Well our weather has greatly improved and the patio is now open for the summer. On Saturdays along with the games there will barbeque food available at a very reasonable price so I hope everyone will come to the Wing; bring your friends and enjoy the patio. The Wing also has two regulation-sized horse shoe pits beside the patio, and if anyone would like to play please come and use the pits, and best of all there is no charge for this and your friends are also welcome. There will be no regular Friday lunches during the summer, however there will be a barbeque lunch once a month on a specified Friday, and we hope our regular Friday lunch people, and 404 Wing Members will support this. On July 15th the Annual Veterans Picnic will be held at the Wing from 1:00pm 6:00pm, the host club this year is Branch #50 RCL. This is a great day of fun, games and fellowship, everyone is welcome, tickets are $5.00 each. This is the 10th Anniversary Year of our annual Mayor Dinner and Silent Auction. I encourage our members to come out GENERAL MEETING NOTICE and support this important celebration of veterans and fund raising event for the Wing and for Air Cadets. There is currently a committee reviewing and revising the 404 Wing by-laws and these revised by-laws will be presented to the Wing Membership this fall for input and hopefully approval. There is also a Long Range Planning Committee assessing the Wings future and at the appropriate time this committee will report to the membership on their findings and their recommendations. However this will not be until after we know for certain what the city s plans are for the building. It gives me great pleasure to announce that Carol Totzke has been selected, Member of the Year. Carol has been for several years, and still is a hard working member of the 404 Wing and is very deserving of this recognition. Congratulations Carol and thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the Wing. Pleases consult your calendars in this edition of the Wing Ding for upcoming events over the next three months. I want to wish everyone a very relaxing and enjoyable summer, and I look forward to seeing you at the Wing Per Ardua Ad Astra Upcoming meeting dates June 7th ~ September 6th Meet & Greet 5:00 pm Dinner at 6:00 pm Meeting starts at 7:00 pm Meetings are held the first Thursday of the month. 2 Page 2 Regular Features The Wing Ding Jun/Jul/Aug PADRE S CORNER Dr. Bruce Sweet Hello to all and summer greetings. Here is a summer poem of life and hope and nature. So, enjoy and be well. In Summer Oh, summer has clothed the earth In a cloak from the loom of the sun! And a mantle, too, of the skies soft blue, And a belt where the rivers run. And now for the kiss of the wind, And the touch of the air s soft hands, With the rest from strife and the heat of life, With the freedom of lakes and lands. I envy the farmer s boy Who sings as he follows the plow; While the shining green of the young blades lean To the breezes that cool his brow. He sings to the dewy morn, No thought of another s ear; But the song he sings is a chant for kings And the whole wide world to hear. He sings of the joys of life, Of the pleasures of work and rest, From an o erfull heart, without aim or art; T is a song of the merriest. O ye who toil in the town, And ye who moil in the mart, Hear the artless song, and your faith made strong Shall renew your joy of heart. Oh, poor were the worth of the world If never a song were heard, If the sting of grief had no relief, And never a heart were stirred. So, long as the streams run down, And as long as the robins trill, Let us taunt old Care with a merry air, And sing in the face of ill. Paul Laurence Dunbar, LAST POST Lucille Vlasic passed away on May 3, 2018 in her 89th year. Beloved wife of the late Gerry Vlasic. Lucille was a founding member of the 404 Wing Ladies Auxiliary (est. 1958) and a willing volunteer for many years. Family and friends shared remembrances on May 22nd at Henry Walser funeral home. She will be missed. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we shall remember them.

3 The Wing Ding Jun/Jul/Aug LADIES AUXILIARY Hi Ladies. The Ladies Auxiliary barbeque will be held on June 20th. This year our BBQ will only be open to members of the 404 Wing, spouses and their friends. This event had become too large for the ladies to manage. There was good representation from the remaining Wings in Ontario. The host club from Sarnia did an excellent job of coordinating, as always. Mr. Stephen MacDonnell, National President, RCAFA. And Chairman of the National Executive Council has sent notice as required by the Constitution and By-Laws, that the Regular Features be held at Waterloo Square this year. We hope to see a good group attend from the 404 Wing. I am pleased to see that we have a good slate of officers for the coming year, starting in September. Way to go ladies! This is my last Wing Ding write-up as President. I would like to thank everyone for your support these last two years. This was quite an undertaking as every year we get older. At this time, I would also like to thank the Auxiliary for the lovely civic minded youth in undertaking leadership roles in a great Canada and a better world. The Air Cadet League of Canada s mission is to promote Canadian youth to develop an interest in aviation and aerospace and to provide opportunities to engage in enriching program elements such as physical education, music and public speaking. Since 1941, the Air Cadet League of Canada has supported the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, both financially and through the efforts of our dedicated volunteers, to ensure 2nd Biennial General Meeting of the RCAF Association will be held in Calgary, Alberta, 12 to 14 October 2018, with convention headquarters located at the Hotel Arts. This is an election year; nine elected directorships need to be filled by election. By-laws, resolutions, awards and other administrative functions will be discussed at the business sessions.
