1 THE TUCSON BRITISH CAR REGISTER November 2017 Volume 23, Number 11 Articles, opinions, suggestions and items offered for sale printed in the Register are solely those of the authors or offerors and do not reflect the official policy or warranty of TBCR, its officers or members unless duly noted. Technical tips are for informational purposes only. Inside Drive Time On the Road Board News Events Monterey Healey Week For Sale Drive Time by Pete Williams November is an important month for our Club. I ll try to touch on a few of the reasons for this statement. October swelled the club s ranks, but the months starting with November bring even more snow-birds back. The Tuesday coffee events have swelled as well. It s been standing room only. It s great to have everyone back! The October 21 st Gregory School Car Show was another big success. From what I saw, there were probably about 20 British Cars and several of our members in attendance. They sold out the show about a month prior to the event. There was a 40 car waiting list. Several of us met at the River Center (Craycroft and River Rd) just north of the school which allowed us to enter together. Most of us were in the Y British class. The weather was perfect and the show field was lush and not all dried out. November 1 st: We are doing a BLAT to Mt Lemon for Lunch. Check your for the tour the directions and the map. November 25 th : The Hot Dog Run is an important event for the TBCR. It s an event that starts with a nice tour and ends with hot dogs and refreshments for club members. At the end of the meal, when we are all gathered together, members are elected to board positions. Details on page 4. December 10th is the Holiday Party see details on page 4. November usually has much more moderate temperatures. It is our hope that with the cooler weather there will be a higher participation in our tours. The very hot summer weather reduced the tours to single number participants. It s more fun with more folks on the tours. It s been interesting unleashing the tours from a-far. It s nice to get tour feedback. Thanks to everyone who participated and came out for the tours and meals. I look forward to new venues and exciting tours coming up in the new year Dues You can pay your $35 TBCR dues at the November 25 Hotdog Run or the December 10 Holiday Party, or you can mail your check to: TBCR PO Box Tucson, AZ Please be sure to note your name and if you like, the name of your spouse/significant other.

5 Page 5 of 8 The Register Monterey International Healey Week by Michael Kaiserman The Golden Gate Chapter of the Austin Healey Club USA played host to the Monterey International Healey Week, September 11-15, 2017, which was situated at the Hyatt Regency across from the Naval Post Graduate School in picturesque Monterey, CA. The event was held to celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of the end of production of the Big Healey. As the original owner of a 1967 BJ MK III, I could not resist the opportunity to go up to Monterey and join in on the celebration. I called Steve Meyer, who has a pristine BN7 MK I that he has put a lot of effort into. Steve jumped at the opportunity to join my wife, Robin Sue, and I for the trip up north. So we both trailered our cars up to Carmel, CA, on Sunday at start of that week where we each had reserved accommodations. Monday was registration day which gave us an opportunity to see lots of cars that had arrived early and were still arriving at the Hyatt and to meet some really charming people from all over the world. We took the opportunity with the nice weather, which lasted all week, to drive part of the famous 17-Mile Drive along Pebble Beach after we dropped in for lunch at the Pebble Beach Golf Club. The security there had both Steve and I park our cars right in front of the main building which obviously attracted a lot of people to come by for a chat and some pictures. We continued our drive along the shoreline after a bite to eat and then headed back to the Hyatt to view the items up for bid in the silent auction and pay our respects briefly at the opening reception. With over 200 registrants, people came from as far away as Australia, Japan, Germany, England, and several of the Canadian Provinces. Everyone had to hand it to the Aussies as they shipped 12 cars over not only for event, but to drive all over the Pacific Northwest from Canada on down to the Monterey Peninsula. Pacific Grove blocked off five blocks in the middle of town for displaying all 184 cars on Tuesday from the morning into the mid-afternoon time. There was every class of Healeys from a Nash Healey to several 100Ms, tri-carbs, sprites, modified Healeys, single light 3000s, hardtops and Jensen Healeys, not to mention the largest group of BJ8 s I have ever seen in one setting. Even the last Healey made was on display and for sale as were several unique cars configured for competition.

6 The Register Page 6 of 8 Later that afternoon, a caravan of 154 cars drove out to Laguna Seca as everyone who wanted to participate were allowed to drive several laps around that famous raceway in groups of approximately 35 to 40 cars at a time. As Steve commented, it was a very cool, cool experience, which he recorded with his new GoPro. In fact, Steve got the thrill to drive the circuit a second time later that day. We did our best to let it all out, but I do not think anyone got over 70 mph and one needed to be careful coming out of the downhill S-curves at the top of the hill as we were not allowed to pass anyone or follow too close to the car in front at any point on the raceway.

7 Page 7 of 8 The Register On Wednesday there was a Funkhana which challenged a driver and passenger to navigate a bunch of cones in the parking lot of the hotel and make some designated stops to do some crazy things, all trying to do the course in the fastest time. We both gave it our best but to no avail finishing with average times. The rest of the day Steve and I attended two excellent Driven Racing Oil Sessions given by Lake Speed, Jr., entitled Ethanol and the Effects on Our Cars and ZDDP and its Effects on Our Cars. A lot of data gathered by Joe Gibbs Racing Enterprises was presented to substantiate the optimum use of additives with today s fuels and lubricants. We came away with a wealth of information and now have an appreciation on what is the best approach to preserving our engines with minimal wear and keep these classic cars on the road. The last day, Thursday, with a Monterey Area Open Road Observation Rally, we were given a map and instructions that took us on a route up and through the back hills of Monterey, down onto U.S. Highway 1 through Carmel enroute to Big Sur. All the teams that participated completed a fun questionnaire on the returning with depicting what we observed along the route to the clues given along with some hilarious questions to answer. The round trip of approximately 125 miles took a little over two and one half hours, crossing over nine bridges enroute with some spectacular scenery along the rugged coast that Big Sur is famous for. Had not the highway been closed between Big Sur and San Simon due to two separate landslides and a washed out bridge, it would have been a real treat to drive that stunning route up from Hearst Castle which I did nearly 50 years ago when I first got my Healey. The event concluded with a lively banquet that evening at the Hyatt where awards were given out for all the different classes of cars that were judged by all the registrants at the Pacific Grove Car Show including best car out of the 184 cars shown, which was on display along with the last BJ8 Healey that was built. I was surprised, but delighted to receive a third place award as an original Healey owner out of 12 other original owner s cars that were entered in that class. Other awards were given for the Rocker Cover Races, the Funkhana, and the Rally. All in all, it was really a fun week that both Steve and Robin and I thoroughly enjoyed. We certainly encourage others to participate in similar events as we both would consider doing something like that in the near future again. For Sale 1971 MGB. $6,000 Green. Runs well.
