents of the lectures and activities in order to develop the elected topic. Paper 1 (20%): This paper should be sent the second week of the program on a date to be confirmed Final Presentation (50%): Students will present to the rest of the class the paper they previously submitted. 3 Draft Outline: The course is comprised of three units of study. The lectures and field trips are the following: Unit 1: Immersion in Chilean Culture The lectures and visits of this unit will motivate the student to ask questions and to identify the new experiences he/she will face in the following weeks. The unit will familiarize the student with primary cultural aspects of Chile related with our Economy. Students will learn and experience, through dynamic lectures and visits, about the typical Chilean cultural expressions how this is immersed in the Latin American culture. 5 Unit 3: Discovering Spanish This course is intended to provide basic lexical and communication tools that allow students to approach the use of Spanish during their stay in Chile. The classes are designed to learn basic communication tools of social interaction. The aim is to learn aspects of Chilean and Latin American culture, customs and environment in order to understand social behaviors and use of language and enrich their stay in the country. Objectives: 1. Be able to understand and use expressions related to social exchange. 2. Be able to communicate in basic urban interaction situations. 3. Become familiar with the formal and informal cultural behaviors. Specific Objectives: 1. Greet someone, ask how you are and react to what he/she says. 2. Ask for and accept apologies. 3. Asking the price or ordering in a restaurant. 4. Say what you like and what you dislike. 5. Invite someone and to respond to an invitation. 6. Ask and answer about work and hobbies. 7. Talk to someone about what to do or where to go and decide on the place and time of the appointment. 8. Describe your family, yourself and others. 9. Describe the place where you live. 10. Understand phrases, expressions and words if they relate to issues of immediate relevance; for example, basic information about a person. 11. Understanding words, phrases and expressions in simple transactions, such as in stores. Methodology: Deduction and assimilation activities.
