Martin Luther SONNY MEADOWS is a ±443 acre Ranch Estate originally homesteaded circa 1850 in the central Sierra Nevada Mountains of California approximately 9 miles by horseback or 12 miles by SUV, South of Yosemite National Park. It is completely surrounded by forest service lands and while very private and secluded, it is only 4 miles from Highway 49 via maintained roads. The ranch elevation ranges from a low of 4,200 feet at the Southwest corner to 5,120 feet on the Eastern boundary. Other than for the occasional heavy snow years, the site is readily accessible on a year-round basis. The majority of the property is mountainous and heavily forested containing spectacular sections of open meadows totaling approximately 100 acres making it one of the largest privately owned mid-elevation meadows in the central Sierras. There are 7 lakes on the property totaling 9.17 acres, with the largest being 4.63 acres and the smallest being less than one acre. Private and secluded, Sonny Meadows is completely surrounded by forest service lands.

William Haxlitt The first recorded owners were the Hogan family who had American Indian ancestry and named Hogan s Peak nearby. The Higgins family was the second owners of the property and they renamed the ranch Sonny Meadows in honor of their son who loved the ranch but was killed during WWII. The Breuner family from San Francisco was the third owners of the property and they sold it to the Vern Van Ness family of both San Francisco and Fresno fame. Vern Van Ness developed the property utilizing the natural springs that produce many gallons of crystal clear water per day. He also built the original single story residence on site while raising horses and cattle. Sonny Meadows is now owned by a family trust and during the mid 1990 s they personally expanded the original residence using heavy milled timber harvested from the ranch. The lodge is now two stories high totaling approximately 3,000 sq.ft. plus covered porches facing the meadow, with eight bedrooms, eight baths, two kitchens, a parlor and dining areas. The water system is from the natural springs onsite. The Lodge s electricity is supplied from a portable generator, propane gas is available from two separate tanks and a septic system services the sanitation needs. The family trust owners built the approximately 6,000 sq.ft. barn originally raising cattle, horses and mules on the property. The barn has lofts on both sides, an arena and the associated corrals.
