2 ABOUT OUR STUDY LEADER MARTHA A. (MARNI) SANDWEISS is a historian of the United States, with particular interests in the history of the American West, visual culture, and public history. She received her Ph.D. in History from Yale University and began her career as a photography curator at the Amon Carter Museum in Ft.Worth, TX. Professor Sandweiss taught American Studies and History at Amherst College for twenty years before joining the Princeton faculty in Sandweiss is the author or editor of numerous books on American history and photography. Her publications include Passing Strange: A Gilded Age Tale of Love and Deception across the Color Line (2009), a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in History and the National Book Critics Circle Award in Biography, and Print the Legend: Photography and the American West (2002), winner of the Organization of American Historians Ray Allen Billington Award for the best book in American frontier history and the William P. Clements Award. Her other works include Laura Gilpin: An Enduring Grace (1986), winner of the George Wittenborn Award for outstanding art book, and the co-edited volume The Oxford History of the American West (1994), winner of the Western Heritage Award and the Caughey Western History Association prize for the outstanding book in western history. At Princeton, Sandweiss teaches classes on western American history, public history and narrative writing. She is also the founder and director of the Princeton and Slavery Project, and is presidentelect of the Western History Association. Gather this evening for a welcome reception and dinner. Overnight: Hotel Albuquerque DAY 2: JULY 22, SUNDAY (B,L,D) ALBUQUERQUE, NM CHINLE, AZ (CANYON DE CHELLY) Today begin to explore the traditional pueblo and Navajo ways of life with a drive west to the the Acoma Pueblo, which dates back to the thirteenth century and is one of the earliest continuously inhabited communities in the United States. After lunch, drive to Canyon de Chelly, a living memorial commemorating the forced removal of the Navajo during the expansion of the United States in the mid-1800s. The area provides a fascinating look at the present-day life of the Navajo people who again occupy the canyon and live both in it and along the rim. Overnight: Thunderbird Lodge DAY 3: JULY 23, MONDAY (B,L,D) CANYON DE CHELLY, AZ Get a closer look at Canyon de Chelly s distinctive architecture, artifacts, and rock art today with a ride through the canyon in four-wheeldrive vehicles and an optional hike to the White House Ruins. This afternoon learn about the Navajo education system during a discussion with Dr. Sandweiss and Benjamin Barney, Director of Dine Teacher Education Program at Dine College, the first college established by Native Americans for Native Americans. 4 DAY 4: JULY 24, TUESDAY (B,L,D) CHINLE, AZ SHIPROCK, NM FARMINGTON, NM BLOOMFIELD, NM Drive to Shiprock, the stunning rock formation standing 1,500 feet above the high-desert plain of the Navajo Nation and meet Perry Shorty, a well-known Navajo silversmith who is a Princeton parent. Continue further west to the Aztec Ruins in Farmington, NM. Finish your day with a barbecue dinner and overnight in Bloomfield, NM. Overnight: Best Western Territorial Inn and Suites DAY 5: JULY 25, WEDNESDAY (B,L) BLOOMFIELD, NM CHACO CANYON, NM - SANTA FE, NM Depart Bloomfield for Chaco Canyon, home to the densest and most exceptional concentration of pueblos in the American Southwest. Enjoy a guided archeology tour of this special place and learn of its sacred significance to the Hopi, Navajo, and Pueblo people. After lunch, drive east to Santa Fe, our home for the next four nights. DAY 6: JULY 26, THURSDAY (B, D) SANTA FE SANTA ANA PUEBLO SANTA FE Today, call in to the Santa Ana Pueblo, located just south of Santa Fe and home to about 500 residents. A small, conservative pueblo, Santa Ana is open to visitors only once a year: on July 26, the feast day of the Pueblo s patron saint, Anne. There are dances from morning to night. Representatives from many other Native American tribes come to this celebration but there are very few tourists. This will be a very special opportunity for visitors to experience a vital and vibrant expression of Native culture, both ancient and modern. DAY 7: JULY 27, FRIDAY (B,L) SANTA FE LOS ALAMOS SANTA FE Today tour Los Alamos, home of the infamous World War II-era nuclear weapon research program, the Manhattan Project. Our guide will share stories of growing up as a child at Los Alamos and her encounters with famous scientists working on the atomic bomb. Upon returning to Santa Fe, enjoy a private tour of one of the best collections of Native Art in the world with the School for Advanced Research s President, Michael F. Brown 72. Dinner this evening is at leisure with free time to attend the acclaimed Santa Fe Opera.* * Royal Road Tours, Princeton Journeys partner travel operator for this program, will distribute additional information about opera showtimes, tickets and prices upon receipt of reservation. 5 DAY 8, JULY 28, SATURDAY (B,R,D) SANTA FE This morning experience the festive atmosphere and authentic artistic traditions of the Santa Fe Spanish Market, the oldest and largest of its kind in the United States. This afternoon, visit The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian which offers unique exhibitions of contemporary and historic Native American art. Gather this evening for a celebratory reception with local Princeton alumni followed by a farewell dinner to relive your Great American Southwest memories. DAY 9: JULY 29, SUNDAY (B) Transfer to the airport for flights home. WHAT S INCLUDED: Professional Royal Road Tours on-site tour manager. 6 OPTIONAL POST-TRIP EXTENSION DAY1: JULY 29, SUNDAY (B,L) SANTA FE Guided tour of the International Folk Art Museum and Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. DAY 2: JULY 30, MONDAY (B) SANTA FE TAOS / PUEBLO DE TAOS SANTA FE At an altitude of 7,000 feet, the Pueblo of Taos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the best preserved pueblos north of the border defined by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848). Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure to explore the many gallery displays of regional artwork in the historic town of Taos. On the drive back to Santa Fe, stop in Las Trampas, a Spanish colonial village established in DAY 3: JULY 31, TUESDAY (B,L) SANTA FE - ABIQUIU - SANTA FE Enjoy a guided tour of the Georgia O Keeffe Museum, which houses 150 of her works. Georgia O Keeffe was devoted to creating imagery that expressed what she called the wideness and wonder of the world as I live in it. After the Museum, depart for Abiquiu and visit Ms.O Keeffe s home and studio which is dedicated to her life, American modernism, and public engagement. 8 REGISTRATION, DEPOSITS AND FINAL PAYMENTS To confirm and secure your reservation, a deposit of $1,000 per person per program by check, Mastercard/Visa, American Express or Discover card is due upon registration. Final payment including any extension program is due 90 days prior the scheduled program departure. CANCELLATION AND REFUND Refunds will be made if a participant cancels for any reason 90 days prior to commencement of the tour, less a $ administrative fee. If a participant cancels for any reason 89 to 60 days prior to the trip, Royal Road Tours will keep 50% of the total cost of the tour. If a participant cancels for any reason less than 60 days prior to the commencement of the tour, Royal Road Tours will retain 100% of the total tour cost.
