Shasta Sno-Mobilers Mission Statement Regular Club Meeting - 02/07/03 Meeting called to order by Eileen Maier at China Dragon in Yreka at 7:41pm. Twentythree attending. Minutes approved as mailed from 01/10/03 meeting. Current balance $ Reimbursement for Jan. newsletter to Eileen for $16.22 photocopies and $37.00 for stamps, totaling $ Eileen wanted to know if the Club s BlueRibbon dues were paid, Ann said yes. Nordic Bypass: Club ride is scheduled for March 1st. The ride was canceled due to the snow conditions. There are some concerns over the cinder pile at the Ski Park Road and the M31 Road turnout. Members were not in agreement that it has been maintained properly and out of the way of snowmobilers. Dick Cowardin said there has been time when he s passed there and the cinder pile was all over the place and they had their equipment in the turnout also. Not enough room to unload sleds. This is something that will have to be watched next season when and if we have more snow. Warming Huts/Sheds/Snoparks: 1) Deer Mt./Chuck Best Park: Michele from the Fun Factory reported that they are logging out of Chuck s Park. The loggers asked Michele which route would be less intrusive to us that they use. Michele suggested the lower loop. Thank you to the loggers for helping to keep Chuck s Park open for snowmobiling! 2) 4 Corners/Medicine Lake: There is no snow at the Park. 3) Door Knob: Nothing new. 4) Pilgrim Creek: The total amount of items taken from the Groomer Shed is over $ They took a floor jack, a winch and mounting kit for the groomer, snowshoes with carrying bag, along with the other things listed earlier. Phil Carey has been doing a lot of extra work on the shed (fixing doors, putting up security signs). Thank you Phil for your work! Also thank you to our volunteer groomers, Phil Carey, Russ Elgin, Russ Miller and Daren Valdez. Phil said that Eileen donated a security sign for the groomer shed, thank you Eileen. USFS: 1) Klamath National Forest: Nothing new. 2) Shasta/Trinity Forest: Nothing new. Groomer Reports: 1) Klamath: 2/7/03 groomer report - 4Corners, Doorknob, Medicine Lake, Little Mt. Hoffman, 4Corners 2 times on Monday and Friday. Lost Springs Loop to play area on Tues. Lyons Peak, Bullseye Loop on Weds. There is 4ft of snow at snowpole at Medicine Lake. 2) Shasta/Trinity: 02/02/03 report from Ed Hatakeda - Cut a path for snowmobiles over the top of Trout Creek Butte (Junction 43 to 48) on Friday. Should be passable by snowmobiles only. Most of the logs were still there for later removal by the snowcat. This route is not groomed yet. Once the trees are out of the way, we will be taking the groomer through there. Estimated depth at Trout Creek Campground is 2 feet with about 3 feet on top of the Butte itself. Main trail between Pilgrim Creek and Chuck s Park was groomed Saturday night with the Mogul Master. Thank you to Daren from the Fun Factory for assisting with this ef-

2 March 7, 2003 Regular Club Meeting - 02/07/03 - Continued fort. On the McCloud side, there is little snow from Pilgrim Creek to Junction 41. Late March-early April conditions are in this area. Watch out for plenty of bar pavement and dirt on the trail. The conditions from there at about a mile from Junction 8 (Whale Back turn off) are pretty good now that the holes were filled in north of jackrabbit Flat with the grooming effort. Watch out for the trees that are continuing to surface as the snow melts. Icy conditions on the trail needs to be a concern for track lubrication and cooling. Below that point, there were a couple of small patches of pavement showing. Snow at Chuck s Park is very thin. There is only about a foot on the trail close to the Park. The most snow seen on the grooming trip was around Jack Rabbit Flat. It is only about 3 feet there. Patrollers reported the trail around the North side of Ash Creek Butte (Junction 10 to 42) is still pretty good. Watch the parking lot at Chuck s Park. There is plenty of ice. The trail between Pilgrim Creek Park and at least Junction 47 has big patches of pavement showing through. Riders need to assess the bare pavement conditions prior to taking this route. It won t be long before sections between Junctions 40 and 41 will be in the same condition. 02/06/03 report from Ed Hatakeda - Grooming is starting up again. Plans are to have the Ash Creek Butte Loop groomed tomorrow. Phil Carey and Russ Miller are going to meet here at 7 to get started. The snow is getting pretty bullet proof again so I am not too concerned about the melt. Where I am concerned, it is mostly pavement. If time permits, I will ask them to make a start moving logs off the Trout Creek Loop. I am sure they won t get it done and still have time for Phil to make it to the meeting, but we are planning on going out next week to do some more. The main trail will be done to Chuck s Park Saturday night. Reports that I got is that the trail held up pretty well from when Daren and I went through so it shouldn t be too bad for the Saturday riders. I suspect that we will only be able to get up to the Whaleback turn off before we start running into slim snow. The Pilgrim Creek Road is now plowed to just past the Cramer Springs intersection (point 47 on the map). A large turn around was plowed out for the users. We did this because of the amount of bare pavement showing. Use caution when driving beyond the park. The road still has ice on it and is rough in several places. Plans are to do the same to the Sugar Pine Butte Road between the Park and Ash Creek Mill sometime next week. We are doing this for the same reasons. If and when we start getting snow again, we will reestablish the plow berm at the park on both sides. Phil let us know tonight that they did not get to groom today. They found that there were four lug nuts missing off of one of the wheels on the groomer, not in stock, had to order them. So they will try it again when the lug nuts come in. Phil was very glad that they found the missing nuts, and he was also glad that Ed was one of the last ones to take the groomer out. It is a long day grooming from Pilgrim Creek to Chuck s Park and back again. It is very easy to miss things like that. 3) Modoc: No current report, nothing new. OHMVR: Looks like grant requirements are changing again. This is not official, but scoop has it that this is the way it's going to be. The funds available for the winter program will be split this way; 54% will be going to Law Enforcement & Conservation. 33% will be going to Restoration. And the rest, just over 20% will be going to Operation. (Operation is grooming, road plowing, restroom cleaning, maintenance, etc..) Eileen asked Ed about starting a parking permit program for our area. This has to be done through the FS, and they need to get it approved though the County Supervisors. Is this something that the Club would support? We could have the fund help with the plowing into the Snowmobile Parks. Members attending the meeting thought this was a great idea. The funds could help out with keeping the Snowmobile Parks open during the winter months. All users would be helping to keep them open. Members voted to have Eileen write a letter to the FS asking them to look into this. Members do want to make sure that the funds are only used for plowing and not put into some general fund. Eileen will get a letter off to Ed Hatakeda. CNSA: Nothing new. Safety: Kid's Safety Certificates.. We have 10 or so kids in the South County and a few so far in North County wanting to attend this course. Carmon is trying to get ahold of someone from OR to see about their program and make sure they will honor our certificates. Due to the snow conditions, it looks like this will have to be something we take care of early next season. This will give us some time to get everything together also. Public Relations: Nothing new. Medicine Lake Projects (Dick Cowardin & Eileen Maier): Nothing new. Mercy Air Ambulance (Barbara McPherson): Barbara was here to remind everyone about what Mercy Air Ambulance will provide. Annually dues are up again in the end of May, Barbara will be sending out notices soon. For more information call Barbara at 530/ Adopt-A-Highway (Dick Holcomb & Bill Willison): Nothing scheduled. Memorial Plaque for Chuck: We have $ donated to the plaque. This includes: $50.00 donation from Ernie & Joan Bowen and the $ from the New Year's Breakfast. Per the Breakfast, We served around 45 people. Eileen and Kenny donated all the food and the door

Door prizes were safety survival things (fire starters, safety whistles, waterproof matches, and space blankets) and they went to: Dion Meadows, David Meadows, Dave Holleman, Mollie Elgin, Margaret Wheeler, Dick Cowardin, Dick Anderson, and Matt Garayalde. Wilderness Intrusions: Please stay out Membership News: of the wilderness. Xmas Tree Farm: Might be quite awhile until we worry about getting the groomer through here. We never did hear from Becket and Becket. Eileen found out that some of the Becket and Becket property was sold, but not all of it. And some of their Christmas Tree Farm area was not sold. Eileen doesn t know if it is our area or not. Sled Dog Race: They have not turned in any paperwork to the FS as of yet. Time is running out. We have not heard from them either. It seems the race will be happening, just a get together and not a sanctioned race. Club Snowmobile Kids Ride: We need to pick a date when we can do this. Dion has Friday s and Saturday s off, as long as it s not storm- Newsletter Label: Your address label shows your current membership status. The (Sept. 03) next to or below your name means your membership is current. If there is a (Comp) there, the newsletter is a complimentary copy for nonmembers. Copies go to every member, to local Chambers of Commerce, local Visitors Bureaus, to local FS reps, and to State snowmobile organizations. This mailing we sent out 48 newsletters (this includes possible ones in the future.) and ed 67 newsletters. Campaign: Eileen purchased Adobe Acrobat 5.0 software. This will allow us to convert the newsletter to a.pdf file which you can read with Adobe Reader 5.0 software. Adobe Reader is free and can be downloaded off the Internet. If you do not all ready have it, just log onto and download. If you provided an address on your application you will be receiving your newsletter via an now instead of through the normal post office. You will be able to print out the newsletter and share it with your family. This will allow the Club to save funds on photo copying and postage. With your address, you will also be receiving any and all information that has to do with snowmobiling and/or land and personal rights issues. We don t expect you to read all of it, but some of it is very interesting. You will also receive current snow conditions, groomer reports, upcoming events and hotlines. We d like to thank everyone for renewing and welcome our new members. It is important that we keep our total Club numbers high. We are having to fight harder and harder to keep our riding areas open, and with all of your help, we will make a difference. "Charlie Daniels' Open Letter to the Hollywood Bunch" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OK -- Let's just say for a moment you bunch of pampered, overpaid, unrealistic children had your way and the U.S.A. didn't go into Iraq. Let's say that you really get your way and we destroy all our nuclear weapons and stick daisies in our gun barrels and sit around with some white wine and cheese and pat ourselves on the back, so proud of what we've done for world peace. Let's say that we cut the military budget to just enough to keep the National Guard on hand to help out with floods and fires. Let's say that we close down our military bases all over the world and bring the troops home, increase our foreign aid and drop all the trade sanctions against everybody. I suppose that in your fantasy world this would create a utopian world where everybody would live in peace. After all, the great monster, the United States of America, the cause of all the world's trouble would have disbanded it's horrible military and certainly all the other countries of the world would follow suit. After all, they only arm themselves to defend their countries from the mean old U.S.A. Why you bunch of pitiful, hypocritical, idiotic, spoiled mugwumps. Get your head out of the sand and smell the Trade Towers burning. Do you think that a trip to Iraq by Sean Penn did anything but encourage a wanton murderer to think that the people of the U.S.A. didn't have the nerve or the guts to fight him? Barbra Streisand's fanatical and hateful rankings about George Bush makes about as much sense as Michael Jackson hanging a baby over a railing.

7 March 07, 2003 You people need to get out of Hollywood once in a while and get out into the real world. You'd be surprised at the hostility you would find out here. Stop in at a truck stop and tell an overworked, long distance truck driver that you don't think Saddam Hussein is doing anything wrong. Tell a farmer with a couple of sons in the military that you think the United States has no right to defend itself. Go down to Baxley, Georgia and hold an anti-war rally and see what the folks down there think about you. You people are some of the most disgusting examples of a waste of protoplasm I've ever had the displeasure to hear about. Sean Penn, you're a traitor to the United States of America. You gave aid and comfort to the enemy. How many American lives will your little, "fact finding trip" to Iraq cost? You encouraged Saddam to think that we didn't have the stomach for war. You people protect one of the most evil men on the face of this earth and won't lift a finger to save the life of an unborn baby. Freedom of choice you say? Well I'm going to exercise some freedom of choice of my own. If I see any of your names on a marquee, I'm going to boycott the movie. I will completely stop going to movies if I have to. In most cases it certainly wouldn't be much of a loss. You scoff at our military whose boots you're not even worthy to shine. They go to battle and risk their lives so ingrates like you can live in luxury. The day of reckoning is coming when you will be faced with the undeniable truth that the war against Saddam Hussein is the war on terrorism. America is in imminent danger. NAHB REACTS TO CLEAN WATER AUTHORITY RESTORATION ACT OF 2003 LEGISLATION WASHINGTON, March 3 - National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Executive Vice President Jerry Howard issued the following statement in reaction to the February 27 introduction of the "Clean Water Authority Restoration Act of 2003." "The Clean Water Authority Restoration Act of 2003 would, in effect, elevate roadside ditches to the same level as wetlands connected to the Everglades. This is akin to regulating anything done on any blade of grass in the country. The bill is short-sighted, as it simply serves as a knee-jerk reaction to a perceived need, not a documented one. It also fails to address the comprehensive problems associated with the Clean Water Act Section 404 program for wetlands regulation. Rather than furthering the protection of wetlands, the bill will exacerbate existing inefficiencies and tread on the carefullyplanned state and federal balance envisioned by the Clean Water Act for protecting the nation's waters. If Congress wishes to begin the debate to amend the Clean Water Act with this type of legislation, then we would welcome that debate. We also want Congress to ensure that the Clean Water Act includes an efficient permitting process for development activities in wetlands that have minimal impacts on the environment. We used to have such a program -- it was called the Nationwide Permitting Process. But wave after wave of restrictions have made an efficient permitting program under the Clean Water Act practically extinct. Most people would probably not consider a typical roadside ditch to be a part of a tributary system. Yet that is exactly what this legislation would do. This level of "protection" would be prohibitive in cost and diminish the ability of federal agencies to protect other, more valuable aquatic systems. We should also keep in mind that the intent of Congress with the Clean Water Act was to protect and regulate "navigable waters of the United States" that can be used for interstate commerce, not just any vernal pool, prairie pothole, or puddle that can only be navigated by a water molecule."
