VICTORIA S VOCALITY Dear Rotarians and Friends of Rotary, So first meeting as emotional as changeover! That moment of using the microphone for the first time standing in front of everyone, let s just say being nervous was an understatement! I even had to ask Duncan. so what do I say when I turn on the microphone? To which he responded, just say hello and welcome Rotarians! Between Duncan and Steve who held my hand and guided me through that meeting, I made it to the over side only half scarred. It was a great evening and certainly one I will remember for those reasons! We had a good engaging open forum where ideas and opinions flowed easily. Some good pointers were made that the board will take on and consider. I thank everyone that participated that night for their open honesty, interaction and constructive criticism regarding many had differing opinions- this will just help the club get stronger and better. My previous hub submission mentioned that I was sitting on a Sunday morning writing the blog which got me in trouble as I should ve been out cleaning up the graffiti with the team. So just for you Adrian I m sitting here on a Thursday morning at work sipping my double shot skim cappuccino extra hot with extra chocolate only half full coffee composing this blog. Have a wonderful week everyone! Victoria BBQ HELP NEEDED Ryde Council have asked us to cater for a BBQ for a multicultural event on Saturday 25th July starting at am. 5 GRAFFITI REMOVAL IN JULY 5 NEWS FROM FRANCE : ROSE JENKINS ON EUROTOUR Keep up with Rose on exchange at

Days NEWS FROM FRANCE : ROSE JENKINS ON YOUTH EXCHANGE 6 So my Friday began slowly as I needed a good long rest after our travels. I spent the day lounging around, but then in the afternoon when Laurence came home from work, she asked if I wanted to go to Paris for the weekend and stay with her sister! Yay! So all of a sudden I was chucking things into a backpack and we drove out to the gare. It was a two hour or so train ride, and we were picked up out the front of the gare in Paris by Valerie. She drove us back to her apartment, pointing out things as we went. There is a certain something about Paris that just seems to be the essence of France. I know it seems stereotypical but to arrive in Paris felt like some kind of milestone in my year in France. Nothing quite equates to turning a corner and seeing the Eiffel Tower stretched up into the sky. We arrived at the 3rd floor apartment and met Valerie s husband, and the fat grey cat Pinochet. Then we went just downstairs and out to an Italian restaurant down the road for dinner. That was all for my first day (or, like, quarter-day) in Paris. Saturday kicked off fairly early; we wanted to make the most of our time. It was suggested that we hire bikes as our mode of transport for the day, as Valerie generally tends to get around by bike a lot anyway. I was super excited, because, I mean, bike riding around the streets of Paris?! It doesn t get any more French than that! However my excitement was quickly replaced by SHEER AND UTTER TERROR. Maybe I should have seen that coming. The road traffic in Paris is fierce. So there we were, three tiny humans on spindly skeletons of metal and rubber, trying to manoeuvre our way around the giantess of a thousand angry cars. And yes, I say angry, because it felt like every single driver in Paris was in the middle of a heated argument with the world around them. I got honked at a few times and nearly run over a few more. But hey, Paris, right?! We made it to our first point of interest without major drama: the Louis Vuitton Foundation. Now, I know what you re thinking, and no, this was not a place to buy expensive handbags. It was actually a new modern art museum, set up by the million/billion/whatever/aire who owns the Louis Vuitton brand. It s a very modern building architecture-wise, kind of evoking a similar style to that of the Sydney Opera House actually. It was pretty on the outside, but the inside was actually a little weird. I ve never been one to understand modern art. I mean, some of this stuff was reeeeeeally strange. Some of it was cool though. The best part was the exhibition downstairs of actual well-known art. There were Picassos and Monets and that painting of the guy on a bridge screaming. I think it s called The Scream? Obviously I m not an art person. Anyway.

NEWS FROM FRANCE : ROSE JENKINS ON YOUTH EXCHANGE 7 Our ticket to the foundation also gave us access to the Jardin d Acclimation, which was just a massive park with all sorts of things inside. A concert space, a little bird-zoo (I know there s a word for a bird-zoo but I can t think of it), a section with theme park rides, a river with paddle-boats you can go in, the list goes on. We just wandered around and bought a sandwich for lunch here. Then we made our way back to the bikes. I was a little more hesitant on my second ride of the bike, but it went basically the same. Almost got run over multiple times but survived and made it to our next stop intact. Our next stop was a choice of mine, I wanted to see the Palace Opera Garnier. We arrived and booked tickets for a tour in half an hour, and while we waited we wandered down a very expensive street to Place Vendome. This was home to everything from Chanel to the actual Louis Vuitton shop. We didn t enter any of them of course. It was then time to go back to the Opera building for our tour. The group was all given a little earpiece thing which connected to our guide s microphone, so I could hear nice and clearly. This made understanding her French fairly easy, and I didn t have much problem with that at all. The whole thing was amazing. I could sit here and talk about it for an hour. I just have an obsession with theatres. To sum it up I guess there was so much embellishment on everything and it was just beautiful. After the tour, we were calling it a day. I think Laurence and I had had enough of cobblestoned streets and honking horns, so we opted for the tram home rather than the bikes. We picked up some Lebanese takeaway food for dinner on the way. Sunday was our last day in Paris. We took the car instead of the bikes. We started off at some street markets, which were fun to wander around in. Then we went to Notre Dame, which I had seen from a distance but never actually been in. We drove down the Champs-Elysees on the way and stopped to take some photos of the Arc de Triomphe. Notre Dame was ridiculously busy (as always, I

NEWS FROM FRANCE : ROSE JENKINS ON YOUTH EXCHANGE 8 think), and we just went in and walked around and came out really. Afterwards we went to a nice little bistro for lunch. I had the most delicious ceaser salad ever and the staff were very fun and friendly. We then went to this famous ice-creamery called Berthillon and I got salted caramel and it was delicious. We wandered the streets happily for a while, along the river Seine, and looked in the old Hotel Dieu hospital. Then we went over to visit a church called Saint Chapelle. It was originally built to house the relics of the Passion of Christ, although they now live in the Notre Dame treasury. Anyway, we went into this place, and I looked around and thought, ok, this is pretty, the walls were painted and more colourful than most old churches. Then we went upstairs. We literally gasped, as did about every person before and after us walking up the stairs. The second floor was home to the most beautiful stained glass windows I ve ever seen. They seemed to stretch up impossibly high and flooded the room with the most vibrant of colours. I was in awe. I m not sure whether we just had good luck with the sun streaming in, but I am sure it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my life.

NEWS FROM FRANCE : ROSE JENKINS ON YOUTH EXCHANGE 9 After that it was getting close to time to leave. We went for a wander through some markets, there was a flower market, and oddly enough, a bird market. There were a bunch of birds, like budgies and chickens and everything, being sold. Crazy. Then we drove past the Eiffel Tower on our way back to the train station. We hadn t made a visit of the tower because I d already climbed it once before and I think I ll see it again on my Rotary Eurotour. So the plan was to just drive past and give it a glance. Funnily enough, we ended up driving directly past the Australian Embassy, which had a giant picture of a kangaroo and an Australian flag, all set up with the Eiffel Tower in the background. It was as if it had been organised perfectly for a photo. So I had to take a few snaps. Then, finally, we were dropped off at the gare and took the train back to Nantes. And so, that was my trip to Paris. Days Monday I had nothing much to do, and I had been wanting to make a meal for my host family, so I took myself out to the shops and bought what I needed to make a shepherd s pie. I know it s an English dish, but then, Australia doesn t really have any main dishes of its own unless you count a bbq, but that s a little hard to pull off in France. So, as I explained to my host family, we tend to eat a wide range of multicultural dishes, food from all the other countries, and as such I was just making a meal that I might eat on any given day at home. And I just really like shepherd s pie. Everyone was a fan, or at least the entire thing was finished and they said it was nice. I doubt anyone would say otherwise to someone who had made an effort to cook for them, but they seemed to genuinely enjoy it, so that s good. That evening I also got a call from my counsellor who said he was going out on his boat tomorrow with Lucien and Giovana and a friend of hers. There was one more spot on the boat. So I ended up going over to his house after dinner, and slept over with Giovana. Then the next morning it was up early to head out to the Gulf of Morbihan, about a 2 hour drive. We set up the boat which had been trailered behind the car. This was a long and complicated process I didn t know anything about, but anyway eventually we were all piled in and we took off. It was super fun, when we made it out a little from where we

NEWS FROM FRANCE : ROSE JENKINS ON YOUTH EXCHANGE 10 left off, and we could go really fast, over little choppy waves that bumped us around. We were each even allowed to steer for a little bit of the way. Eventually we pulled in to a beach on a small island and climbed out with our esky of lunch. After sandwiches, an amazing Brazilian chicken tart thing, apple cake, magic tricks and a few rounds of the cup song, we laid out towels and stretched out in bikinis to enjoy some of the first actual rays of warm sun in forever. Eventually someone unearthed a paddleball set and we started up a game, impeded a little by the discomfort of the beach being made up of more rocks and pebbles than sand. Finally, we made a resolution to go and get wet. I m talking 15 degree water on a 20-something degree day. We started in up to our ankles, already squealing. From there it was just a step-by-step process of squeals that grew louder and more agonising. It took an awfully long time to reach a distance that even got us to hip-depth. So from there, we just dunked down to our shoulders. Having reached our goal, we practically sprinted out, but ended up starting a splashing war on the way. Fun but excruciating. Finally we got back in the boat and made our way back to the car. Packing it all up was just as complicated and confusing. Then there was a 2 hour car ride home. I had been invited to go into town with Giovana for the night, but we kind of got stood up and rather than waiting a few hours for everyone, we just went back home. It was nice to just spend some time talking together. Finally we went up to bed. Wednesday was a lazy morning, we watched a movie. In the afternoon we went out to buy a few ingredients for dessert Giovana was making. It was essentially just condensed milk, butter, and cocoa. Yep. It was so delicious. Then I got dropped off back home.
