1 A Non-Profit Organization for Retired Men Devoted to the Promotion of Independence and Dignity of Retirement ROOSTER TALES Next meeting - Thursday July 6 th 2017 Oakhurst Country Club If you can t attend, call the hotline Branch 19, summer is certainly upon us. We are halfway through the year, time flies. I want to thank all of the members of our Branch Executive Committee for the great work they have done in service to our branch. Also, many thanks to all of our activity leaders who have coordinated so many enjoyable events for us. They are a terrific bunch of volunteers! Sir Ted Dobbs has stepped up to become our Activities Coordinator replacing Bernie Theobald who had informed us he will be relocating in the near future. Thanks to Bernie for the outstanding effort he has given the branch as both our Publicity Chairman and Activities Coordinator. He will be missed. As you have seen posted on our website, our annual picnic is scheduled at Concord Community Park, Cowell Road on Thursday, September 21. It is always a nice outing for couples or friends. As a part of our picnic we collect a number of donations from our members as raffle prizes. Please let Sir Jack Duncan know if you have items to donate. More information and sign-up sheets will be available on our website and at our August meeting. Signups in August are appreciated so that we can firm up our catering needs. As always, I want to encourage everyone to bring in new members to cover the inevitable attrition that takes place each year. Make it a point to bring a guest as a potential new member in the next few months. Have a great holiday on the Fourth and we will see you at lunch. Jack Barnaba Big Sir Big SlR Message The Program for July Mike Mills SIRS Branch #19 Web Master Mike is our Web Master and is responsible for ensuring that the information for our Rooster Tales newsletter makes its way to the Branch #19 website every month, and if you ve been to the site, you know he does a fantastic job for the Branch. 7 Outings Walking trip to Mare Island on Thursday, 6/15 - the Chapel and the museum. A total of 7 attended a terrific walk last Thursday of the chapel and museum on Mare Island. If you have not done this it is well worth it. The museum is largely open from 10am to 2pm, the chapel on the other-hand is locked so you must take a tour which starts at the museum. Did you know that Louis Comfort Tiffany the son of George Tiffany fabricated 25 of the stained glass windows in the chapel? George Tiffany is the founder of the Tiffany stores with the turquoise blue boxes. Many concrete bunkers scattered around the central part of the island -- left over from war times. The museum has a functioning periscope and lots of models and exhibits of prior times on the island. Check out the website for details After the tour we had a great lunch just over the bridge in Vallejo at a local dive. Good food and good times had by all. 8 Area 2 Activities for July The Area 2 Computer & Technology Group [Formerly A2CAT] Next Meeting on Thursday July 20, 9:30am Walnut Creek Elks Club 1475 Creekside Dr. Walnut Creek Neil Schmidt will be discussing "Traveling with Technology". Do you remember to old days when you carried heavy hardbound books in your suitcase, brought magazines to read on the plane and made calls on payphones? Thanks to technology, times have sure changed. Neil will be presenting ways to use technology to help plan and to assist you in your travels. This discussion will include his favorite travelling apps and techniques and he will encourage others in attendance to contribute their own travelling tips and tricks. We look forward to seeing you around 9:15 AM, Thursday July 20, at the Walnut Creek Elks Lodge, 1475 Creekside Drive. We ask for a donation of $5 to cover the cost of the hall rental, coffee and cookies -- but some months are free, so come and see if our July meeting is another one of those! All SIR members and their guests (spouses included!) are welcome to attend. See you there. Neil Schmidt, Chairman Area 2 Fishing Group The Legends Diablo Creek G.C. Meets on the 4 th Thurs Next Meeting on Thursday July 27, 8:30 am 4050 Port Chicago Highway in Concord. All SIR members and guests are welcome, and indeed encouraged, to participate in fishing trips as well as attend the monthly meetings. Next meeting will be Thursday, July 27th, at the Legend Sports Bar and Grill at the Diablo Creek Golf Course at 4050 Port Chicago Highway in Concord. Meeting starts at 8:30am, come early. June has us split in two: the ocean and bay start to produce; and the piney mountains summon us to their pristine waters. 13 of us led by Chuck Vanoncini went to Lake Almanor where we caught many trout. From the big pond: Brion Beetz and Carl Moyer got rockfish; and Lee Clark got salmon. Ernie Wong had a good early summer with over a hundred shad, Don Mittlesteadt and Carl Moyer also enjoyed that fly fishing. Ernie and Ken Konzak took time out from the big cutthroat at Pyramid lake in Nevada. Ernie released his biggest yet, a 10 pounder. Tom Kostik led a group to Pinecrest Lake where they caught bass and trout. Tom and Mike Corker caught striped and black bass from the delta. Terry Miller, Ron Lew, and Carl Moyer got Halibut from the bay. Karl Droese, Ken Konzak and Joe Miscione traveled to Pyramid Lake NV catching and releasing cutthroat from a charter boat. Thom Watkins, Terry Miller and Carl Moyer ended a bad local trout spring season by catching one small trout at San Pablo Reservoir.
