1 Social Time 9:00 Meeting starts at 9: October2013 Welcoming new members to the Greater 285 Corridor through social & civic activities Volume 25 1#7 There are no strangers here, only friends who haven t met. President's Message Do you, like I, refuse to acknowledge the summer is winding down? As temperature drops every mid-september the following exchange occurs in my household: "I'm going to turn the heat on", says my husband. "Absolutely not, it's still summer!" I answer with a deep conviction. That goes back and forth for days. In the meantime to get warm I drink lots of hot tea which, of course, results in often going to a bathroom. And while I'm there I deploy another tactic to keep warm: I use a hair dryer... on my icicle feet. Over the years I've perfected the routine - take the slippers off, take the socks off, turn the hair-dryer on high and blow the hot air on my feet, then into my socks, then into my slippers, then the last blow on my feet as they are cold again and quickly put the socks and slippers back on. Balmy...for about 30 minutes, after which I go over the whole thing again. All that, but still a flat-out NO to heating the house because it's still summer! After several days like that I wake up in the morning dreading to get up to a cold house when I realize it's warm! I'm really thankful, but pretending otherwise, for my spouse's decision to go against my wishes to prolong the summer. By the time you read this we'll have all acknowledged the summer s over. The days might be colder, but with Aspens turning color there is another opportunity for enjoying our beautiful mountains. Speaking of enjoyment please come to the October meeting to chat with your colleagues and friends (my favorite part of the meeting) over coffee, tea and snacks provided by the Hospitality Committee. Some of our colleagues wish to retire from leading special interest groups or committees. Barbara Voth of the Wednesday Hiking Group has provided thoughtful planning and led us on some of the most spectacular trails these last two years. Randi Brattin of the Pedal Pushers Group has raced ahead of the CN&N peloton for many years and will gladly help the new person to "hop on the bike" and lead the group. Thank you Barbara and Randi! Theresa Garin, our Historian, has been thinking of transferring her role, but as we all appreciate her work and admire the CN&N annual scrapbooks we hope she'd reconsider. The Holiday Boutique is to be held on the 2 nd of November and the preparations have already begun. This is THE EVENT for our organization, so please consider participating. No matter what you contribute your efforts to (baking, bake sale, cash, credit, wrapping, advertising, greeters, runners...) you'll help making the Boutique a success and have fun doing it! At the meeting chairpersons of various Boutique functions will have sign-up sheets for you. Refreshments CN&N Hospitality Please remember to bring your own coffee cup. You do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. (James 4:13) Sharon Sears, who had been elected to be the CN&N President, died of a cancer on August 27, Her sudden death has left us stunned and saddened. Sharon was very involved in activities of our organization: a member of bridge, garden, touring lunch bunch and gourmet lunch groups. She was also the chairperson of a very successful Holiday Boutique in Sharon s many friends remember her as a friendly, spirited and caring person. I d like to share with you fragments of memories of Sharon contributed by Her CN&N friends: Sharon was supportive when I had cancer, helped start the bridge group, was a slow walker with me at the Crested Butte trips and a very good friend. I have a newspaper clipping that Sharon handed me when I saw her last. It tells of a new exhibit at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum in Golden she thought would be a great Touring Lunch Bunch trip. It has been lying on my desk since she gave it to me and I will keep it there, for a while, to remind me of Sharon and how much she enriched my life. Sharon was always my roommate at Crested Butte, since we were both "snorers", we always teased each other about who could snore the loudest!! I miss her terribly! Tap dancing through life with a beautiful smile & friendly demeanor! Sharon had the ability to laugh at herself in awkward situations & yet always maintained her elegance. She was a picky eater, a reluctant hiker & a dear friend who will be missed by all who knew and loved her! On Saturday, September 7 th several of Sharon s friends and colleagues from the CN&N attended Memorial Services held in her memory. We gave donations collected at the September meeting to Sharon s husband, Jerry. The donations will help with building the stone bench that the family wants to dedicate to Sharon in one of the open spaces. Also, as we decided at the September meeting the Coins-for-Causes donations collected throughout the year will be given in Sharon s memory to an organization that we ll choose at the later time. We will very much miss Sharon, but I believe that with her down-to-earth attitude Sharon wouldn t have liked us to grieve for too long, but to go ahead with enjoying our lives and friendships as much as she d had when she was with us. Let us remember her fondly. With Sharon s untimely death I assume the duties of the CN&N President. I'll do my best to fulfill that role to your satisfaction and with your help we ll continue making CN&N the friendly place for old and new members. Regards, Alicja Stanczak

6 2013 Holiday Boutique Taking Shape With the arrival of the fall season, members of CN&N s annual Holiday Boutique organizing committees are moving from the planning into the action phase. Exciting news is that we will have the maximum number of vendors that the high school space will allow, according to Joanne Gregory, Chair of this year s Artisan Committee. We are full up, she added. Earlier this summer, Joanne s committee members evaluated over 110 applications, reviewed each for the quality and type of products sold and price range. In addition, they worked to select a good balance of past and first-time vendors to ensure the Boutique remains fresh and of interest to our customers. Through this jury process, Joanne s committee selected 78 different vendors, offering a full range of unique arts and craft items from pottery, woodworking, jewelry, quilts, etc. As per the Boutique policy, only items hand crafted by the vendors themselves will be sold with no prefabricated objects allowed. This restriction adds to the prestige of the show and sets it apart from many other area holiday fairs. In addition, it is a testimony to the Boutique s reputation for quality products and efficient operation, built over the 36 previous years, that so many area and out-of-state vendors apply for an opportunity to be at the show. At the same time, Debbie Grisham and Randi Battin are working in tandem organizing the Bake Sale. They want and need all members to...start your ovens. Whether you are a baker or not or whether you are volunteering to work in another capacity for the Boutique, your contribution to the Bake Sale is critical. We generally never have enough pies, cookies, squares or brownies to meet demand. The more tempting goodies we have available to sell, the more money to the CN&N bottom line. If you can t or don t have the time to bake yourself, a contribution of $20 or more will help defray overhead costs. Remember, the CN&N earns only 10% of vendor sale revenues, but 100% of monies earned by the Bake Sale accrue to us. Finally, the success of the Boutique as always rests on the hard work and full participation of CN&N s amazing members. If you have not already volunteered to work with one, or two, or three different committees, please be sure to do so, NOW! The names and contact information of all Boutique committee chairs are printed elsewhere in this newsletter. Each chair or co-chair would be pleased to answer any questions and add your name to a volunteer lists. Working together we can make the 2013 CN&N Holiday Boutique a fun and worthwhile event for all CN&N Holiday Boutique Committee List
