7 The Boston Freedom Trail tour Follow the Red Bricks Road! The Freedom Trail is a 2.5 mile red brick or red painted line that travels through Old Boston geographically and historically. A natural and easily-accomplished idea, the 16 historic sites between Boston Common and The Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown were connected by a red line, and The Freedom Trail was born. It is famous for its unsurpassed contributions to the American Revolution and Civil War. Today, its quaint narrow streets and historic 17th and 18th century buildings mirror Marblehead as it has existed since its founding in You will visit the Town Hall and walk down the hill, ending at the landing area. Upon arrival, you will visit the House of Seven Gables, built by a Salem sea captain and merchant named John Turner in 1668 and occupied by three generations of the Turner family before being sold to Captain Samuel Ingersoll in Today, The House of the Seven Gables campus constitutes its own national historic district on The National Register of Historic Places. In the last century, the House of the Seven Gables has continued to focus on the founder s mission of education, preservation and community service. Upon arrival in Gloucester, you will visit the Beauport House. The Sleeper-McCann House, a property of historic New England/ formerly SPNEA, is the work of designer Henry Davis Sleeper and architect Halfdan M Hanson. The house contains amazing collections from the colonial era, and is arranged by colour and light. Construction on the house began in 1907 and lasted 27 years. Sleeper became well known for his unique designs, and subsequently designed homes for several celebrities, including Joan Crawford and Henry Francis du Pont. Charles and Helena McCann bought Beauport, and added their Chinese porcelain objects to the collections. The McCann family later donated Beauport to historic New England as a museum. A town which was established in the colonial era, made a name for itself during America s gilded age, and since has become the yachting capital of the world. Today, the town thrives as a hub for American culture and visitors are faced with an abundance of activities, quaint B&Bs, museums, shops, beaches, and outstanding restaurants. Newport is not to be missed. Located 70 miles south of Boston, you will be whisked to Newport for an opportunity to explore the town and experience the lifestyles of the rich and famous while touring the infamous mansions. You will visit the spectacular Breakers mansion, the summer cottage of Cornelius Vanderbilt, Chairman and President of the New York Central Railroad system. In 1893, Cornelius Vanderbilt II commissioned architect Richard Morris Hunt to design and create a 70-room Italian Renaissance-style palazzo inspired by the 16th century palaces of Genoa and Turin. Next stop will be the Marble House, the summerhouse of Mr and Mrs William K Vanderbilt. Built between 1888 and 1892, the architect Richard Morris Hunt was inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles. The cost of the house was reported in contemporary press accounts to be $11 million, of which $7 million was spent on 500,000 cubic feet of marble. After a morning spent touring these homes, you will have the opportunity to explore Newport Harbor and will subsequently enjoy lunch on your own at one of the town s most charming restaurants.
