4 Richard Bilbao The Ukrainian Ironbelly atop Gringotts Wizard Bank and the rest of Diagon Alley could prove to be a reason why Universal moves forward with new hotel ideas. Universal Orlando Resort is probably too busy putting the final touches on Harry Potter's Diagon Alley expansion before it can even think about new hotels. When I asked about recent documents showing Universal was laying down groundwork for three new hotels, Universal Spokesman Tom Schroder told me they were "not ready to talk about future plans." Fair enough. However, Universal could find itself with the need for those rooms sooner than expected if Diagon Alley at its Universal Studios theme park becomes as successful as its Hogsmeade counterpart at its Islands of Adventure theme park. That's because one of the best revenue-producing sources for a theme park is not actually within the theme parks - it's those long-term, multiday hotel stays. For your planning purposes, please post the following CFHLA dates in your calendar: HEAT TRADE SHOW Thursday, August 28th 10am-4pm Caribe Royale Resort & Convention Center PATRIOT DAY BREAKFAST Thursday, September 11th 8am-9:30am Orange County Convention Center POWERHOUSE GOLF OUTING & POWER POW WOW LUNCHEON Thursday, September 25th 1pm Shotgun Start Waldorf Astoria Golf Club HALLOWEEN OPEN GOLF OUTING Friday, October 24th 8am Shotgun Start Falcon's Fire Golf Club So if Universal's new Harry Potter area booms and creates more traffic, and potential heads in beds, that is all the more reason for the company to invest and grow its portfolio of hotel offerings. After all, a single-day theme park ticket costs just under $100 pre-taxes, so it's ideal to encourage guests to buy multiday passes that are priced at a better value per day than several single-day passes. This strategy typically guarantees a guest will return for a second visit. And that, in turn, encourages tourists to want to stay near the park, maybe even at an on-property On Wednesday, July 2nd CFHLA President/CEO
5 hotel. If the Hogsmeade opening success is replicated, Diagon Alley will propel Universal's theme park attendance and business through the roof. So it's not likely a matter of if Universal will ever build these three new hotels, but really just when the company deems it the right time to do so. celebrated his birthday. Orlando No. 1 on Hotwire's 'Most Affordable Destinations' list for summer Orlando Business Journal Cindy Barth Discount travel site Hotwire says Orlando is the top pick among its 10 most popular booking destinations when it comes to affordable hotel prices for mid- to late-summer travel. CFHLA President/CEO Richard Maladecki The average nightly hotel rate is $56 for Orlando bookings during that time, according to Hotwire. The Top 10: Orlando, $56 Reno-Tahoe, $69 Salt Lake City, Utah, $70 Czech Republic, $72 Atlanta, $75 Dallas-Fort Worth, $78 Fort. Lauderdale, $78 Minneapolis, $80 Las Vegas, $91 St. Louis, $92 The 10 destinations and average prices for mid- to late-summer are based on hotel bookings made on Hotwire.com from May 1-June 11 for travel between Aug. 1-Sept. 30. CFHLA wishes all of its members A SAFE & HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!
