President s report August 2013 Hello all! Just a brief report this month: I ve been on sick leave, but on the mend now. The accommodation saga continues. The good news is that we now have a storage location and work site. Peter Higgs has negotiated for us access to a level, vacant site at Prince of Wales Bay. He and Ainesley Smith put in some sterling work and cleared and gravelled a substantial portion of it, in preparation for a shipping container to be located there. Peter also sourced for us a container in superb condition. It s claimed that the container has had only one voyage, and it certainly looks that way. See the pictures. We ll soon start to move into it some of the material that needs long-term storage, such as the timber remaining from the Terra Linna project and the material for our model boats. The situation with respect to the Cottage remains unresolved. We are Mariners Cottage Battery Point looking at a range of options for a meeting place and library location, but nothing has yet been resolved. We d be happy to consider any other options that members are aware of. Our members event this month was a washout. My record with winter events continues! This winter I d organised to have a rowing day at Geilston Bay. We planned to bring Terra Linna across from Prince of Wales Bay, but the weather was such that we were forced to abandon the event. I must say sorry to those of you whose day was spoiled. Hopefully, our August event will benefit from better weather. Graeme Hunt has booked the South Wilderness Camp at Dover for a selfcatering weekend event. Details are elsewhere, and I urge you to consider joining the group. In July (& before) we paid $214.82, August will be $298.16, while September on is $217.47; an increase of $2.65 per month. Many months, our income is less than the insurance bill. Savings Account Balance $ , down $3600, interest earned $ Check Account Balance: $ , less unpresented checks of $ One big expense paid: container $3575. Coming up: Terra Linna Cover expense: $ , plus hardware to secure it Did you know: It can cost almost $2.80 to print and post each copy of the Skeg? That was last month s bill, when we had to buy envelopes and stamps (both having spares for later issues). Terra Linna report August 2013 Due to the efforts of Rob Nolan and yours truly Terra Linna was ready to go for the WBGT Geilston Bay day out. Many thanks to Rob who did a lot of work behind the scenes in the preparation and repairs. The Terra Linna sub committee has met for the first time to further discuss the cover for Terra Linna and then both sail makers were asked to re-consider their quotes given further instructions from the sub committee. We also need to resolve if we can fix the boom table where required or if tis will require adjustments to the sail. Just of late the weather has 2

3 been against us to check this by hoisting the main. I will have a mock up of an adjustable boom table at the next meeting for consideration. The cover quotes have been resolved but we will wait for a full committee meeting at the next meeting on the 19 of August. We need to set a working bee to prepare Terra Linna for the Tall Ships event. I suggest this be held on the 14th and 15th of September location to be confirmed as she should go on the slip. The working bee details will be confirmed at next weeks meeting. Work to be done includes; Sanding and varnishing of all bright work. Rigging fine tuning and finish oiling of all blocks. Fitting of the mast table. Checking of sails. Fitting prep for the cover. Additional bolt to the stem to overcome bow sprit strain. Re paint the deck. Recoat anti fouling plus fitting of anodes. We also have to get her to her berth in Constitution Dock and arrange/roster sailing crews. Then return sail her to Prince of Wales Bay Marina. From the Editors Desk For August 2013 The RAT is No more! After much cunning the rat succumbed to a big oily Mackerel inside a possum trap en-route to the warm cabin of Seaspray. I just have to deal with the after smell now. Also completed this month has been the installation of the new Going Down, next level, Davey Jones locker! There is a chance that we may be able to purchase another second hand container for between $600 One container on site at Prince of Wales Bay. Photo Peter Higgs and $850. It is dependent on the results of a tender placed by the bobcat owner. On a more interesting note we are only a few weeks away from the Hobart Tall Ships event which is a staging point for many Tall Ships making their way to Sydney for the Australian Tall Ships event. Here is event information from the AWBF Tall Ships web site for members not having access to see the site. To celebrate certain special anniversaries it is traditional, in the maritime world, to convene a gathering of great ships from all corners of the world. When the invitation comes from a national defence force it is known as a Fleet Review. Such a gathering was seen last when Australia celebrated its bi-centennial in 1988 and the Tall Ships came to Hobart. The parade of sail in the River Derwent drew thousands to the waterfront to see these beautiful ships, including the British Government s handsome birthday gift to Australia the 239-tonne brigantine Young Endeavour. Another great anniversary is approaching - the centenary of the Royal Australian Navy s first entry into Sydney Harbour in October In the run-up to this very large event the fleet will visit a handful of other ports with strong maritime traditions. In September 2013, a great procession of sails will be seen in the Derwent as the Tall Ships come to Hobart once more. 3

4 The five-day Tall Ships program will include ship tours, special sailings, exhibitions and activities in Princes Wharf One, entertainment, a Grand Parade, fine Tasmanian food and wines, a special schools program and much more. Coming as it does just before the International Fleet Review in Sydney, you will get the chance to see these great ships first in Hobart s beautiful Sullivans Cove. We have a stunning fleet of international and Australian tall ships for you to see. Here s a list that allows you to find details of each of these vessels and a little of their history. Don t miss the display of historic Tasmanian vessels in Constitution Dock. Remember that access to the Hobart docks and to Princes Wharf No.1 is completely free. If you would like to go on board the tall ships, you will need a Ships Passport. You can order one on-line here or purchase on site at the Princes Wharf ticket counter. Ships open 10:00am to 8:00pm. Last ticket sales on site at 7:00 pm. Tall Ships featuring in Hobart include: The seven visiting ships that will join Lady Nelson and Windward Bound include, Lord Nelson, Oosterschelde, Soren Larson and Tecla. 5 Geilston Bay Rowing Day report August 2013 On 21 st July, the weather was so foul that we could neither have the day at Geilston Bay nor retreat to Prince of Wales Bay. It was a real pity but common sense had to prevail. I am confident this venue will re-appear on the WBGT Calendar asap. I also formally apologise to the Geilston Bay Boat Club for the event not proceeding as I am aware they had gone out of their way to make us welcome whilst at the same time looked forward to seeing Terra Linna. Huon Show TBC 17th November Trip Leader Trip Leaders responsibilities; the Trip Leader is to confirm meeting paces and times (including maps) for the Skeg edition prior to the event. Skeg closing time is 1st Monday for text and 1st Monday for photos every month. Following the event the Trip Leader is to provide a short story and up to 5 of their own photos, sized and titled (as file name) appropriately, of the event for inclusion in the following Skeg. Members wishing to submit photos from the rowing days are required to provide a maximum of five to the Trip Leader so that we do not get same/similar contributions. All must be sized as below with a title as the file name. Members wishing to submit articles & photos: All members articles and photos are most welcome as contributions for the Skeg or other publications. For the Skeg, articles are preferred to be in MS Word with no formatting. Members are asked to restrict their photographic submissions to 5 In total per month and to have resized the photos to the following specs. No PDF s please! 400 Pixels wide X 300 Pixels high, or 5.7 cm wide X 4.2 cm high, with a resolution of 180 pixels per inch are also welcome. The journal articles need to be articles of value regarding restorations, research and Maritime heritage. Journal articles need to include all due acknowledgements and titled photos. The above conditions also apply. All SKEG articles and photos must be with the editor in a digital form with no formatting by the 1st Monday of the month. General Meetings are on the 3 rd Monday of each month, inc. public holidays except in the month of December. The next General meeting will be held on Monday 19 th August 2013 at the Mariners Cottage, Napoleon Street, Battery Point commencing at 7.30 pm There will be a committee meeting commencing at 5.30pm, at which members are welcome to attend.
