18 CROOKED CREEK TRADITIONAL COUNCIL Letters to the Editor Good folks at Donlin Creek mine were saviors for flood victims About 11 p.m. Sunday night, the Kuskokwim River broke in front out our village of Crooked Creek. Water came up so quickly with walls of ice that it was life or death for a number of households. No one has ever seen it this high before. Our bridge over Crooked Creek was completely immersed, and there was no way to get people from the upriver side of the village to the airport. An elderly couple loaded their boat with survival gear only to have it swept away by the strong current of the floodwaters. I called Bill Bieber of Donlin Creek (the gold mining project 13 miles north of Crooked Creek) very early Monday Morning because floodwaters continued to rise and our people needed evacuation. By this time the water was chest high in homes, and there was no electricity. Without hesitation, he immediately mobilized and brought a helicopter with floats from Anchorage to Crooked Creek to shuttle people to the airport for a flight on Vanderpool Flying Service to Donlin Camp. Everyone at Donlin welcomed us and made sure we all had food and a warm place to sleep. There is no possible way we can ever thank the Donlin Creek people for all they have done for us. Mr. Bieber brought four Donlin employees to help with the evacuation including Donlin s paramedic, Ricky Ciletti of Aniak. Fifty-three people were evacuated, and Donlin paid for everything. Many of the people were evacuated without shoes or socks or a coat. We have warm shelter and excellent food at the Donlin Camp. The Donlin helicopter has been taking food and water to the people who are still in the community. Their generous employees have worked hard to take care of us. No one from any agency or organization could have responded to our dire need so quickly and efficiently. Donlin has been, and with the disaster proves once again, what a good, responsible neighbor they are. We are very thankful that there was no loss of life or serious injury, but we are now faced with the immense task of rebuilding our lives. Seventy percent of our community is under water. Homes with all our personal possessions have been destroyed with water and ice. While we have a huge task ahead of us, at least we are safe for now.
