1 ESSEX Braintree 2/281 (C ) TL CHURCH OF ST PETER AD VINCULA, COGGESHALL A Report on an Archaeological Evaluation at the Church of St Peter ad Vincula, Coggeshall, Essex Brooks, H Colchester : Colchester Archaeological Trust, 2000, 25pp, pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Colchester Archaeological Trust It was proposed to build an extension on the north face of St Peter's church, outside of the north door. A 10m long evaluation trench was excavated north-south through the middle of the proposed site. Grave cuts were located at between 700mm and 400mm below present churchyard level, these were sealed by a blanket of disturbed soil. The foundations of the north aisle wall were found to be modern masonry over a concrete foundation. A considerable amount of residual Roman material was identified during the evaluation. Fieldwalking Survey Gibson, S Braintree : Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit, 2001, 27pp, figs, tabs, refs An archaeological field-walking evaluation covering 11 ha of ground was carried out on the site of proposed agricultural reservoir. Background scatters of material were present for most periods, although some form of on-site prehistoric activity was possibly indicated by a large spread of burnt or fire-cracked flint in the north part of the survey area. 2 Peachey, M J Braintree : Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit, 2000, 2pp, fig An archaeological evaluation prior to the excavation of a wildlife pond revealed a single ceramic land drain of 20th century date. A single trench 93m in length and 4m wide was machine excavated across the area of the proposed pond. No features relating to the Roman villa in the adjacent field to the south were discovered. Archaeological Evaluation Vaughan, T Braintree : Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit, 2000, 29pp, figs, tabs, refs An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of 18 trial trenches, was undertaken on the site of a proposed winter storage reservoir. Archaeological features were only revealed within a single trench towards the southwest side of the development area. They consisted of two associated post holes and a NE/SW aligned ditch, which contained a very small quantity of struck flint, Early-Late Iron Age pottery, Roman tile and a single post-medieval tile. Plough marks on the surface of the natural clay and the lack of a defined subsoil indicated that the area had been truncated during extensive ploughing. However, the very small number of residual finds over the rest of the site indicated that it had probably never been extensively occupied. Archaeological Evaluation McKeand, S Braintree : Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit, 2000, 6pp, figs, tabs, refs An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on the site of a proposed residential development. The development area was situated approximately 75m west of Moulsham Street (the former Roman London to Colchester road), on the outskirts of the Roman town of Caesaromagus. Whilst the site lay outside of the second-century defences of the town, it was thought possible that evidence for extramural activities lay within the development area. Two 28m long evaluation trenches were excavated on the proposed development area. No archaeological features or deposits were identified in either trench, although four fragments of pottery were found in trench A and were dated as post second-century AD Roman pottery. An Archaeological Field Evaluation (682) Vaughan, T Hertford : Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust, 2000, 11pp, figs, tabs, refs An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of two trial trenches, was undertaken in response to a planning condition. The site lay 0.25km to the north-east of St. John's Hunting Lodge, a medieval royal building occupied until the mid 16th century. A small number of finds were found within the topsoil - struck flints (11), abraded prehistoric and Roman pottery sherds (4), a burnt flint, and fragments of slag (1) and post-medieval tile (4). No archaeological features were identified, and the surface of the natural had been disturbed by ploughing. Archaeological Evaluation Maynard, D Braintree : Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit, 2000, 13pp, figs, refs An archaeological evaluation was carried out on the site of a proposed residential development. The development area was situated close to Fenn Creek, where several sites of archaeological interest were recorded, associated with a buried land surface. Ten 40m-long evaluation trenches were excavated across the development area. The only archaeological feature recorded was an undated small ditch, uncovered in an evaluation trench excavated on the western edge of the development area. The ditch was probably part of an earlier drainage system, replaced by land drains in the 19th century. Several natural features were investigated; one of which contained a small quantity of fired clay. No evidence of a buried land surface or the gravel terrace deposits which lay to the east of the development were encountered. Site name/address: Abbott's Hall, Great Wigborough Brooks, H Colchester : Colchester Archaeological Trust, 2000, 1pp Work undertaken by: Colchester Archaeological Trust An area of 4.76 ha was field-walked in advance of the construction of a freshwater lake. There were a number of prehistoric burnt flints, which represented a previously unknown prehistoric 'site'. The significant cluster of burnt flints was trial trenched by means of three 1.5m wide trenches totalling 55m long. There were no features, apart from one intrusion of indeterminate origin. [Au] 2/292 (C ) TM LAND SOUTH OF FINGRINGHOE BALLSAT QUARRY, COLCHESTER Land South of Fingringhoe Ballast Quarry, Colchester, Essex. An Archaeological Evaluation (774) Murray, J & Crank, N Hertford : Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust, 2000, 18pp, figs, tabs, refs Field-walking on the site of a proposed new mineral extraction area revealed a light scatter of prehistoric flints in the centre of the main southern area of proposed extraction's. The flints included a number of tool types of the early Neolithic to Bronze Age. No evidence of the adjacent Saxon cemetery was discovered, though a single undiagnostic pottery sherd from the western periphery of the main southern land parcel may have dated from the Saxon period. Much post-medieval tile was recovered from the site, evenly distributed and probably derived from manuring of the site, rather than clusters suggestive of the presence of substantial structures such as barns. A 6km long evaluation trench failed to reveal any archaeological deposits or finds. There was reason to believe that there had been some truncation of the ground surface here. An Archaeological Evaluation (771) Boyer, P Hertford : Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust, 2000, 11pp, figs, refs An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in response to a planning condition. A geophysical survey had identified anomalies thought to have been associated with Roman kilns. Nine trial trenches were excavated on the location of the anomalies but no archaeological features or finds were revealed in any of the trenches. No finds were discernible within the ploughsoil. An Archaeological Evaluation (757) McDonald, T Hertford : Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust, 2000, 10pp, figs, tabs, refs Eight trial trenches were excavated as an evaluation in advance of the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. An undated tree hollow and a ditch containing 19th/20th-century material were revealed. Apart from a few frogged bricks and modern pottery and glass, no finds were found within the spoil arising from the trenching. Despite the high archaeological potential of the site for prehistoric and later occupation, being an area of higher ground with favourable soils for cultivation, no archaeological remains were revealed. Archaeological Evaluation Vaughan, T Braintree : Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit, 2000, 27pp, figs, tabs, refs An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of nine trial trenches, was undertaken. No archaeological deposits or features were identified during the evaluation and there was no evidence of substantial modern disturbance or truncation of the subsoils or natural matrix. A number of irregular clay and silt filled hollows and channels were interpreted as rivulets and other erosion features. Two partial horizons of relict turf were identified, but they contained modern china sherds indicating that they were recently buried surfaces. There was no evidence for the continuation of the Neolithic/Late Bronze Age settlement from the north although the small number of residual struck flints and pottery sherds primarily dated from the Bronze Age and confirmed that the development area was peripheral to that occupation. The evaluation revealed that deep ploughing had disturbed the area. Four residual struck flints were recovered and a post-medieval ditch was recorded, but no other archaeological features were revealed. [Au(abr)] 5

Archaeological Landscape Survey Heppell, E Braintree : Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit, 2000, 32pp, figs, colour pls, figs, refs A landscape survey was undertaken on the Anglo-Saxon Chapel of St Peter and the Roman Saxon Shore fort of Othona. A number of archaeological deposits were identified. The only visible standing remains of the fort were visible within a band of trees to the north of Linett's Cottage, consisting of a section of the south wall, standing to a height of 0.8m. A pronounced bank was located to the east of the position of the Western Wall of the fort, believed to have been remains of the wall. A dip was identified to the west of this, possibly a relict of the ditch associated with the fort. No traces of features were identified within the fort itself. A series of timbers were located to the east of the coastline, which ran parallel to the coast, probably forming the basis of a small quay, associated with the 'Tip Head' which was marked on the early editions of the OS. The landscape survey identified areas of disturbance and damage in the study area and these should be addressed as a management priority to prevent further damage. Parts of the wall were crumbling and needed to be recorded before further damage occurred. Archaeological Survey by Fieldwalking Gemany, M Braintree : Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit, 2000, 39pp, figs, tabs, refs Prehistoric, Roman, medieval and post-medieval finds were discovered during a field-walking survey of the Late Roman Saxon Shore fort, and Saxon chapel and monastery of Othona. Two pottery sherds and a small concentration of burnt/fire-cracked flint perhaps indicated the presence of prehistoric settlement. Extra-mural settlement was implied by the discovery of Roman brick and tile, although a dearth of corresponding pottery called this into question. Scatters of medieval and post-medieval pottery and tile suggested the exploitation of the area from the medieval period. The Saxon chapel and monastery possibly belonged to an aceramic phase because no Saxon pottery or other finds were discovered. The site lay within the historic core of Rayleigh, adjacent to the motte-and-bailey castle and within the assumed course of the outer bailey of the latter. No 6

The evaluation revealed a number of archaeological features, principally ditches, dating to the early medieval period. Two north/southaligned ditches appeared to be at odds with the present boundaries in the vicinity of the site, though respected the church alignment. However, ditch F1021, was aligned more closely to the present boundaries and also the longer axis of the castle earthworks. The ditches almost certainly related to property boundaries, possibly early glebe land before the creation of the old Guildhall boundaries. The north-south ditches, in particular, appeared to mirror the present eastern churchyard boundary. [Au(adp)] Archaeological periods represented: MD, UD 7
