A Report on an Archaeological Evaluation (2000/66) Meredith, J Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 42pp, figs, tabs An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of a 1780m of linear trench, was undertaken in response to a planning application. The evaluation indicated that the majority of the site had been used for agricultural use with some evidence for mineral extraction. Major ditches encountered could be matched to field boundaries indicated on the tithe map of A trackway of presumed medieval date acted as either a 'ride' through the woods that occupied the north and east of the site or access to the common or both. A cluster of small features towards the west of the site near Red Hill Road produced Bronze Age and Iron Age pottery and pointed to a later prehistoric presence in this area. A Report on the Archaeological Evaluation, December 2000 (SCCAS Report No.2001/1) Caruth, J Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2001, 38pp, figs, tabs, refs Evaluation trenching prior to a proposed wood planting scheme uncovered occasional scattered features dating from the Early Anglo-Saxon to the post-medieval periods. The most significant of these features was a large pit on the north edge of the eastern field which contained domestic rubbish dated to c.6th century that could possibly be interpreted as an Early Anglo-Saxon sunken featured building. Evidence for the earlier landscape was also found. Record of an Archaeological Evaluation (Report No. 2000/70) Boulter, S Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 129pp, figs, tabs, refs An archaeological evaluation was carried out on the site, which had a rich historical background. Archaeological deposits were recorded at various depths throughout site, mostly in good condition, despite some post-medieval truncation. Possible prehistoric worked and burnt flint, Roman pottery and tile as well as Early Saxon hand-made pottery were recovered from the site. Early Saxon pottery 1

2 probably related to the earliest pre-urban phase in the continuous occupation that developed into the town of Ipswich. Middle Saxon, Late Saxon and early medieval features were also widespread throughout the site. The remains of three substantial buildings were identified. Structural features positively attributed to the Priory ( ) were limited to a mortar bedding surface for a tile floor and a length of footing trench. There were a large number of burials, some with a bonded stone (principally septaria) and lime mortar grave linings. Five walls and robbed wall-lines were thought to relate directly to Wolsey's College. Post-medieval features included cellars and walls associated with the more recent commercial/industrial use of the site. A grave was also recorded in an area that had been the location of the Quaker burial ground. While post-medieval disturbance was evident across most of the site, there was no evidence of earlier remains. A Report on an Archaeological Evaluation (SCCAS Report No. 2000/90) Meredith, J Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 60pp, figs, tabs, refs An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of c3400m of linear trenches, has shown a complex system of ditches and field boundaries. Some of these field systems belonged to the postmedieval period and could be matched to the first edition OS map of 1886 which showed 'Walk Barn', identified in excavation. Many others were on different alignments and/or had paler, leached fills. Finds from isolated contexts indicated that there had been activity here during the Early Bronze Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods. Further excavation had been proposed in three areas to examine the features in the vicinity of datable artefacts found in sealed contexts and to look at the nature and orientation of land boundaries in greater detail. Archaeological Evaluation Letch, A Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 24pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on former industrial land to assess the archaeological potential of the site through trial trenching. The evaluation followed a desk-based assessment which concluded that there was potential for a diverse range of archaeological activity on the development site. Because of the high levels of industrial contamination on parts of the site, only three areas were available for trial trenching. Excavations close to the River uncovered deep alluvial deposits, while 2

3 those on the higher ground showed, amongst other features, a drainage system thought to be of recent origin. A concentration of archaeological activity datable to the 7th century middle Saxon period was recorded to the south-west of the site. This comprised large intercutting pits or ditches and a sequence of post holes. An Archaeological Evaluation (788) McDonald, T & Seddon, G Hertford : Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust, 2000, 31pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust Earlier investigations near the site had revealed Mid-Late Iron Age features. During this investigation 36 trial trenches were excavated revealing discrete archaeological features, dated or undated, generally located in the middle sector of the site. An isolated undated posthole and an undated gully were recorded as well as further undated features. A number of Roman pits and a small ditch were identified in some of the trenches. The most significant find was further evidence of a large ditch, which had been previously been noted in the 1999 excavation. The evaluation suggested that the ditch represented an enclosure ditch rather than a linear dyke. The present evaluation recovered pottery spanning the Late Bronze/Iron Age to the 2nd Century from the ditch fills. However, some evidence was recorded for previous cultivation of the area with plough marks under considerable depth of colluvial hillwash. In addition stray finds of prehistoric, Roman, medieval and later date were recovered from the hillwash layer. Andrew and Plumptons Yard, St. Andrews St. South, Bury St Edmunds (Report No.00/36) Tester, A Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 21pp, figs, tabs, ref An archaeological evaluation of the proposed housing site included the mechanical excavation of a trench across the medieval town ditch, which used to run along the western edge of the property. The section was not complete because the ditch extended under St Andrews Street beyond the property. The 3

4 bottom of the ditch was below the reach of the excavator, but was at least 3.8m deep. The trench also exposed the remains of the town bank, a buried topsoil sealed by the bank, and fragmentary remains of the medieval town wall, which had been inserted into the bank. The bottom of the town wall was bonded into another flint wall from a later building. This probably fronted directly onto St. Andrews Street, after the ditch had been infilled during the 16th century, and when the street was much wider. Angel Hotel, Bury St. Edmunds (Report No.2000/31) Tester, A & Anderson, S Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 64pp, figs, tabs, refs The excavation of two trenches in advance of building work uncovered a sequence of archaeological features dating from at least the 13th century. Historical sources suggested a long history of commercial premises fronting onto the Angel Hill. This was consistent with the archaeological evidence - numerous pits and several ovens were discovered which contained domestic-type waste. Of particular interest was the corner of a flint and mortar lined cellar, which may have dated from the 13th century. Its position, in what was presumed to be a backyard area, was unusual and, as yet, unexplained. A large amount of peg-tile and mortar footings was evidence of later medieval to early post-medieval buildings, probably stables and other outbuildings associated with the main street. [Au] SMR primary record number: BSE 168 Archaeological periods represented: EM, MD, PM Suffolk Coastal 2/425 (C ) TM BROAD STREET, ORFORD Archaeological Evaluation Report. 71 Broad Street, Orford (Report No. 2000/52) Meredith, J Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 23pp, figs, tabs, refs An archaeological evaluation, consisting of auger investigation and the excavation of three trial trenches, revealed that medieval walls, presumed to be part of the Friary, lay buried at a depth of up to 1m. One of these walls ran along the rear of the property on the line of the proposed extension of the house. Running at right angles to this and parallel with the boundary, another buried wall ran along the western edge of the proposed out-building. An earlier pit or linear feature, also of medieval date, was detected at the rear of the existing house. 5 Archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of five trial trenches, of the site identified archaeological features associated with the medieval management of the naturally formed Framlingham Mere. These included a mill leat, mere boundary ditch and mill bank, all previously known from documentary and map evidence. Structural evidence was limited to features of indeterminate function on the western bank of the River Ore. While the association of these features with a watermill could not be ruled out, it was considered more likely that they were related to an earlier bridge or river revetment structure. No. 2000/54) Boulter, S Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 52pp, figs, tabs, refs The archaeological evaluation of the site that consisted of the excavation of a single 1.5m by 66.5m long trial trench, recovered significant evidence associated with the medieval and post-medieval periods. Identified archaeological features included pits, postholes, ditches and a substantial building slot. The latter, which from artefactual evidence (ceramic) appeared to have been in use until the 13th or possible 14th centuries, exhibited substantial corner posts at either end of a continuous c.7.5m long slot. Record of an Archaeological Evaluation (Report No.2000/02) Boulter, S Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 39pp, figs, tabs, refs The archaeological evaluation involved the excavation of 4 trial-trenches, primarily located to evaluate the road frontages and areas of the site which may have been adjacent to the medieval green. Most of the archaeology identified in the evaluation was directly related to features and structures appearing on the Tithe Map and early editions of the OS maps, which included field boundaries and a series of tenement plots, with associated buildings. Other features identified were recorded along the western edge of the site, including a ditch of possible prehistoric date, a ditch of unknown date and a circular, chalk lined structure of indeterminate function with associated pit that included sherds of early medieval coarse ware pottery and a post-medieval handmade iron nail. Possible interpretations for the circular structure included; a rick-base, a base for a windmill or dovecote, none of which were very convincing, as the feature did not confirm to excavated examples of these structures. Record of Archaeological Evaluation (Report no.2000/05) Topham-Smith, C Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 16pp, figs, tabs An evaluation was undertaken in order to confirm the findings of an earlier geophysical survey and, in particular, to locate the moat on the western and northern ides of the site. A postulated west wing of the 5

6 Grade I Listed Hall and the resulting central courtyard area were also investigated. Seven linear trenches were excavated, these were complemented by 31 augured pits to establish an understanding of buried stratigraphy. [Au(abr)] 2/430 (C ) TM R.N.L.I. A Report on an Archaeological Evaluation, 2000 (Report No. 2000/62) Meredith, J Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 14pp, figs, tabs An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to proposed developments, consisting of the excavation of linear trenches. The investigation revealed three undated archaeological features along the NW edge of the site. St. Audry's Hospital, Melton (and Ufford) (Report No. 2000/61) Sommers, M Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 5pp, figs, refs An evaluation was undertaken to assess the extent and depth of surviving archaeology within the area of the former sports ground. Four linear trenches were machine-excavated to the depth of the natural subsoil. A single modern ditch was identified. Archaeological Evaluation Archive Report (Report No.2000/25) Meredith, J Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 46pp, figs, tabs, refs The archaeological evaluation, consisting of 25 evaluation trenches examined revealing two concentrations of archaeological features. One contained an area of post-holes, probably representing buildings. A ditch associated with the post-holes yielded pottery and a fragment of loom weight both dated to the Bronze Age. Animal bones were also recovered, mainly cattle and/or large mammal with a good level of preservation. A series of other ditches also crossed the site and although these might have been recent, there was insignificant proof at present. The other concentration of archaeological deposits contained evidence for both prehistoric and Roman occupation. The Roman presence was quite considerable and could have stretched from known Roman deposits previously excavated at Stow Park farm. The Shoals, Whapload Road, Lowestoft (Report No. 2000/41) Loader, T Ipswich : Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, 2000, 25pp, pls, figs, tabs An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of a trial trench, was undertaken on derelict land, lying at the junction of Lighthouse Score and Whapload Road. Whilst the Lowestoft Scores appeared to have been of medieval date, there was no indication of any activity on this site that was earlier than 18th century in date.
