Main St. The Cathedral Parish of St. Raphael is the merger of three historic parishes located within a few blocks of the Capitol Square. HOLY REDEEMER Buildings at Holy Redeemer and St. Patrick provide the current facilities for the parish. Mass is offered every day in both churches. The parish rectory is at the Holy Redeemer site, while the offices are at the St. Patrick location. Old St. Raphael Cathedral was destroyed by arson in Bishop Morlino has announced his intention to erect a new cathedral on the same site. Holmes letter on the facing page for more information. Condolences Condolences to the family of Bernadine Post who died last week and was buried by Msgr. Holmes last Friday. Please remember Bernadine and her family in your prayers. One Faith, One Parish, My Share We are currently in the second year of an effort to increase our regular parish offertory income. Below are the figures for last month, compared to those of the prior June. June 2017 $34, $39, Change - $5, Percentage change % The first year of our campaign was very successful. Unfortunately, that success has not continued into the current year. The parish Finance Council is working to develop a new approach to the parish for this fall. One critical need is getting more people who come here regularly for Mass to take the step of being registered and supporting members of the parish. Parish Conference of SVdP Meal Prep & Serve Volunteers are welcome to join us at we prepare and serve a meal for the men s shelter at Grace Episcopal Church. Meal prep will take place at St. Patrick s kitchen from 5-7 pm next Sunday, July 23rd. The meal will be served Tuesday, July 25th, at Grace Episcopal s men shelter, with volunteers needing to be there at 7:00 pm. 3 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 16, 2017 Page 3 Dear Friends in Christ: The Risen Lord gave his Apostles a great commission: Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry out all I have commanded you, and know that I am with you always even to the end of the age. (Mt. 28:16-20) In Latin, missio means I send. This is where we get the word missions the lands into which the Church is newly sent. We are understandably occupied with our own daily concerns and the needs of our own local diocese and parish and that s not just a matter of maintenance! More and more people in our own city and neighborhood have never received an invitation to faith the re-evangelization of our own homeland is clearly a necessity. Nevertheless, each of us is also called to participate in the commission that Christ gave His Church to form disciples in every land and nation. Each year, we receive a reminder of the part we are called to play in this great work when we receive a visit from a priest whose community is working in the mission fields. These visits are arranged through our diocese. Different religious communities apply to come to the diocese. Each community that is accepted is assigned to a mix of larger and smaller parishes. Once the assignments have been made, the community negotiates with the pastor to set a date for the visit. This year, our Mission Appeal has been assigned to the Franciscan Friars of the Province of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. (That s quite a mouthful!) This community was founded in Pulaski, Wisconsin (northwest of Green Bay) in 1887 by Brother Augustin Zeytz, O.F.M., a Polish Franciscan who emigrated here. The initial work of the community was to serve the spiritual needs of Polish immigrants in rural Wisconsin and in cities throughout the Midwest. In the early 1950s, friars of the province went to Mississippi (to start a school for African American students) and to the Philippines (where they were successful in developing a new province of the Franciscan Order). It will be Father Jason Welle, O.F.M., who will be visiting us next weekend for the Mission Appeal. He will celebrate all the English Masses, and will also preach at the two evening Masses in Spanish. Fr. Welle will speak to us about missionary work being done at home and abroad by his community. I know that you will make Father Jason very welcome, and be generous in supporting the Franciscan missions with your prayers and financial contributions. The weekend of the Mission Appeal is the customary time for the pastor to take a little summer vacation. Adhering to that venerable custom, I will be away for most of the next two weeks with diocesan priests helping with the daily Masses and confessions. The only schedule change will be that Eucharistic Adoration will continue in the chapel all day Wednesday, and Benediction will not be celebrated. Michael Clerkin & Kathleen Huff FAITH FORMATION Catholicism 101 We offer a monthly 3-session overview of the Catholic Faith for adults at St. Patrick Church that occurs every other month. The series is intended especially for (1) those seeking a basic introduction to Christianity and/ or the Catholic Church, (2) parents with a child to be baptized, and (3) couples preparing to be married in the Church. Session I will next be offered Tuesday, September 12th, with sessions II and III on the following two Tuesday evenings. Sessions begin at 6:30 pm. CATHEDRAL 20S&30S Theology on Tap This Thursday, July 27 Plan to join us Thursday, July 27th, 7:00 pm at the Brink Lounge when seminarian Jose Luis Flores-Ugalde will speak on The Power of Gratitude at Home and Abroad. Is the grass always greener on the other side? Is it possible to be satisfied with what we have? Jose will share how his recent trip to Mexico helped him to learn about the immense effect gratitude has had on his life in the U.S. and how he believes gratitude helps resolve the many questions concerning happiness and material goods. Jose Luis Flores-Ugalde is currently in his fourth college year of seminary. Jose is an alumnus of St. Ambrose Academy and grew up as a member of Cathedral Parish. He is currently on seminarian assignment at our Parish for the summer. Theology on Tap is a monthly speaker series where 20s & 30s are invited to join us for engaging talks by some of the leading thinkers, speakers, educators, innovators, and activists in the nation as they share their insights on various contemporary issues facing young adults today. Young Adult Brunch We have a brunch for young adults (in their 20s and 30s) after the 11:00 am Mass at St. Patrick on the first Sunday of each month. 5 15 domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 16 de julio de 2017 Page 5 PARA REFLEXIONAR Jesús Perdona Siempre Aldo Moro era amigo de Pablo VI. Cuando las Brigadas Rojas secuestraron a Aldo, Pablo VI se ofreció como rehén para que liberasen a su amigo; pero Aldo fue asesinado. Las cuatro hijas de Aldo fueron a la cárcel en las Navidades siguientes, a llevar unos regalos y perdonar a los asesinos de su padre. Ante la pregunta de los periodistas qué es lo que hacían con este gesto una de ellas respondió: lo hemos aprendido de Jesús. Jesús dio la vida por todos, inclusive por sus enemigos. En él tenían cabida todos los seres humanos, en especial los más despreciados. El no vino a llamar a los justos, sino a los pecadores y no pedía sacrificios, sino misericordia (Mt 9,13). Jesús practicaba y enseñaba a otros a practicar la lección más difícil: pasar haciendo el bien y perdonar y a Pedro le manda que perdone siempre (Mt 18,21). La reconciliación perfecta la hizo Jesús, él es el único mediador entre Dios y los seres humanos (1Tm 2,5). Él murió por todos, para que ya no vivan para sí los que viven, sino para aquel que murió y resucitó por ellos, a quien no conoció pecado, le hizo pecado por nosotros (2Co 5,14-21). Cristo nos ha reconciliado con Dios por medio de la cruz, destruyendo en sí mismo la enemistad; por él tenemos acceso al Padre en un mismo espíritu (Ef 2,14-18). Jesús excusa y perdona a sus enemigos y así se lo pide al Padre: Padre, perdónalos, porque no saben lo que hacen (Lc 23,34). Hasta ese punto llegó el perdón de Jesús. Jesús no se dejó vencer por el mal, sino que venció al mal con el bien (Rm 12,21). Dice san Juan Crisóstomo: En las guerras se considera vencido al que cae. Pero entre nosotros la victoria consiste en eso mismo. Nunca vencemos cuando nos portamos mal, sino cuando soportamos el mal con paciencia. La victoria más bella consiste en vencer con nuestra paciencia a los que nos hacen daño. Jesús no fue enviado por su Padre como juez, sino como salvador (Jn 3,17); él nos revela que Dios es un Padre que tiene su gozo en perdonar (Lc 15) y cuya voluntad es que nada se pierda (Mt 18,12). Jesús no sólo anuncia este perdón, sino que además lo ejerce y testimonia con sus obras que dispone de este poder reservado a Dios (Mc 2, 5-11). Jesús nos manda amar a los enemigos, hacer el bien a los que nos odian, bendecir a los que nos maldicen (Lc 6, 27-35). Al perdonar ponemos la medida del perdón, pues con la medida que midamos se nos medirá (Lc 6,36-38). Jesús tenía entrañas de misericordia y sus seguidores, al mismo tiempo que se sienten atraídos por él, tienen que comprender que la misericordia es la única realidad que puede resumir e iluminar decisivamente todos los demás aspectos del mensaje cristiano. Cuando Jesús se relaciona con el ser humano, especialmente con los necesitados y pecadores siente profundamente la misericordia. Los evangelios nos hablan de distintos momentos en que se le conmovieron las entrañas. Como ante el féretro del joven muerto en Naím o ante los ciegos de Jericó. Octavio Gutierrez & Anayeli Salazar Jesús sentía compasión cuando veía a las multitudes vejadas y abatidas, como ovejas sin pastor (Mt 9,36); cuando veía a los ciegos, a los paralíticos y a los sordomudos que de todas partes acudían a él, (Mt 14,14); cuando se daba cuenta de que las personas que le habían seguido durante días estaban fatigadas y hambrientas (Mc 8,2). Hay parábolas en las que habla del perdón. Un fariseo invitó a Jesús a comer con él. Jesús entró en su casa y se sentó a la mesa. Una mujer, que era pecadora en la ciudad, cuando supo que estaba a la mesa en casa del fariseo, llevó un vaso de alabastro lleno de perfume y comenzó a bañarlos con lágrimas y a limpiarlos con sus cabellos; le cubrió de besos los pies y se los ungió con el perfume Como esta mujer amó mucho, se le perdonaron todos sus pecados (Lc 7,36-47). La parábola del deudor inexorable inculca con fuerza esta verdad (Mt 18,23-35), en la que insiste Cristo (Mt 6,4) y que nos impide olvidar haciéndonosla repetir cada día en el padrenuestro. Jesús presenta la misericordia fraterna como una buena disposición previa al perdón de Dios. Es necesario perdonar para que también vuestro Padre celestial los perdone vuestras culpas (Mc 11,25). El perdón fraterno aparece aquí como condición esencial previa para obtener el perdón de Dios. Lucas va mucho más lejos, parece dar por supuesto que cuando pedimos perdón al Señor hemos perdonado previamente a todos. Así decimos al Padre que perdone nuestros pecados porque también nosotros perdonamos a todo el que nos ofende (Lc 11,4). Realmente somos nosotros los que al perdonar ponemos la medida del perdón, pues con la misma medida que midamos, se nos medirá (Lc 6,36-38). Y hay que usar una buena medida para excusar los pecados de cada día, esos que van carcomiendo toda clase de amor. Éste muere, a menudo, por las continuas desatenciones, olvidos, genio, egoísmo. San Pablo presenta el perdón como una consecuencia del perdón divino e invita a perdonar, (Col 3,13), a ser benignos y misericordiosos (Ef 4,32) y a que la puesta del sol no sorprenda en el enojo (Ef 4,26). Pedro pone como norma de conducta el no devolver mal por mal ni insulto por insulto; antes, al contrario, manda bendecir y amar siempre (1P 3,8-9). 7 15 domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 16 de julio de 2017 Page 7 EDUCACIÓN RELIGIOSA Inscripciones Se acercan las inscripciones para Educación Religiosa. Comienzan el lunes 14 de agosto y terminan el viernes 18 del mismo. Se ofrecen clases para los grados 1 a 7, y también para Confirmación, la cual puede empezar en 8vo grado. Los formatos de inscripción estarán disponibles en el kiosco a partir del 30 de julio. Pueden llevar los formatos de inscripción con los documentos y pago correspondiente a la oficina parroquial de 8:30 am a 12m y de 1:00 a 2:30 pm. En el momento de la inscripción, se le pide que entregue copia del acta de nacimiento y cualquier certificado que pueda tener si recibió otro sacramento. El depósito, no-reembolsable del 50% por niño, se paga al momento de la inscripción. Es importante que escriba en la hoja de inscripción el número de miembro (el número de sobres), porque los cupos son solo para miembros de la parroquia. Procuren inscribir a sus hijos lo más pronto posible, ya que hay un límite de 15 alumnos por grado. Es muy importante que sepan al grado escolar que su hijo(a) va en el otoño, si inscriben a su hijo en el grado equivocado el niño puede perder el cupo. Catequistas Desea compartir su fe con otros y aumentarla a la vez? Ofrezca su tiempo como catequista a jóvenes de nuestra parroquia. Las clases son de 9:00 a 10:30 am los domingos, dejando tiempo suficiente para llegar a la misa de las 11:00 am. Las clases, que se dan en inglés, comienzan el domingo, 17 de septiembre. La Casa del Señor La iglesia es la Casa de Dios, y Dios vive en ella, debemos respetarla todo el tiempo. El estar en comunicación con Dios debe ser nuestro único objetivo, por ende necesitamos estar en silencio y dejar que nuestra alma y mente estén más cercanas al Rey. Debemos vestir decente y arregladamente. Aunque haga mucho calor afuera, no debemos acudir en shorts, bermudas, blusas o faldas cortas o transparentes, sandalias playeras, camisetas sin mangas, etc. Si tenemos niños, debemos enseñarles a amar y respetar la Casa del Señor y al Señor mismo con el ejemplo. Si los niños lloran, están inquietos o hablan mucho, tratemos de calmarlos, o llevémoslos al comedor del sótano donde la misa es transmitida en pantalla de televisión. Recordemos: Dios es el Señor de señores y el Rey de reyes, y Su casa es sagrada.
