SOMERSET Mendip 2/1142 (C.40.E011) ST PRIEST ROW, WELLS An Archaeological Evaluation at 2 Priest Row, Wells Report No.:222 Hollinrake, C & Hollinrake, N Glastonbury : C. and N. Hollinrake, 2001, 35pp, figs, tabs The archaeological evaluation within a redundant builders yard recovered evidence for medieval occupation on the site from at least the 12th century. Archaeological features included a property boundary ditch dating from the 12th century, as well as medieval cultivation soils. It was suggested that the north side of Wells High Street had encroached upon the original road line. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: MD, PM 2/1143 (C.40.E022) ST ST THOMAS STREET, WELLS St Thomas Street, Wells. An Archaeological Evaluation Broomhead, R A Shepton Mallet : R. A. Broomhead, 2002, 16pp, pls, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: R. A. Broomhead The desk top study of the area indicated that the proposed development site lay within an area of historic importance. The street has documented evidence of occupation from the early 18th century. The field evaluation identified a substantial late medieval boundary ditch, and remains of buildings known to have stood on the site since the 19th century. Evidence for earlier occupation could not be confirmed. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: MD, PM 2/1144 (C.40.E038) ST ABBEY QUARRY, DOULTING An Archaeological Excavation of Neolithic Ritual Pits in the Northern Extension of Abbey Quarry, Doulting Report No.:273 Hollinrake, C & Hollinrake, N Glastonbury : C. and N. Hollinrake, 2001, 78pp, figs, tabs, refs Re-opening of the quarry required stripping of the overburden within the extension area. As a result a series of truncated pits, some post and stake holes and a linear ditch were identified. The pits appeared to be ritual features, most dating to the Later Neolithic period. Two pits contained deer antlers, worked flint, animal bone, various types of non-local stones and sherds of Neolithic Grooved Ware pottery. The long ditch was also probably prehistoric but remained undated. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: NE, UD 2/1145 (C.40.E040) ST
GARSTON LODGE, VICARAGE STREET, FROME An Archaeological Evaluation at Garston Lodge, Vicarage Street, Frome Report No.:249 Hollinrake, C & Hollinrake, N Glastonbury : C. and N. Hollinrake, 2001, 49pp, figs, tabs, refs An archaeological excavation within a waste plot recovered a possible prehistoric pottery sherd and recorded medieval deposits and features. Large quantities of medieval coarseware pottery sherds indicated that the site was occupied between the 11th and 14th centuries, and then from the 17th or 18th century onwards. Archaeological Evaluation and Earthwork Survey Report No.: Chadwick, A Salisbury : Wessex Archaeology, 2001, 22pp, figs, pls, refs Work undertaken by: Wessex Archaeology The field evaluation of the site proposed for a community hospital consisted of five machine excavated trenches. Although two possible medieval enclosures were identified close to the site, no below-ground archaeological remains were identified. Only a few post-medieval and early modern finds were recovered from the topsoil. However, during the course of the evaluation, above ground earthworks were identified, including possible ridge and furrow. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: PM 2/1147 (C.40.E039) ST MAGDALENE STREET, GLASTONBURY An Archaeological Evaluation Behind Somerset House, Magdalene Street, Glastonbury Report No.:244 Hollinrake, C & Hollinrake, N Glastonbury : C. and N. Hollinrake, 2001, 41pp, figs, tabs An archaeological evaluation situated between Somerset House on Magdalene Street and Safeways supermarket recorded evidence for Roman occupation of the area and for intensive medieval settlement between the 12th and 14th centuries. The area was adjacent to the medieval deer park and items of cut antler waste were recorded. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: MD, PM, RO 2/1148 (C.40.E030) ST THE CHAPTER HOUSE AND CLOISTER IN GLASTONBURY ABBEY An Archaeological Investigation South-East of the East Cloister Walk Report No.:200 Hollinrake, C & Hollinrake, N Glastonbury : C. and N. Hollinrake, 2000, 27pp, figs, tabs 2
A permanently boggy area of ground situated east of the south-east corner of the cloister and south of the Chapter house prompted archaeological investigation of the area. The evaluation trench revealed a substantial wall footing, possibly the north wall of the dormitory, and a stone well or water tank. A modern drainage pipe was also uncovered. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: PM 2/1149 (C.40.E002) ST THE CHEESE SHOW FIELD GROUND, FROME The Cheese Showfield Ground, Frome, Somerset Report No.:9101/1/0 Adam, N Hindon : AC archaeology, 2002, 12pp, figs, tabs, refs The archaeological evaluation targeted a potential feature identified by an earlier geophysical survey of the site. The trenches uncovered a series of post-medieval field drains, a modern rubbish pit and two shallow features that may have been of prehistoric origin. 4 THE MARKET PLACE HOTEL, WELLS The Market Place Hotel, Wells, Somerset. An Archaeological Evaluation Report No.:RAB/14/01 Broomhead, R A Shepton Mallet : R. A. Broomhead, 2001, 18pp, pls, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: R. A. Broomhead A small scale intrusive evaluation was undertaken. A prior desktop study indicated that the site lay within an area of historic importance where archaeological features and finds could reasonably have been expected. The field evaluation showed this to be the case, producing evidence for the existence of a series of medieval drains, pits and post holes together with the foundations of a post-medieval building. [Au (abr)] Archaeological periods represented: MD, PM 2/1153 (C.40.E033) ST WESTHAY MOOR DROVE Archaeological Monitoring of Peat Permission P256 Land at Westhay Moor Drove Report No.:231 Hollinrake, C & Hollinrake, N Glastonbury : C. and N. Hollinrake, 2001, 12pp, figs An archaeological evaluation was carried out on two newly cut peat faces within the Peat Moors. The evaluation recorded the various peat layers. No artificial features or artefacts were noted within any part of the peat deposits. [Au(abr)] 2/1154 (C.40.E034) ST WORTHY FARM, PILTON Archaeological Investigation of a Quarry at Worthy Farm, Pilton Report No.:265 Hollinrake, C & Hollinrake, N Glastonbury : C. and N. Hollinrake, 2001, 13pp, figs, refs An evaluation on the site of a small quarry at Worthy Farm produced no archaeological features or finds. The study of documents and aerial photographs produced a sketch map of the prehistoric field system surviving on the farm and its relationship to the neighbouring Pilton Park. An Archaeological Evaluation Required for Class Consent Report No.:RAB/11/01 Broomhead, R A Shepton Mallet : R. A. Broomhead, 2001, 10pp, pls, figs, refs Work undertaken by: R. A. Broomhead A small-scale evaluation was undertaken on a proposed development site that lay within a Scheduled Ancient Monument area. The evaluation demonstrated the area to have been subject to modern disturbance, therefore there would be no discernible impact on any archaeology which may have existed in the area. [Au(adp)] 4

Buried features included two pits, a ditch interpreted as a field boundary, and a metalled track way. All features appeared to be of modern date. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: MO 2/1157 (C.40.E024) ST LAND TO THE REAR OF NO 13 LIME STREET, STOGURSEY An Archaeological Assessment of Land to the Rear of No. 13 Lime Street, Stogursey, Somerset Report No.:15121 Graham, A : Alan Graham, 2001, 3pp, figs Work undertaken by: Alan Graham There was no evidence of any formal use of this area before the medieval period, when the land was probably open ground within the backland area of medieval burgage plots laid out along the west side of Lime Street. This use of the area had continued to the present day, though the ditches which defined the plots had become filled in completely by the 20th century. Evidence from the trenches indicated that these Romano-British buildings were situated on a previous Late Iron Age occupation site: in this connection, it was noted that the area is known locally as Blacklands. Little pottery or other datable material was found in the buildings. The occupation evidence suggested the building increased in size and grandeur but was abandoned sometime in the fourth century. 6 Report No.:ASI 3185 Moffat, B Warminster : ASI Heritage Consultants, 2001, 17pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: ASI Heritage Consultants The evaluation site revealed largely natural soils and deposits, including a shallow palaeochannel. Small amounts of heavily abraded artefactual material, a single sherd of Romano-British Black Burnished Ware pottery and individual fragments of ceramic building material were recovered. These were considered to have been transported alluvially from deposits distant from the site. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: RO South Somerset 2/1160 (C.40.E031) ST BACK STREET, ASH, NEAR MARTOCK An Archaeological Evaluation at 35 Back Street, Ash, Near Martock Report No.:254 Hollinrake, C & Hollinrake, N Glastonbury : C. and N. Hollinrake, 2001, 63pp, figs, tabs An archaeological evaluation undertaken within an old orchard revealed features dating from the Neolithic/Bronze Age, Iron Age, medieval and post-medieval periods. The earlier features included a circular pit and a shallow scoop or gully. The Iron Age features comprised a series of narrow ditches or gullies and possibly a large ditch. Medieval pottery sherds within deposits and features suggested that occupation on the site had commenced by at least the 12th century and continued through the medieval period. A substantial possible late medieval stone building foundation was recorded. This building appeared to have been robbed or dismantled after its demise in the mid 18th century. The site remained unoccupied from that date until the present day. Result of Measured Earthwork Survey Report No.:4501/1/0 Corney, M & Valentin, J Hindon : AC archaeology, 2001, 3pp, figs The area was recorded by total station and by photographs. The site comprised two strip lynchets following the contours of a north facing slope. At the west end the terminals were marked by a narrow but very pronounced ditch running north-south. This had traces of a slight bank on either side and was clearly a major boundary feature. The strip lynchets were assumed to have generally been of post- Roman origin. 7 Work undertaken by: Peter Leach Archaeological Consultant Despite the proximity of the site to the core of the medieval village of Curry Rivel, there was little evidence for activity or occupation here. A few small worn sherds of coarse medieval pottery were recovered. However, it seemed likely that this low lying and possibly ill drained locality may have discouraged human occupation on this particular site. [Au(adp)] Archaeological periods represented: MD 2/1163 (C.40.E037) ST DIMMER LANDFILL SITE, NEAR CASTLE CARY An Archaeological Excavation of an Iron Age Paleochannel Within the Southern Extension of the Dimmer Landfill Site Near Castle Carey Report No.:256 Hollinrake, C & Hollinrake, N Glastonbury : C. and N. Hollinrake, 2001, 50pp, figs, tabs The archaeological excavation of a natural palaeochannel and the investigation of a series of artificial ditches cut through this palaeochannel recovered pottery sherds and animal bone fragments. The pottery sherds indicated that the environments of the palaeochannel were being exploited from at least the Middle Iron Age and that by the end of the Iron Age the channel had silted-up and new drainage ditches were being dug through the surface of the channel. A second smaller excavation to the southwest recorded areas of burnt clays and an undated ditch or gully, all probably dating to the prehistoric period. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: IA, PR 2/1164 (C.40.E001) ST FORMER YOUTH CENTRE, HIGH STREET, WINCANTON An Archaeological Field Evaluation for a Proposed Development at the Former Youth Centre Site, High Street, Wincanton, Somerset Report No.:3001/1/0 Robinson, S Hindon : AC archaeology, 2001, 8pp, figs, tabs, refs An archaeological field evaluation was carried out on a proposed housing development site. The trenching revealed evidence of earlier landscaping on the site. The episode was carried out during the 17th or 18th centuries, where part of a buried soil horizon was sealing the surviving lower levels of a medieval pit. Hollinrake, 2001, 16pp, figs, tabs 7
An archaeological evaluation within a small paddock on the southern edge of Bower Hinton recovered structural evidence and finds relating to 18th and 19th century occupation on the site, and a few small and abraded medieval pottery sherds. Archaeological Evaluation Report No.:2201/1/0 Adam, N J Hindon : AC archaeology, 2001, 7pp, figs, tabs, refs The area of proposed development lay in a region of high archaeological potential and within 50 metres of a suspected Roman villa. The excavations uncovered no archaeological deposits, features or artefacts. [Au(abr)] 2/1168 (C.40.E008) ST MANOR COURT COMMUNITY SCHOOL, CHARD Manor Court Community School, Chard. An Archaeological Evaluation Report No.:RAB/1/01 Broomhead, R A Shepton Mallet : R. A. Broomhead, 2001, 10pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: R. A. Broomhead A small scale intrusive evaluation and limited desk-based study was undertaken to provide an initial assessment of the likely archaeology. The desk-based assessment indicated that the site comprised an orchard in the historic past. The evaluation produced no clear evidence of any significant archaeological activity. [Au(abr)] 2/1169 (C.40.E013) ST MANOR FARM, HOLTON, WINCANTON An Archaeological Field Evaluation for a Proposed Dwelling at Manor Farm, Holton, Wincanton, Somerset Report No.:7100/1/0 Robinson, S Hindon : AC archaeology, 2001, 6pp, figs The archaeological field evaluation on the site of a proposed new dwelling at Manor Farm revealed largely negative results. Only 19th century infilling and levelling deposits were encountered. There was no evidence of pre-modern activity in the form of features or finds. [Au(abr)] 2/1170 (C.40.E026) ST NORTHOVER MANOR HOTEL, NORTHOVER, ILCHESTER An Archaeological Evaluation at Northover Manor Hotel, Ilchester Report No.:247 Hollinrake, C & Hollinrake, N Glastonbury : C. and N. Hollinrake, 2001, 36pp, figs, tabs, refs 8
An archaeological evaluation undertaken within the yard of Northover Manor Hotel recovered finds and features of the Romano-British and medieval periods including 1st century Durotrigian pottery sherds and a coin of Vespasian. A Romano-British west-east oriented infant burial marked by a small headstone was also recovered, but not unduly disturbed. The report made the suggestion that this area of Northover, in the vicinity of St. Andrew's church, might have been the location of the earliest Roman settlement at Ilchester. This was focused upon the possible early fort site, visible as crop marks in Kings Hams, some 200m south-east of the church. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: EM, MD, PM, RO 2/1171 (C.40.E016) ST PERROTT HILL SCHOOL, NORTH PERROTT An Archaeological Evaluation at Perrott Hill School, North Perrott Report No.:227 Hollinrake, C & Hollinrake, N Glastonbury : C. and N. Hollinrake, 2001, 35pp, figs, tabs Proposals to construct tennis courts at the school resulted in the excavation of two archaeological trenches. A few abraded residual pottery sherds were recovered and a buried soil of Iron Age/Roman date and two small gullies were identified. The density of archaeological deposits was far less than that at a previous excavation close to the site, where the Iron Age and Romano-British settlement area was assumed to be. In addition, no finds were recovered to suggest any activity on the site pre-dating the development of the school. [Au(adp)] 2/1173 (C.40.E009) ST ST BARTHOLOMEW'S CHURCHYARD, YEOVILTON St Bartholomew's Churchyard, Yeovilton, Somerset Report No.:49185 Wessex Archaeology Salisbury : Wessex Archaeology, 2001, 8pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Wessex Archaeology The evaluation trenches revealed three shallow features. Two of the these features were severely truncated and ephemeral, and contained abraded material. These were interpreted as natural features. A more substantial pit was also recorded containing medieval pottery and fragments of animal bone. The features and finds were consistent with domestic activity of the 12th to 14th century. Although the site was situated close to the presumed centre of the medieval settlement of Yeovilton, the extent and nature of the features located suggest peripheral rather than intense activity. The evaluation located a deposit dated 17th century or later. It was cut by a shallow east-west aligned ditch containing modern artefacts. Shallow features found on the eastern side of the site suggested terracing had occurred between the medieval period and the present day. In addition, deep soils sealed a small linear feature and a shallow pit containing animal bone fragments and medieval pottery. These features and deposits were indicative of activity on the possible periphery of an early settlement. A grave was investigated which provided evidence for being dug through the fill of earlier graves. No trace was found of the undisturbed geological sequence. It seemed clear that the church had been used for burial over a long period of time and was consequently very full. 11 Norton, A Oxford : Oxford Archaeology, 2002, 16pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Oxford Archaeology An archaeological evaluation, comprising the excavation of six trial trenches, was undertaken in advance of a proposed housing development. The evaluation revealed a ditch which was probably medieval, and two non-archaeological features. No other archaeological remains were seen, although the south-western part of the site appeared to have been landscaped in the late part of the 20th century. An Archaeological Evaluation Leach, P Shepton Mallet : Peter Leach Archaeological Consultant, 2001, 8pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Peter Leach Archaeological Consultant The archaeological evaluation identified small slate fragments, charcoal and clay pipe stems that indicated 18th and 19th century agriculture. This material may well have originated from domestic refuse from the nearby town, spread over the fields to increase the fertility. A shallow linear feature encountered probably represented a field boundary. Material recovered from the subsoil deposits were the earliest datable evidence for human activity. No other features or deposits of archaeological significance were seen. Terracing and levelling, or the erection of buildings within the farmyard, would most probably have destroyed the bulk of any other archaeological evidence. The locality of the site was therefore likely to have been outside the boundary of occupation related to the medieval village of Combe Florey. [Au(adp)] 2/1181 (C.40.E041) ST CRS YARD, MAGDALENE STREET, TAUNTON Archaeological Excavations at CRS Yard, Magdalene Street, Taunton. Archive and Summary Report Report No.:01.19 Higbee, L Exeter : Exeter Archaeology, 2001, 104pp, pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Exeter Archaeology The archaeological excavation identified the earliest phase of activity on the site. This was represented by the construction of the borough defences in the 12th century. The town ditch appeared to have been 11
re-cut sometime in the 14th/15th century when there was also evidence for a post built structure on the site. By the time of the Civil War the partially infilled ditch was used as a secondary defensive line. Fatalities from the fighting were dumped into the ditch and quickly covered over. Later phases of activity included the burial of a horse in the 16th/17th century, a pit, post-holes and gullies dating to the 17th to 19th centuries.
