Shasta Sno-Mobilers Mission Statement A nonprofit organization of dedicated snowmobilers working together to promote the safety and pleasure of snowmobiling for everyone s greater enjoyment of the sport. We work to retain for your multiple-use and enjoyment your National Forests and other public lands. We provide you with a vital link to others whom enjoy your sport. Snowmobile Wilderness Violations I'm sure all of you have heard by now that there is a big push by law enforcement personnel to patrol Wilderness areas from snowmobile violators. The Serria's have been getting hammered hard (complete with aircraft watches) and so has our own Brewer Creek area. Our local FS has written over 20 tickets for snowmobile wilderness violations in the Brewer Creek area alone this season. And although most of the tickets were not handed out to Club members, some of those tickets went to Club members. Doc and Eileen have received calls from Barry Jones with the OHV Commission and he is very concerned about our Club members getting these tickets. Mostly because it does not make us (the Mt. Shasta Sno- Mobilers) look good. With the appointment of two "Greenies" to the OHV Commission, they are using every possible avenue to discredit the OHV program along with the snowmobiling community. Eileen fears their long-term goal is to shut down the OHV Grant Program totally. Even CNSA has been getting heat for all the snowmobile wilderness violations and they are encouraging all snowmobilers to obey the laws and stay out of the wilderness. As a Club, we do not wish to patrol our own membership, or to turn members in for violating wilderness boundaries, but as a Club we must also take the stand that it is against the law to ride snowmobiles in wilderness areas. Whether you believe in the snowmobile ban from wilderness law or not, it is the law and until it's changed we need to obey it. By violating the wilderness boundaries on your snowmobile, you risk the chance of larger/more buffer zones, area closures, and more bad publicity for the snowmobile community. Motorized recreation as a whole is going through some real trying times. There is not much a single individual can do to preserve our recreational areas other then writing letters, support local groups, donations and standing together. But we can be responsible for our actions and obey the laws whether we agree with them or not. This, in the big picture will help the most to preserve our snowmobile communities and areas for the future. Please help spread the word, "The FS is busting snowmobiles in the wilderness, please be careful and don't ride in the wilderness." If you don't know where the wilderness starts, don't even go there. The Brewer Creek area is marked, if you follow the old road to the end and keep going you ride right by a Wilderness Boundary sign. Chances are great that you will be caught. There are tons of great riding areas out there, don't be stupid and pass them by, don't take that chance, please! (Eileen) Page 1
2 Month 03, Date 10 Year 00 CALL TO ORDER: Meeting called to order by Eileen Maier at 7:38pm at China Dragon in Yreka. TREASURERS REPORT: Balance as of last meeting, 2/11 of $ Checks Written: $65.10 Dave Holleman, $390 CNSA 50/50 Raffle Tickets, $5 UPS Shipping of 50/50 tickets, $99 Postage & $30.22 Snow Phone. Deposits: $244 50/50 tickets & $40 Memberships. Balance as of 03/10 is $ STANDING COMMITTEES: Nordic Bypass: We have a ride scheduled for tomorrow. The Nordic Center is having their 2001 Season Demo on new equipment for x-country skiing also tomorrow between 10am and 2pm. This would be a wonderful time to have several snowmobiles politely ride through our bypass. Meet at Chuck s Park and Pilgrim Park around 10:30am. The two groups can meet someplace along the M31 Road (the road has been groomed for us). Take your lunch and you can eat near the bypass. Eileen will not be able to participate in the ride, she has company for the weekend. (Not in the minutes: I don t know if anyone attended the ride.) Warming Huts/Sheds/ Snoparks: 1) Deer Mt./Chuck Best Park: Nothing. 2) 4 Corners/Medicine Lake: Nothing. 3) Door Knob: Nothing. 4) Pilgrim Creek: Nothing. USFS: Due to new personal and law suites in the OHV Program there are some new regulations that the FS will now have to abide by. Fist thing is they have to open up the operation and maintenance of their snowmobile trails and trailheads for public comment. Jim Stout & Ed Hatakeda have placed notices under Legal Notices in the newspapers have been REGULAR MEETING MINUTES from 03/10/00 mailing out the request for comments to several groups. The comments need to be in by March 22. You need to take the time to comment on this program, hopefully stating that you support the continuation of the program with hopes for expansion. Since this is now being open up for public comment, it gives the opportunity for others to say they would like the program done away with. If we don t show our support by letters, we could lose grooming, warming huts, areas, or worse, everything. This is not a time to sit on your butt and let everyone else get involved. The second thing is the expansion of law enforcement and resource monitoring which will require more funds and time. You can call Jim Stout at 530/ or send your comments to Jim Stout, Goosenest Ranger District, Hwy 97, Macdoel, CA To save time, please make your comments general on our entire area, then send your letter to Ed Hatakeda, Mt. Shasta Ranger District, 204 E. Alma Street, Mt. Shasta, CA & to Modoc National Forest, 800 W. 12th Street, Alturas, CA This will cover all our bases. Eileen offered to get a quick letter out for the Club and take the time to mail it out with a note to all members. She did not fell that she would be able to get the newsletter with the info out in time. Dick Cowardin offered to write the draft to help out. Members attending the meeting voted to have Eileen send out a special notice to the membership. Groomer Reports: 1) Klamath report (Tucker): Groomed with the Maxi, Lost Springs loop to Steven's Pass back to 4-Corners, to Doorknob to Medicine Lake and back on Tues. and Weds. Packing Thurs, more Lost Springs loop to Little Mt Hoffman. About 8+ new up high, about a foot at 4-Corners, Medicine Lake has 9 feet. 2) Shasta/Trinity report (Bombardier): Groomed Chuck s Park to Pilgrim Park, made a short trip up the north side of Ash Creek Butte to cut through the drifts in the plantation at the switchback. Groomed from Pilgrim Creek to the Ski Park (that s the M31 Road). Groomer returning to Pilgrim Creek. Chuck s Park had a good 6-8 inches of fluff Wends with very high drifting on top of Pomerroy Ridge and past the cattle guard south of Pinto Springs. Watch yourselves on the top of Popery, it s drifted badly and if you went off the side, you would not make it back up. Pilgrim Creek had 1 foot of new stuff as of Thurs. CNSA (Dave Holleman): 1) We sold /50 raffle tickets. That s $395 for our Club which did not quite cover Dave s Club expenses to the Convention. 2) The Doug Forrester Memorial Groomer Award for was awarded to Chuck Best! The plaque reads; Chuck gave his all since the 1970 s and has left his mark in the Tri-Forest area, Mt. Shasta Sno-Mobilers and CNSA. He groomed trails in the winter and marked them in the summer. Chuck loved grooming more than snowmobiling! Everyone who knew him will miss Chuck. Our Memory of you will not be diminished by time. Thank you to all!!! It was voted by members attending the meeting that the plaque be displayed at A&R Power Sports because Chuck spent so much time there and that way everyone could enjoy it. Page 2
3 3) Dave said that the riding in Elko, where the 2000 CNSA Convention was held was great! Riding elevation was between 6 to 10 thousand feet. Dave said it was beautiful over there. Everyone running for office was elected with no problems. CNSA Annual Financial Statement for last year was handed out. Dave said they had several speakers including Blue Ribbon and Pat Davison from People for the USA. The 2001 Convention will be held in Bakersfield. Dave turned in his Club related expense's of 2 nights motel for $100 and mileage of 960 miles at.31 per mile for $297.60, for a total of $ Members attending the meeting voted to pay Dave the $ and a check was given to Dave at the meeting. Safety (Dave Holleman): Dave said he d like to get our Club scheduled for early next season for the CNSA Safety Course. He thought it would be a great idea to get the OR clubs involved too. Public Relations: Eileen has been hearing a lot about different 4-H groups wanted to attend our Club ride with the South Sis-Q 4-H ers. Although none of them have contacted the Club officially, we should look into opening up the ride to all the areas 4-H groups. This would mean changing several things: going to an every-other-year ride with the groups or trying to get even more sleds out there to give more kids rides, or having two or three rides a year for the kids. Medicine Lake Projects: Nothing new, covering in unfinished business. Mercy Air Ambulance (Barbara McPherson): Nothing. Adopt-A-Highway (Eileen): Nothing planned. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Soda Mountain National Monument: Description can be found in last months newsletter. Eileen would like the REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Cont.: Club to vote on whether we take a stand with People for the USA and KARE and if the Club should write their own letter on the issue. Members attending the meeting voted that the Club should stand against any land closures and voted to take a stand with PFUSA and KARE and vote against the Soda Mountain National Monument!
