Meet our Camp Directors Dear campers, Growing up at Girl Scout camp started my love of the outdoors and getting girls interested in all things camp has to offer from in camp programs to our fantastic Wilderness Trips. I have been a camper since I was six years old and then a staff member from counselor to Camp Director. The best part of camp is meeting new friends from all over the world who are like my family. Join me at camp this summer to make your own lifelong friends. See you there! Dear campers, Lisa Puck Freeman Camp Birch Trails Director Hanging out at camp is my favorite way to spend the summer. My Girl Scout camp experiences have taken me from backpacking in the Teton Mountains at Girl Scout National Center West to Savannah, GA and canoeing and kayaking many lakes and rivers in Michigan and Wisconsin. I ve been working at Girl Scout camp for over 30 years and truly believe in the impact it will make in a child s life. Every girl who comes to Camp Winnecomac will feel at home among the trees and with our camp staff who have the passion to work with the girls to discover a life in the wilderness. Can t wait to see YOU at camp this summer! Linda Murphy Levin Camp Winnecomac Director 4

6 Unplug, unwind, and know she s safe You can let go. We ve got her back and her hand. Your child will be both safe and cared for at camp. We know that in today s world parents depend on being in contact with their children in an instant via smart phones. Sometimes it is difficult to remember a time when knowing what children were doing minute to minute was not a guarantee! But we re here to remind you that it is healthy. And normal. And necessary. In order to experience the full benefits of camp, campers are not permitted to have cell phones or devices which keep them plugged in and connected to their responsibilities at home. We believe, and research supports, that time away from screens and free from the expectation of connection to anything but the green space in front of them renews the soul. Girls will connect with nature, each other, and most importantly their inner selves as they learn new skills and tackle new challenges with the caring support of counselors in a safe and nurturing environment. So, please do not expect photos, texts, or phone calls from camp staff or your child during their time with us. Parents should rest assured that our staff are highly trained and dedicated to providing the comfort and encouragement campers crave while helping them adjust to their time away from home. Occasional bumps, bruises, stings, and scrapes are part of life at camp and will be treated with care and concern. Parents will only be notified if medical attention requires parental permission. We ve got this! Camp grows with your girl Every year your girl grows, her tastes and interests change, and things that were once her favorite are now yesterday s news. At camp, we get that. We know what girls are interested in at every age level and we offer amazing ways to get outside, explore, and have an awesome time with other girls just like them. For giggly, fun-loving little girls, we have great programs where they can get their feet wet (sometimes literally) and try to camp out for the first or second time. If they are brave and ready, they can even try an overnight. For girls a little older we have amazing horse, water, art, and other programs where they can connect with other girls like them and learn some incredible outdoor skills that ll have them bursting with confidence. Older girls can do SO MUCH MORE at camp! Both at camp and on our fabulous Wilderness Trips tween and teen girls can really find themselves. They ll learn leave-no-trace camping, adventure the trails and waters of the Northwoods, and even explore a city or two. For more information on Wilderness Trips visit gsnw.gl/wildernesstrips or call for a brochure. 5

21 For Girls in Grades 5-12 We offer three types of Wilderness Trips: backpacking, canoeing, and kayaking each with their own unique progression. Programs vary each summer. Each trip level represents a progression where the skills learned and applied become increasingly advanced. Level 1 covers outdoor basics like pitching a tent, building a fire, basic camp fire cooking, jackknife safety and more. Level 2 and 3 build upon these basics with weather emergency preparation and increasing canoe or backpack skills like advanced paddle strokes and identifying water sources on your route. Levels 4 and 5 take it up a notch, building on years of Wilderness Trip experiences, requiring expert proficiency in everything from use of a compass and navigation, to reading a river and running rapids. If you are craving a challenging, high-adventure experience where you ll be called on to make important decisions, navigate your path, and lead others, then a GSNWGL Wilderness Trip is the experience for you! For more information on Wilderness Trips visit gsnw.gl/wildernesstrips or call for a brochure. 20
