Congratulations to all those from Memphis who won THA Stars of the Industry awards at the recent awards banquet in Murfreesboro! The Peabody s Doug Browne was named THA Hotelier of the Year. Browne credited his award to all the great people working for him. Donovan Stephens, of the Crowne Plaza, captured the Outstanding General Manager of the Year, Large Property; and Vicky Allen, of the Residence Inn Downtown, won the Outstanding Manager of the Year, Small Property. The Peabody also took home an award for the best one-time special event among large hotels. Congratulations to all! UofM Career & Internship Expo Is Wed., Sept. 22 The University of Memphis hosts its annual Career and Internship Expo, Wednesday, September 22, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m., in the University Center Ballroom. The event is sponsored by Career Services and the Academic Internship Office and is designed to provide students and alumni with an opportunity to discuss careers, internships, and jobs, as well as network with representatives from business/industry, government, and health/human service organizations. The Career and Internship Expo is an excellent method of building brand awareness and communicating available employment opportunities. The registration fee to participate in this year s event is $350 for up to three representatives. Additional representatives may attend at a rate of $25 per person. 5 Mary Calorio President, MMHLA From the President: Another great Lodging Summit coming up this month, another fantastic luncheon coming in September &, by the way, if you re reading this before August 5: DON T FORGET TO VOTE! There are two months each year when we don t have a regular monthly meeting August and December. We don t have an August program due to the Southern Lodging Summit, and our traditional Christmas program is held in place of our December meeting. The MMHLA joins with Pinkowski & Company to present the Southern Lodging Summit. Our speakers this year are exceptional. Check out the agenda! Go to and reserve your seat now! Our regular monthly meetings are educational, informative, fun and offer you opportunities to visit other hotels, network with your peers, and support your association. If you were not one of the 92 attendees at July s meeting, go to your calendar immediately and mark the third Wednesday of each month (except August and December) from 11:30 a.m. to about 1:00 p.m. And, oh, did I mention we also feed you?? All you really have to do is decide who to bring with you, and call Peggy for reservation confirmation. (She has to know how much food to order!) Do you need a vaccination against VOTER APATHY? (Indifference, lack of concern, lack of interest, lethargy, laziness, boredom, droopiness, ennui). Sometimes when a conversation turns to politics, there is amazement on how some of our politicians get elected and what a mess our system is in. A long time ago, my father told me that voting was a privilege and that if I did not vote, then I should never complain. Besides, he said, Men have died for you to have that privilege. You know the older that I get, the more I appreciate and realize how very smart my parents were! August 5, 2010, is the primary, and if you didn t get a chance to early vote, then August 5 is vaccination day for Voter Apathy. Please, go vote! After all, as Mahatma Gandhi said: You must be the change you wish to see in the world. Hopefully, I will see you at the Summit on August 18 th. Nuff said. Till next month, same time, same place...
