1 Editor: Peter Higgs Volume 16 Number 4 October 15 th 2012 Stop Press! Clarence Seafarers Festival Sunday October 28th (This Sunday) Trip Leader Graeme Nichols We are short of volunteer members to set up the site at 9.00am and move Terra Linna from her mooring to the Festival site. We also need volunteers to dismantle the site at 3.00pm and return Terra Linna to her mooring in Kangaroo Bay. Please contact Graeme Nichols at Graeme.nichols@bigpond.com or phone him on to confirm your commitment to help. President s October Report 2012 We had a good roll up at the last meeting and thanks to Graeme Broxam for showing us his collection of vintage nautical post-cards. Why is it, that older style racing yachts (early 1900 s) look so much better that their modern boxy fibreglass counterparts of today? Brian Marriott gave a talk last Tuesday, at the Maritime Heritage lunch box, for the Maritime Museum on the research the Guild has taken on in relation to the history of Piners Punts. This research is ongoing and we should have the full report completed in due course. The President s Dinner was a great success I believe and thanks have to go to Cheryl for doing most of the organising with Brent Burgess of the DSS who provided a great meal. Unfortunately he did refer to us as the Australian Wooden Boat Guild even though communications had suggested otherwise. What sort of President doesn t attend his own dinner I ask? Well, in a nutshell, I had work commitments. Thanks again to Rob Nolan and his Terra Linna monitors and the weekly reports. Once we get the rig in and get a proper boom tent manufactured it should make life a lot easier. There will be a full report later in this edition. We ve got the Bellerive Seafarers Festival on 28 October and the Huon Show 17 November coming up. If you can assist at either of these events please make it known to any of the committee members. Also, at the Bellerive Seafarers Festival we will be holding our blindfold rowing race. So, we will need members to bring along their dinghies and to be part of the general fun and games. This month s meeting will be held on Monday October 15 and not forgetting the Committee meeting starts at 5:30pm and goes through to 7:00pm and the General meeting and presentation starting at 7:00pm. Fair Winds Roscoe Secretary s October Report 2012 The Seafarers Festival will be held this year on Sunday, 28 October at the Bellerive Boardwalk. As usual the Guild will erect a marquee with displays and products to sell. The Guild will also be organising an event on the water and will require a couple of rowing dinghies during the morning program I will know more about this by the General Meeting. Graeme Hunt and I are organising the Guild s effort on the day. Please note this day in your diaries.

2 The Guild will also be attending the Huon Show on Saturday, 17 November and would like to display several boats. If you are able to help please let the Committee know. The Guild receives a number of newsletters from other Clubs or Organisations. Notable articles from these publications include: The Log (WBA Qld) Good article on trailers and their maintenance. Also featured is an article on the restoration of Nancy. Scuttlebutt (WBA NSW) Article on making a traditional helm (well illustrated). Shavings (WBA Vic) General club news. Crows Nest (WBA SA) Article on L Hermoine, a 26 gun French Frigate circa urements before we finally step the mast in the 2nd or 3rd week of November. To add to the complexity of time lines the ropes Anastasia ordered for the rigging has had a delivery hold up from the UK. It should be available in Hobart at the end of October. Also I have had the bow roller for the anchor cast at Retlass and with many hours of polishing and turning of the roller plus fitting the same this fitting is now ready to fix to the bow sprit. Many thanks to members who have vigilantly been led by Rob Nolan to keep a watch on Terra Linna on her mooring in Kangaroo Bay, Bellerive. Thanks Rob and Team. Peter Higgs I will leave these newsletters in the designated containers in the storage room prior to the next General meeting. Graeme Nichols Terra Linna October Report 2012 After reporting that we would have the mast reshaped at Denman Marine I was advised that running the design through CAD we would save 7 Kg in the weight of the mast and reduce its strength by up to 50%. On this advice we agreed not to proceed with the alterations. As such, I have picked up the mast at Denman Marine and returned it to Noel s place to re-fit the cross trees and mast fittings in preparation for stepping of the mast. Anastasia has been proceeding with the rigging with the old blocks re-juvenated and some new locks made to suit the new rigging. The to-ing and fro-ing with the mast has held up some of her rigging work and she will now visit Noels s place and the Terra Linna to re-check meas- From the Editors Desk October 2012 I have been advised by the Wooden Boat Magazine that the article to be included in the November- December edition, Currents section will ow be published in the January - February edition. I dare say we are in the lap of the Wooden Boat Magazine Gods with this but keep an eye on the January - February edition of Wooden Boat Magazine. We might just make it. As reported Brian Marriott and I were to present at the Maritime Museum Tasmania Lunch Box talks on the Piners Punts. I must thank Brian for presenting my research component at the last minute as I was required to attend a work meeting in Melbourne on the same day. Brian has indicated that there was great interest in the Origins of the Piners Punt so many thanks for doing my part as well as the MMAPPS Project report Brian. I have sent off more s to further research the Irish connections. Recently we had a Model working bee at my Berriedale work shop. The purpose was to complete model kits for sale at the Bellerive Seafarers Festival and the 2

3 Huon Show. On the day we completed enough model kits to have stock of some 50 models. We will need to have another working bee before the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in February The models prove to be a great fund raiser for the Guild so I urge members to become involved in this critical project to keep the Guild financial. To emphasise the urgency of this project I quote our Treasurer: Whoever gets the merchandise at the cottage, grab all 4 plastic boxes and let the sellers know that one is full of shirts. Two boxes are set up as basic kits with a little of everything and I think this causes many people to think we have no shirts. I even rechecked the boxes at the last meeting and it still holds from the stock take. Also, I saw NO model kits in the boxes! [these are with Roscoe] Huon Show: As for the Huon Show, that's also before the next meeting so it's a busy period. This morning I ed the Show secretary to ask for a site plan. If I get it, I will send it around so everyone knows where we're going this year. I'll also have to look for volunteers to attend, and collect everything we need in advance. The notable things I need to find is tents, followed by kits. Selling things: Can we please try to encourage our members to engage passersby [sic] and after an experience from the last show also position the tent right at the front of our allocated space. With the launch of the Terra Linna, we have lots to talk about with the public. So as we get closer to the forthcoming Festival season it gets busier, so lets all pitch in and make it a lighter load! Finally some may remember that when I attended the Geelong Wooden Boat Festival our Melbourne based member Bob Hamillton visited and took off the lines of my Fazackerly dinghy Seaspray Too. Bob has sent this photograph of his final model product of Seaspray Too. Well done Bob and lets hope we get to see it at the 2013 Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart. At the last meting it was suggested that we return to the bar-b-q style meetings. If this is agreed to there will be a Sema4 advising the same before the November meetin. Peter Higgs Editor September 2012 Rowing Day, Franklin, 23rd September report Trip Leaders: Graeme Broxam and Graeme Hunt. Franklin Rowing Day Our trip to Franklin was again a great success. The WBGT has been to Franklin on the banks of the Huon River every two or three years. This time the special attraction was to visit our David Murphy Memorial Award recipient Andy Gamlin who has recently taken over the Wooden Boat centre. We also wanted to see the St Ayles skiff that Robin Singleton has been promoting since he visited Ian Oughtred in Scotland. Robin had also talked to David Nash about going aboard the Yukon. I arrived about 10:10 and Rob and Jo Nolan were already on the water and rowing through the canal. Others arrived about 11 and Jim launched Velela and Brian launched Cats Cradle. Because of the weather forecast I had left Teepookana in town. As it turned out the rain came and no more rowing took place. A day that looked promising in the early hours became progressively greyer as the morning progressed. Despite this, about 25 members and friends, including some from the Vintage Boat Club of Tasmania, arrived at the Wooden Boat Centre in time for Andy Gamlin to begin a tour a little after 11 a.m. The Wooden Boat Centre has a number of interesting projects on the go, fuller details of which can be read on their web-site These include: Andy Gamllin showing members a new prarm dinghy in his Franklin boat shed. 23ft. auxiliary yacht PEGGY, designed by Adrian Dean though inspired by a Francis Herreschoff design as a showpiece for Tasmanian timbers and traditional design, 23ft. trailer-sailer PIPE DREAM, being built from timbers recycled from 2km water pipe recently rebuilt on the West Coast, as well as a canoe currently being 3

4 built from the same materials by Bass Gamlin, 25ft. motor launch GEORGINA, built about 1938, which has been extensively restored as an electric launch, and 28ft. auxiliary cutterrigged yacht Graeme Broxam and Noel Hall inspecting Clara CLARA, built in 1892, currently being restored for WBG member Graeme Broxam. The BBQ was interesting with cooking in the BBQ shelter and eating in one of Andy s sheds. There was even some work going on up one end with a family working on a nice skiff. We were joined by more member s families and friends so our numbers were up around 30. Thanks go to the Mortons for the BBQ. Some then visited other attraction such as the Lunch time Bar-B Q under way nearby antiques centre. We brought forward our visit to the Living Boat Trust and Peter Laidlaw showed us the St Ayles Skiff being built by the Women on Water group. It is certainly a great design The St Ayles Skiff under construction and an excellent job by the ladies. The LBT shed made some of us a little jealous. Although still raining steadily about 14 people went to look over the Yukon, a traditional Danish timber fishing vessel which was re-floated and restored by David and his wife in Denmark. After chartering there, they sailed to Australia. Currently based at Franklin and building in a watertight bulkhead so they can charter in local waters the Yukon will be a feature vessel at AWBF 2013 in February. Thanks go to all who helped organise and attend another successful rowing day. Graeme Hunt and Graeme Broxam November 2012 Rowing Day, Clarence Seafarers Festival Sunday October 28th (This Sunday) Trip Leader Graeme Nichols We are short of volunteer members to set up the site at 9.00am and move Terra Linna from her mooring to the Festival site. It was a great night! Editor The great Dinner Quiz prepared by Cherelle and Robin again!
