2 OVERVIEW Prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, Charleston, South Carolina, was one of the most prosperous cities in America. The production and export of crops such as rice, indigo and cotton allowed Charleston s merchants and planters to amass immense fortunes. The affluence among Charleston s residents permitted them to build grand houses endowed with the finest furniture, silver, glass and ceramics. Consequently, the seaport became a haven for European and American craftsmen who produced extraordinary works of fine and decorative art. This tour will focus on important Charleston houses and collections, both in public and private hands, that tell the story of this sophisticated and genteel Southern seaport. The trip begins with an introduction to plantation life at Middleton Place and Drayton Hall in the effort to explain the lifeblood of the southern economy that shaped early Colonial and Antebellum culture in the South. The first day will begin at Middleton Place, which has America s earliest landscaped gardens, and finish at Drayton Hall, the oldest unrestored plantation house in America. After exploring both plantations, we will head to the heart of Charleston s historic district, for two nights at the luxurious Planters Inn, a Relais & Chateaux hotel. The remaining two days will be filled with walking tours of historic Charleston, private tours of collectors homes, behind-the-scenes tours with curators at the Gibbes and Charleston Museums and a boat trip to Fort Sumter. The group will have the opportunity to enjoy some of the city s premier restaurants, and dine by candlelight at a private home overlooking the Charleston Harbor. Throughout the Charleston trip, we will benefit from the knowledge and insight of Alyce Englund, who recently curated the acclaimed exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Colts & Quilts: The Civil War Remembered. Additional tours with local historians, curators and collectors promise to enchant the group and give a diverse perspective on the arts and culture of Charleston. We hope you join us!

3 WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14 HARTFORD / CHARLESTON Tour participants depart from Bradley International Airport on either of the group-designated flights (to be booked on your own): 10:05 a.m. US Airways Express via Charlotte, arriving at 1:55 p.m. 10:03 a.m. United Express via Charlotte, arriving at 2:03 p.m. Upon arrival at Charleston Airport, we will board a private coach. Those arriving on non-group designated flights will be responsible for their own transfers. En route to Middleton Place, we will stop for a guided tour at the H.L. Hunley, a Confederate submarine that is at the center of one of the most fascinating underwater archaeological excavations in North America. The Hunley is best known for torpedoing the Navy sloop, USS Housatonic in 1864, in the first successful submarine attack on a warship. We will have a late afternoon check-in at The Inn at Middleton Place, whose 55 rooms are secluded among groves of tall pines and oaks. The Inn is a short stroll from Middleton Place, a National Historic Landmark, consisting of a carefully preserved 18th-century plantation and 65 acres of landscaped gardens. This evening enjoy a welcome reception at Middleton Place including a brief talk on Charleston s history, culture and art by Alyce Englund, followed by a Low Country Boil and Oyster Roast. Overnight: Inn at Middleton Place THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15 MIDDLETON PLACE / DRAYTON HALL On Thursday, we will spend the morning on a grand tour of Middleton Place with senior museum staff. We will begin in the classic Frenchinspired gardens, designed in 1741 by Henry Middleton, plantation owner and President of the First Continental Congress. Next, we will proceed to the plantation house for a closer look at the Middleton family s life and role in the West Indies trade. For perspective, we will tour the stable yards, where craftspeople recreate the activities of a selfsustaining plantation. Following a lunch buffet at Middleton Place, we will visit nearby Drayton Hall, the last surviving rice plantation on the Ashley River. Built in 1738, Drayton Hall is the oldest unrestored plantation house in America, and one of the most important examples of Georgian-Palladian architecture in the country. Though unfurnished, its architectural legacy showcases three centuries of American history which we will learn about on a guided tour augmented with photos, drawings, and a watercolor from the 1700s. Thursday evening, we will receive an introduction to Charleston by Ruth Miller, a local historian and our guide for the next two days, over cocktails and delicious hors d oeuvres. Dinner will follow in the Cypress Room at Middleton Place, featuring traditional Low Country plantation fare. Overnight: Inn at Middleton Place

4 FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16 CHARLESTON On Friday, Ruth Miller will lead an architectural walking tour of Charleston. We will begin at the handsome, neoclassical City Hall, designed in 1801 by Charlestonian Gabriel Manigault, a gentleman architect credited with introducing the Adamesque style to the city. City Hall s painting gallery memorializes famous visitors and painters from Charleston s illustrious past, including a portrait of George Washington by Connecticut s own, John Trumbull and a portrait of President James Monroe by Samuel F. B. Morse. Next, the group will visit the Heyward- Washington House, built in 1772 for Thomas Heyward, Jr., a Revolutionary patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence, which features magnificent Charleston-made furniture and a formal 18thcentury garden. Our last stop will be the Nathaniel Russell House, a grand Federal mansion completed in 1808 for a wealthy Charleston merchant. The gracefully restored interior boasts elaborate neoclassical plasterwork and a magnificent self-supporting elliptical staircase, as well as period antiques. After lunch, Sara Arnold, Curator of Collections at the Gibbes Museum of Art will give the group a special tour of the outstanding collection of American paintings, including Carolina portraits of the 18th and 19th centuries, and collection of miniatures painted on ivory. Just behind the Gibbes is The Charleston Library Society, founded in 1748 and an architectural gem, where the group will view rare historic and archival collections from Charleston s past. Friday evening, we will stay at the Planters Inn, a Relais & Chateaux hotel located in the historic district and across from the Old City Market. The night s entertainment will include a reception at the private Rivers Collection of furniture, silver, and fine arts from Charleston s golden era of craftsmanship in the colonial period and beyond. Dinner is at your leisure. A list of suggested restaurants will be provided in advance. Overnight: Planters Inn SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17 CHARLESTON All aboard for a morning cruise to Fort Sumter to see where the Civil War began. On a tour of the fort, Alyce Englund will describe the growing discord between North and South that erupted on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery opened fire on this Federal fort. Following the harbor cruise, we will visit the Joseph Manigault House, an exceptional example of neoclassical architecture that reflects the lifestyle of a wealthy, rice-planting family and the slaves who lived there. Many of the rooms have been restored to their original (and often unexpected)

5 color schemes and house an outstanding collection of American, English and French pieces of the early 19th century. Lunch will take place nearby at 39 rue de Jean Restaurant. After lunch, we will visit the Charleston Museum for a tour led by curator Grahame Long through the celebrated Low Country Collections and Loblein Gallery of Silver. Founded in 1773, the Charleston Museum houses outstanding collections of decorative arts, including furniture, silver, Chinese exports, and ceramics. For the balance of the afternoon, the group is free to stroll through Charleston s City Market and explore the stalls filled with folk art, sweet grass baskets, local food, and other goods. Our last hurrah and celebratory dinner will be hosted at the Edmonston Alston House, a beautiful mansion on Charleston s High Battery overlooking the harbor and Fort Sumter. Built in 1825, the house contains Alston family furniture, silver, books and paintings. We will begin with an indepth tour of the house followed by cocktails and hors d oeuvres on the second floor piazza. A candlelit dinner will follow on the covered terrace. Overnight: Planters Inn SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18 CHARLESTON / HARTFORD Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before ending our tour on a high note with a visit to the acclaimed Roper House, a private home and collection owned by New York investment banker Richard H. Jenrette. Built in 1838 on the recently completed High Battery, it is filled with classicallyinspired Empire furniture and fine art. The group will proceed to the airport and check-in for the flight home. A bag lunch will be provided.
