The weather has been improving by the day and it looks like spring has officially arrived. With the longer days and warmer weather most of us are making plans for the next few months to spend time outdoors. For most of us, there is nothing better than spending a weekend on the river or at fish camp with our loved ones. Have fun and be safe! Fishing season is approaching and we would like to encourage everyone planning to harvest fish this summer to please pay attention to their surroundings, as well as the state and federal fishing regulations that are being enforced up and down the Kuskokwim River. The Chinook (King) Salmon run returning this summer is projected to be better than in years past, but please take note and try not to harvest more than is needed so that future runs are given a chance to replenish, as salmon are such a valuable food source for those up and down the river. Annual meeting It is that time of year again to start planning the annual Georgetown meeting. The meeting usually takes place in late July or early August and was held in Aniak last year. We would like some ideas and/or feedback in regards to where and when this year s meeting should take place. Please feel free to contact any of the council members or the Georgetown office if you have any recommendations or questions about the meeting. Tribal Council Annual Election There are two (2) council seats up for re-election this summer. Those seats are currently held by David Buddy Kutch and Tamara Vanderpool. If you are interested in getting your name on the ballot or have questions about the roles and responsibilities of a council member, please contact one of the council members or someone in the office for more information. Other things we are thinking about in the office are roads, mines, and land. It has been over a decade since Georgetown was deeded lands for Tribal Members to build homes and we have yet to have a successful applicant finish the permitting process. Currently all lots are unpermitted with the last permits expiring in The land committee has been working on revamping to application process and we have Tribal members interested in developing in Georgetown. The topic of allowing non-tribal members to aquire resedential lots in georgetown has come up and we wold like to hear your thoughts on that. This leads us into roads. Part of the reason for little movement on roads was lack of development on lots, so as we look to improve the homesite lot program we are looking to move forward on our roads contracts, which are predominantly for planning and design. We are also working on updating our Long Range Transportation Plan and including a safety program in the plan which would allow the Tribe to contract for safety programs under BIA Transportation. Also on the horizon is the Donlin Mine; we would love to hear form you all about your thoughts on the mine. Regardless of the outcome, this will signal a significant change to the region. The Tribe has yet to take an official stance on the mine as of yet, and we understand it can be an emotional and divisive topic, so let us know what you feel and think about it. 3 In Memory Of... It is with heavy hearts that we must announce the passing of Tribal Council Member Vanessa Evans. Surrounded by friends and family, Vanessa was put to rest Thursday, May 19 in her hometown of Bethel, Alaska. She has served on the Council since Vanessa is survived by her parents Jo Ann Evans and Leonard Bic Samuelson, her son Devin Hoffman, and sister Jackie Evans. 4 Our Environment Burning in Rural Alaska: Burn Barrel Many residents in Alaska use a burn barrel to burn their trash, especially in remote areas. Burning in Alaska is more regulated in certain areas than in others and at certain times of the year. Generally the larger cities and villages and some boroughs have burning regulations. The Alaska Division of Forestry s burning regulation covers most of the lands along the road system. Before you begin burning, check with your local fire department or Division of Forestry office for current information on burning regulations. Occasionally the fire conditions become so severe that all outside burning is suspended. This is called a burn suspension. These burn suspensions can be specific to certain areas or statewide. It is important that you know when a burn suspension is in effect for that area you want to burn in. Burn suspensions are advertised on statewide television and radio stations. The local fire department and the Division of Forestry office will also have current information on any burn suspension that is in effect. In the following sections are some burn barrel guidelines, basic burn barrel design, and burn barrel setup information. Burn Barrel Guidelines Do not put plastics, garbage, rubber, styrofoam, asbestos or any items that do not readily burn into your burn barrel. Clean wood, paper, and unwaxed cardboard can be burned in many communities. The material you burn should be as dry as possible; feed the fire in small amounts to make sure they are completely burned. Keep the fire in the burn barrel going strong so that your items will burn thoroughly and completely. This will result in a cleaner, less smoky burn. Do not allow the burn barrel to smolder, especially overnight. Burn in your burn barrel only when the wind speed is less than 10 miles per hour. Remember: ANYONE using a burn barrel is responsible for a fire that escapes as a result of negligence. If you start a fire, you are responsible for it until the fire is completely out! A fire in your burn barrel must be put out immediately if a health official or public safety authority asks you to. Be sure to have the appropriate tools and water on hand to be able to do so quickly. Be aware that fire officials may close an area to burning. Check with your local authorities before you begin to use your burn barrel to find out if there are special burning requirements. 5 Our Environment Basic Burn Barrel Design Choose a clean metal barrel in good condition. A 55-gallon drum size is recommended. Cut out the top of the barrel. Cut three evenly spaced, three-inch square draft vents around the lower section of the barrel. Cover the vent openings with 5/8-inch woven metal mesh screen, and make a cover for the top with the same screening. continued on page 6 Visit: 5

6 continued from page 5 Setting up a burn barrel safely: Clear ground down to mineral soil at least 10 feet on each side of barrel. Mount barrel 6-10 inches off the ground on metal legs or cement blocks. Back the bottom vents with half inch mesh, or punch holes no greater than one half inch on sides of barrel. Cover barrel with hardware cloth or lid with holes that are no greater than one half-inch. Locate the burn barrel at least 30 feet away from any structure and 50 feet away from any underground or above-ground utility corridor. Make sure there is a water source nearby. clear an area ten feet wide around the burn barrel down to bare soil. Be aware that fire officials may close an area to burning. Check with your local authorities before you begin to use your burn barrel to find out if there are special burning requirements. 7 What s Cooking? Peanut Butter Granola Bars "These make a wonderful healthy treat! Use chopped nuts in place of or with the dried fruit if you like." Ingredients 1/4 cup peanut butter 1/3 (12 ounce) jar honey 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 cup granola 1 cup quick cooking oats 1 cup puffed rice cereal 1/2 cup chocolate chips 1/2 cup chopped dried mixed fruit Directions Melt peanut butter and honey together in a saucepan over medium heat. Dissolve brown sugar into the peanut butter mixture; bring to a simmer for 2 minutes. Mix granola, oats, rice cereal, chocolate chips, and fruit together in a large bowl; pour peanut butter mixture over the granola mixture and fold to coat. Grease a cake pan. Pour the granola mixture into the prepared pan and press into a flat layer. Cool at room temperature until set, about 15 minutes before cutting into bars. Allrecipes.com Visit: 7

Summer &Olympics Trivia In the 1904 St. Louis Games, hometown boy George Eyser, who lost his left leg as a youth after it was run over by a train, won gold in the parallel bar, long horse and rope climbing events.
