1 SONS IN RETIREMENT Branch #58 We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 11:00am- Lunch is served at 12 noon AUGUST 2015 The Elks Lodge, 2105 So. McDowell Blvd The Board meets at 10:15am Big SIR: Ben Barnes Little SIR: Chuck Wolf Secretary: Jack Schipper Asst. Secretary: Marshall West Treasurer: Joe Augustin Asst. Treasurer: Brian Tolson Directors: Jack Krout Bob Myer Mike Bakalar Gary Haugen Bill Tennyson Newsletter Editor: Al Butler Website Address: branch58.sirinc2.org/ Big SIR Report SIR Ben Barnes July 2015 Little SIR Report SIR Chuck Wolf July 2015 Almost done with the summer, where has the time gone? Vacations, visits to/from family and friends, lazing around, normal everyday chores and errands, grand kids out of school make the time just fly by. The kids will be back in school and traffic and activities will slow down somewhat soon. It has been a great summer. Now we anxiously await the fall and the rain that it will hopefully bring us. Bob Gallo, the speaker from Merrill Lynch at the July meeting, was excellent; please see the recap of his presentation below. It was great to be back and see everyone again. Our branch needs to grow by adding new members to replace those we have lost this year. Please think of anyone you know who might be interested in joining and invite them to lunch. Remember you not only receive a free lunch, but you will have an additional friend to visit with every third Tuesday each month. If you bring in two new members by year end, I will buy you a gift certificate for a one pound box of See s Candy. You have to admit that is a sweet deal. Sue s open heart surgery on July 7 to repair a heart valve was very successful. She came home on Sunday July 12 and is doing extremely well. I even take her around town for our errands. Thank you for sending her your good thoughts and prayers. Julie Thompson Campaign Manager, Team In Training, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Greater Bay Area Chapter will be our guest speaker at the upcoming meeting on the 18 th. Here is the bio she forwarded for our pre-meeting information. My name is Julie Thompson and I am a Campaign Manager for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Our mission at LLS is to find a cure for blood cancer and improve the lives of patients and their families. Our current goal is to increase our presence in the Sonoma County area, helping residents become aware that our local chapter is right in their backyard, and, with several campaigns to participate in, there is a way everyone can get involved in this important fight. I appreciate you giving me an opportunity to speak to your members to let them know about this amazing organization. Please let me know if you need anything further. I have attached a digital logo should you wish to use it in the newsletter. I am looking forward to seeing you all at the August luncheon. May you all have a great summer. Ben Chuck Page 1 Chuck

3 EDITOR S DESK: SIR Al Butler - SEPTEMBER COMPUTER CLASS There was no information provided for an August Class. Information shown below is for September s Class. The September meeting of the Computer and Smartphone Club will be held September 29, 1:30-3:00 PM at the Senior Center. The subject of September s meeting will be "Windows 10: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." Microsoft will soon be dropping support for Windows 7 and Windows 8 is universally detested. Windows 10 is supposed to address these issues, and, at the same time, add some very neat new features. We will explore the pros and cons of Windows 10, and we suggest that you not upgrade until after you have attended this meeting. SIR Mike Burwen, Branch 147 *** PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE *** To those who have no problem walking, we ask that you leave the front parking spaces available for those who have difficulties walking longer distances. Thank you! Will it be you who steps up? I know from experience and by the phone calls and responses I receive, that our members look forward to The Petaluman each month as their go-to source for that information. I hope that you also enjoy your newsletter. Our Branch 58 newsletter conveys important Branch information, including timely notices of upcoming speakers and events, along with other articles of interest and/or humor. But now it s time to have someone step up to help. I am not looking for someone who is a Techie. I m looking to invite someone who has average computer skills, in order to introduce them to just how this process takes shape. It is an interesting, satisfying, and necessary function required for the free flow of information that is shared with our members, and also our other local SIR branches, including SIR statewide. I m certain that there is someone within our Branch 58 who can step up to learn the newsletter operation, and I ask you to do so now. Please contact me to inquire and discuss an overview of what goes on within each monthly cycle. Four to six hours throughout a week is quite realistic once you get the hang of it- That s maybe an hour a day per week (if you need to break away from time to time). I am quite willing to advise and train the right person for as long as it takes. Also, I would be happy staying on, if only to assist in some of the mundane tasks required to get the hardcopy, , and website operations out to our monthly members and others interested. He has had some time away but he was back and looking good. Also, John DeJong was in attendance- sitting at his regular place, and happy to greet us all. I have been in touch with Bill Sovel ( ) and Mike Savage ( ). They are having some health concerns and both could use a call or card. Mike fell and broke his hip and is now in rehabilitation until about the 15 th, so he will be not be at out next meeting. Lets all try to think of some of our fellow Sirs as we read the newsletter and make that call. We all need a friend when we are feeling down. There is another of our members who is having major health problems, Alden Hennings. I was informed he is in serious condition. Those who know him should get a card off to him soon. I will leave you with a quote from Robert Frost: "In three words, I can sum up everything I've learned in life IT GOES ON". Page 4 Len Svinth, The Sunshine Guy

5 NOTABLE HISTORICAL FACTS- AUGUST August 2, Albert Einstein wrote a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt concerning the possibility of atomic weapons. "A single bomb of this type carried by boat and exploded in a port, might very well destroy the whole port together with some of the surrounding territory." Six years later, on August 6, 1945, the first Atomic Bomb, developed by the U.S., was dropped on the Japanese port of Hiroshima. EVENTS AND OTHER NOTES THINGS ARE QUIET AT THIS TIME August 13, British film director Alfred Hitchcock ( ) was born in London. His suspenseful films included classics such as The 39 Steps, Rebecca, Suspicion, Notorious, Rear Window, The Birds, Psycho and Frenzy, in addition to his American TV series Alfred Hitchcock Presents. August 31, American inventor Lee De Forest ( ) was born at Council Bluffs, Iowa. He held hundreds of patents for inventions and was also a pioneer in the creation of wireless radio broadcasting and television. ERNIE PYLE was a Pulitzer Prize winning American journalist, known for his columns for the Scripps-Howard newspaper chain, where he worked as a roving correspondent from 1935 through most of World War II. Before the war he traveled extensively throughout the United States, writing about out-of-the-way towns and their inhabitants in a distinctive, folksy style. After the United States entered World War II he reported from the home front and both the European and Pacific theatres, including actions in North Africa, Europe and the Pacific. He was killed in combat on Iejima during the Battle of Okinawa. At the time of his death his columns were running in more than 300 newspapers, and he was among the best-known American war correspondents. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1944 for his spare, first-person reporting, which highlighted the role and plight of the common "dogface" infantry soldier. "No man in this war has so well told the story of the American fighting man as American fighting men wanted it told," wrote Harry Truman. "He deserves the gratitude of all his countrymen. Page 5 (Info and image gleaned from Wikipedia) DO YOU NEED A RIDE TO THE MEETINGS? We would like all members to know that if you find it difficult to get to a monthly meeting, please give us a call. Fellow members would be quite happy to pick you up and get you back home safely. Just call SIR Len Svinth at : He will put the word out to our members so that you won t miss out at our lively and entertaining luncheons.
