Letter From the Editor I hope you were able to attend our last meeting. We had a light turn out because some usual attendees could not make it this time. Marlene said that Fred fell and broke his hip and is recovering in a rehab facility. And Harry said that his wife Carol just got out of the hospital after surgery to remove a brain tumor. By a voice vote get well cards would be sent to both. Our thoughts are with them. We hope and pray for their speedy recoveries and look forward to having them at the meetings! This month we were supposed to have the front section reserved for our meeting. I arrived about 6:45 to find another group was already there and there was no Reserved sign like there should have been. It was a birthday party so I didn t make a big stink about it. I talked with the staff and they found us a corner spot in another section of the restaurant which wasn t too bad. A little bit noisy but at least we were sort of by ourselves. Tony said that Dave was looking around at Chevy Dealerships and maybe Savings & Load buildings to see if there were some place for us to meet. A dealership would not be a bad choice but we would probably have to switch to Saturdays or start earlier. Internet Web CaCalkins@astound.net Paul reminded me that I have not updated everyone on our house in Hidden Valley Lake. This was right in the middle of the Valley Fire. I am pleased to report that our house (and whole street for that mat- (see Letter... on page 7) On The Cover: This Christmas drawing was contributed to the Spyder Web by Lu Goni several years ago. We never forget! The Spyder Web is published twelve times a year by SFBA Corsa, Chapter 947 of the Corvair Society Of America (CORSA). 3 Minutes of the Last Meeting Meeting was called to order about 8:00 by President Tony Richards. Tonight we had 7 members in attendance. Notably absent were Harry who was attending to his wife Carol who was recovering from surgery, and Fred who is recovering from a broken hip. In addition Ed came to transfer the Club s refreshment items (coffee pot, cups, plates, etc.) to Clark but couldn t stay for the meeting. He did report that Faye was doing a lot better. We wish them all a speedy recovery. Treasurer s Report: Paul has transferred the Club s checking account from Bank of America to Bank of the West. The balance remains as reported last month at $ although current expenses will reduce that to around $2972. After seeing the bill Paul thought we should not renew our PO Box at the Orinda Post Office. We have talked about this before but maybe it s time that we re-visit this as this cost is about 16% of our dues and we receive very little club mail.. Membership: No report this month as Harry was absent. For most of us, Club memberships for 2016 are due January 1 st. Check your mailing label. Old Business: Nothing discussed. New Business: Attendees expressed their interest in finding a different meeting location. Harry s is getting very crowded and even though we had the front section reserved this evening, they fouled up and let a birthday party take it over so we were stuck in another corner. Tony said that Dave was looking at possible sites. Clark will check into the old Denny s which is being converted into a Black Bear Diner. Not sure if it s open yet. Changes coming at CORSA. They have a new non-member policy. Clubs now pay a flat $35 yearly fee to cover non-corsa members if they have any. Also Seth reported that Harry and Mike are retiring. CORSA will hire some outside outfit to take over some or all of the day-to-day management work, National Convention duties, and publication efforts. Events: Our Annual Holiday Dinner is scheduled for Saturday, December 12 at Harry s Hofbrau starting around 7:00 PM. Note we are reserved for the front section this year as the back section was already booked. It was decided to not try and have a raffle this year. The front section is not as large and it was felt this would be too much. But there will be cake! The Sacramento club will host the Spring-Fling again this year. Sometime in April. Central Coast Corvairs will again host the VairFest in Arroyo Grande next June. Seth reported on this year s SEMA event in Las Vegas. Ford had a Focus RS (first he had seen) that was being raffled off to support Juvenile Diabetes (he didn t win). Chevy had new Malibu Treasurers Report November 2015 (*) Paul Lacey Checking Acct. Cash/Checks Beginning Balance $ $00.00 Income Renewals $0.00 Expenses (**) Newsletter (Aug-Nov)+ Picnic + BBQ (300.35) PO Box Rental (102.00) and Camaros on display. Nice but he was not ready to buy one (but he did like the head room, enough for his helmet and that s important!). Walt asked about the newer Chevy Volt. He was looking to buy one but did not like the way the 2015 drove. Seth said the newer ones had better range and a different motor. Did not know how they drove. Tony suggested that we try to come up with more local event ideas (like his tour of the Pierce Arrow collection in Stockton which was wonderful). This would increase club membership and attendance. Seth mentioned a classic car restorer in San Jose (I didn t catch the name. Ed). They have a museum and repair shop. A group from Lockheed and the Silicon Valley club toured there a few years ago. Sounds great. Tech: The subject of what to look for when buying Corvairs came up. Seth always checks for rust first thing. Especially around the windshield. He said I ve attempted to fix this myself but am no good at it. I m also not good at (see Minutes... on page 10) Ending Balance $ $00.00 (*) The Bank of America account was closed and a new Bank of the West account started. The opening balance is $ (**) All expenses have now been turned in. SFBA Corsa - December 2015 page 3

2015 Holiday Dinner - Saturday December 12th at 7:00PM Our 2015 Holiday Dinner will be held at Harry s Hofbrau, E 14th St, San Leandro. Harry s is located near the North-East corner of the Bayfair Mall just off Hwy 580. See the map below. Harry s has a varied menu and is known for offering generous portions. This year we have the front section reserved which is not very large but should suit our needs. It was decided to not have a white elephant raffle this year. We will try to get there early and arrange the tables to best suit our needs. People will start gathering around 7PM and this should give us plenty of time to converse and enjoy a relaxing dinner. The informal atmosphere is well suited to renewing old acquaintances. There will be cake for dessert. Bring your wife and family, it should be lots of fun! SFBA Corsa - December 2015 page 5

Update On Rob Massari s 64 Spyder Rob sent in these pictures of the progress he has made on rebuilding the engine in his Spyder. If you have been following this project, you recall that the engine over-heated probably due to a failed harmonic balancer causing the belt to come off. He was not able to stop the car in time to prevent significant engine damage. For the last several months he has been working on this (as time permits) keeping us informed of his progress. As you can see it won t be long before his car is back on the road! Here are a couple of photos of Rob 140hp engine. Looks nice doesn t it? I can t tell if the cart the engine is resting on lifts or not. I looks like a creeper with a steel ramp and some 4x4 s. Maybe this is enough height to secure the mounting bolts when the frame is lowered. I will have to ask Rob about this. Some elements have been left off the engine to make it easier to install. Notably the carburetors and oil filter. By the way you can easily see his new harmonic balancer. Nice! page 6 SFBA Corsa - December 2015

Letter... ter) was spared from any fire damage. Some folks suffered smoke damage but that s it. All we had to do was get rid of the spoiled food in the fridge, clean it our, and de-odorize it. However just a couple of streets away there were many houses burned. Some lots have already been completely cleared and are ready for new construction, but there are others (some pictures below) where nothing has as yet been done. I can t figure what path the fire took. Somehow it jumped right over our street. We were exceedingly fortunate! Havy s, our local Mexican resturaunt, completely burned down. Good food too, hope they rebuild. But right on the other side of Hey 29 the Shell gasstation was untouched. And it was directly down-wing. Go figure... A few days after the last meeting I stopped by the Black Bear Diner in Danville which had just re-opened (they took over the old Denny s). They have the same separate room that Denny s had although the main restaurant has been drastically remodeled. I talked with the manager and he thought we could use a portion of the back room. I talked with Tony, Harry, Paul, and Seth and it was decided that we should try this out for our January meeting. So I made the reservation for Thursday, January 7 th from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. If we have a good turnout than I am sure we will be invited back. We will see how this works out. For most of us, Club memberships for 2016 are due January 1 st. Check your mailing label. For those that receive their newsletters via , you won t have a label to check. I will get with Harry and we will send out notices to you (most likely it will be Jan 1 st ). Note that checks should be sent to Harry to speed things up (address on page 2). I received the following from Bruce Mooers: Clark, I hope this note finds you well. My boys are really growing up - 1 will be off to college next fall and is 6'7" tall! You met them when they were babies. I am still looking for a super straight clean original late model coupe. I would love an evening orchid Monza or Corsa coupe. If anything like that pops up - I would love to get it. Regards. Bruce C. Mooers President Nickel & Nickel Winery Our Holiday Dinner is scheduled for Saturday, December 12 th at Harry s again. This time we will be in the front section as they said that the back section was already booked. Harry s is getting crowded these days and the parking lot fills up. At the last meeting I had to park way in back and Tony had to park down the street. It would be best to arrive a bit early. Here is a house that is completely gone and they haven t cleared the debris yet. Note in the front there use to be a trailer and two cars. Not much left (and no sign of the house). Sad.. In contrast this lot has been completely cleared and is ready for rebuilding. The only things remaining from the original house are the drive way and a rock patio area you can see in back. I am hoping construction will start soon. SFBA Corsa - December 2015 page 7

Minutes... paying $1000 to have it fixed either! Even CA cars have rust. AZ cars may not have rust, but the heat and dry conditions do a number on paint and interior parts (especially rubber). Classic Car Insurance was another topic. This is quite cheap (<$100/yr.) but comes with restrictions. Hagerty is a common carrier but there is also JC Taylor and others. Look around. Seth mentioned that all early Corvairs with 3 sp trans had non-syncronized first gears. It wasn t until 66 that they 3 sps were all syncromesh. Also when he drove a Corvair van up to Seatle it had a 110 a/t and 3.27 gears. It really needed 3.55 gears, When he were going less than 70 when approaching a hill, it would bog down and shift into low gear limiting him to 45 going up the hill. Swap & Sell: The Corvair parts in Lafayette have been sold. Someone from Antioch came and bought the whole shebang. Toni and Mike are delighted to have the space back again. Clark got a call from someone in Napa that has a couple of Corvairs ( 65 & 66) and parts that he has to get rid of by Thanskgiving. They are on Craig s List and will go cheap. Bruce Mooers is looking for a super straight clean original late model coupe. Bruce is a long time SFBA member that has had many excellent Corvairs over the years. Respectfully submitted, Clark Calkins, secretary page 10 SFBA Corsa - December 2015

The delicate 700 seat fabric on the bottom cushion of the driver's seat isn't torn, which it surely would be if the mileage was A couple pics are attached.
