Letter from Jesse L Schneirla, VA4WDA President VA4WDA, This year we hit our 25 th year. This event has grown from a group of 5 vehicles to a limit of 200 vehicles. This year s event sold out in 3 hours, 56 minutes and 18 seconds. Yes, it s that popular! We have raised over $80,000 throughout the years for VA4WDA to help fight the fight and keep public lands open for our sport. This year s event netted $6,000 being split as follows: $4,000 to VA4WDA, $1,000 to BRC, $500 to United and $500 to the Nelson County Food Pantry. Remember, your registration money pays the bills and the raffle ticket money is where the donations come from. The weather was great for the two days of wheeling, even though Maria gave us a scare. We were keeping our eyes on Hurricane Maria for two weeks prior to the event to make sure we would have good weather to hold the event. We even had a secondary date picked and plans to move the event to another weekend. But we lucked out and the storm passed through to the west of Oak Ridge and we had great weather. It seems that everyone had two fun filled days of wheeling even though there was a fair share of breakage. But, It s only Oak Ridge! Looking at all the pictures posted on Facebook pages it looks to me that all obstacles were concurred, by some and many wheeling techniques were shared. As vehicles came back to the campsite you could tell who went through Z- Ditch as they had red mud half way up their grill. But the smiles and the stories told it all. We were pleased to have Randy Block from BRC come and talk to the membership of VA4WDA on what BRC is doing for our sport. And he has confirmed attendance for next year s event. This way we can get him into an empty seat to see how Virginians wheel. While at the event VA4WDA donated $1,000 to BRC and Tidewater followed with a check for $1,000 from the proceeds of the event. We also had Jamie and Kate Beadle from NCBBA speak to the membership on the status of the new Bonner Bridge, ramp access and all news related to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Plus, the members of VA4WDA donated over 1200 lbs. of food to the Nelson County Food Pantry. Laura Stone and Steve Hendricks from Rock Ridge Off-road won the competition with Tom Lassen of Tidewater coming in second. Then VA4WDA and Tidewater Fourwheelers followed that with a donation of $500 each. Marian Dixon, Nelson County Food Pantry Vice President was there, and she was overwhelmed with the support the VA4WDA family gave to their organization. Job well done to all! It seemed that the raffle lasted for ever and we would never run out of raffle prizes to give away. Well that was the case as we have great sponsorship with many businesses. We started receiving donations for the raffle in January and received the last one the day before the event. We can t do this without our sponsor and in your drivers, packet there was a list of those sponsors and I would only ask that you think of them first when purchasing parts or accessories for your rig. Take care of those that take care of you. Next up is year 26! September 2018.
Letter from Gerald Hall, VA4WDA Member-at-Large Just a reminder to everyone to drive safely. My niece was killed in a single car accident a couple of weeks ago. She was only 18 years old and had just graduated high school. While driving home from her boyfriend s house, she fell asleep and ran off an embankment and hit a tree. Sadly she was less than three miles from home. I know this has nothing to do with wheeling, but how many times have we left work to travel at night to get to wheeling destination? Or left after a long day of wheeling to get home? I know I ve driven while I was exhausted many times. So please be safe out there and don t drink and drive or drive tired. Thanks for your attention. Letter from Sandy Schneirla, VA4WDA Vice President With hunting season upon us, let s remember some safety and respect. Comply with all signs and barriers. Never hunt solo, but if you must, leave your plan with family in case of an accident. Be considerate of others on the trail. Never take a shot unless you see the animal clearly. Don t shoot across trails. Leave gates as you found them. Ask permission before crossing private property. Always yield to horses. Know the hunting requirements for your area. Know the season, dates, and bag limits. Pack an emergency backpack. Dress in layers. I wish you much luck this hunting season!
Middle Peninsula Jeep Association Inc. News Hello from Middle Peninsula Jeep Association Inc. (MPJAI). We have had an eventful couple of months. It started on August 5 th when MPJAI was invited to support the 1st Annual Soapbox Derby Race sponsored by Downtown Hampton Development Partnership (DHDP). Our 12 participating Jeeps and 16 club members were used to aid soapbox racers by towing their race cars to the starting line on Settler s Landing Road at the top of the Booker T. Washington Bridge. MPJAI, coordinated by club Secretary Andy Pilar, was happy to make DHDP s first ever soapbox derby a huge success. One week later, club members were on Bald Mountain camping and wheeling. It was a small group of only 2 Jeeps and 3 members, but they had a blast. The group was once again led by club Secretary Andy Pilar who, under a new club initiative, found and named the fourth club camp site which forevermore will be known as AP z HILL FORT. The following week, MPJAI had an outstanding showing in support of Goin Coastal s Jeep Show. We had 16 Jeeps and 32 members show up to support the GC s fund raiser for CHKD. With the 25th Annual VA4WDA Trail Ride kicking off on September 15 th, many new members of our club and several veteran Jeepers were able to join in on the festivities and get in some interesting wheeling (not to mention great raffle prizes). MPJAI boasted an impressive 13 Jeeps and 20 members at Oak Ridge. The weekend of September 23 rd and 24 th found MPJAI involved in the 2017 Hampton Cup Regatta. Six of our Jeeps and associated club members provided towing services for the various racing boats. Cranes raised and lowered the boats from trailers which our Jeeps towed to the water drop off point. This race was held at Fort Monroe with many speed boats in attendance. MPJAI again made it happen with its Jeep support. Next, we had ten Jeeps with 12 members roll down to Carova Beach in support of Tidewater Bronco s Beach Clean-up, sponsored by VA4WDA. This was a good community event that allows four wheel drive off-roaders to come together and help maintain the cleanliness of the shoreline. On October 12 th through 15 th we headed out again to Big Levels for some top notch wheeling. The 13 Jeeps and 22 members also had an opportunity to travel the Blue Ridge Parkway stopping at several overlooks to see the beautiful autumn colors across the mountain range. Next was MPJAI s 5 th Annual Halloween Camp-out held at Newport News Campground October. This event was coordinated by our very own Crypt Bus Boy Warren and Crypt Mistress Tabatha (aided by her zombie slaves Doug and Nick). It was a weekend of fun and games shared by great members in stunningly decorated camp sites. The 35 members, driving 13 Jeeps, cooked up an amazing menu of great Halloween eats like: Slab of BBQ Road Kill Beef, cauldron smoked in place; maggot tenderized Mummydogs; Cubed Roadkill Possum Guts in Bloody Marinade; squirrel brains in a cream sauce served with chips for dipping; Spicy Browned Zombie Liver with Maggots as a side; various cooked body parts; and other road kill. Then for dessert we topped it off with delectable like Bear-Scat Butt cake; pan of Kitty Litter; and Bloody-Messy Desert. Yummmm yum, can t wait till next year. MPJAI finished the month of October with several members supporting the Bluebird Gap Farm Fall Festival in Hampton where they coordinated the shuttle bus service for attendees. As you can see, MPJAI keeps busy with lots of fun-filled events and community service and we re welcoming new Jeep 4X4 members almost every month. Come visit us if you are able and if not, hopefully we ll see you on the trail! Charles Sikes, 2017 MPJAI President

Capital City Fourwheelers News On October 21 st and 22 nd, the Capital City Four Wheel Drive club held its 32 nd Annual Surf Fishing Tournament on the Outer Banks of NC. The weather was perfect all weekend making for a great tournament. Six hundred and eight entrants fished from the beach for a variety of species. Fish were caught in all of the categories and the winning prize money and plaques were presented at Sunday s weigh-in and door prize drawing held at the Fessden Center in Buxton, NC. During the tournament, raffle tickets were sold to win two custom casting rods, both fitted with Siegler reels which were donated by Wes Siegler of Siegler Reels. Each of these combos were worth in the $1,000 range. The raffle raised $4,160, to be split evenly between the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation and the Methodist Men's Food Bank. Additional donations from the proceeds of the tournament will be made by the club prior to year s end. The club would like to thank Dennis Conroy, Mickey Kelliher, Heather Vaughan an all of the other members who pulled together to make it a successful weekend. In addition, we want to thank the Virginia Four Wheel Drive Association for their generous door prize donations and President/VP Jesse and Sandy Schneirla for their attendance. Frank Overbey, CCFW
Business Member Spotlight Greetings once again from Overland Experts (OEX)! We were really happy to be involved in the 25 th Annual Trail Ride for the very first time. What a great group of folks. We will make it to more events in Virginia next year, guaranteed! The group Ted rode and drove with on Friday and Saturday of the ATR was great. The experience level was, on average, pretty high and it showed. He really has nothing but good things to say about the safe and fun comradery of the weekend. Dustin and John were the guides for the day and they rocked it. We want to stress the value of proper practices when off-roading and how training can help people learn these practices. Good training is important to keeping folks safe. We want to reach out to new four-wheelers and anybody who trains new four-wheelers. Let s keep a high standard for responsible and safe off-roading. For the raffle, we gave away a day of training with us for the winner and their vehicle plus a friend of the winner and their vehicle also. Please feel free to contact Ted Dinwiddie, our lead instructor in Virginia and set up a day. We can emphasize any aspect of 4 wheeling you wish and really want to get the word out there about what we do. The contact number is on the certificate. See you on the trails! OEX VA, P.O. Box 83, Orange, VA Ted Dinwiddie, Lead Instructor ted@overlandexperts.com
