Ski Trails The monthly newsletter for Suburban Ski Club March 2018 Website: A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Suburban Ski Club Members: It is still ski season! We have one more bus trip and our Canadian trip yet to come. Also, at the membership meeting this month, we will elect our new officers. I appreciate your having me as your president this year and am pleased to turn the office back to our very talented and hardworking, Beth Silverman. On February 20 th, an Eat-Around-Town was held at Olesia s Place in North Royalton. Twenty-two SSCers were in attendance. Melinda Kellerstrass was the host and I want to thank her for putting this evening together. Our next EAT is on March 20th and will be hosted by Mary Ellen Noss at Pastina Rustic Italian Restaurant in Mentor, OH. Look for details later in this newsletter. Our Eastern Trip to Killington, Vermont trip has returned with reports of some good skiing and much more, including a lot of really good food!! Thanks to Joe Sullivan and Frank Bolon for leading this very successful trip. We have had two major ski trips this year along with several bus trips. The final bus trip of the season is the Skier Appreciation Trip on March 9 th to Holiday Valley with dinner in Ellicottville, before returning home. Our third week-long trip is to Panorama in Canada and departs on March 11 th. Thanks to Cindy and Mark Bacon for leading this trip! Be sure to read the latter pages of this newsletter for photos of our one day trip to Seven Springs and our week-long Eastern Trip to Vermont.. Our final membership meeting for the year is on March 8 th. At this meeting, next year s officers will be elected. If you are not able to attend, please watch for a special with your absentee ballot. It is most important for you to send that in so we can insure a quorum at the meeting. For this March meeting, Cindy Bacon has arranged for a presentation from the Wellness Department at the Mayfield Heinen s. The title of the program is Be a Knowledgeable Consumer. Our speaker will be Courtney Kendzierski who is the Wellness Consultant from Heinen s. Cindy has certainly arranged for some very informative and interesting programs this year and we are most appreciative of all she has done for us. Please welcome our newest members to Suburban Ski Club: Mary and Bob Anthony, Denise Lincoln and Barney Olson. Hope to see you at the meeting next Thursday, at our social events and on our ski trips. Becky Marx, President of SSC president@suburbanskiclub.org
ELECTIONS 2018 We will be holding elections for club officers at our Membership Meeting on Thursday, March 8 th. This will be our last membership meeting before the summer break. Please see below the slate of candidates nominated at our meeting on February 8th. The slate is running unopposed but this does not mean we don t need your vote. In a day or two, we will be sending an with an absentee ballot. We hope you will return that if you can t attend the meeting. Since our membership has greatly expanded, we will need your absentee ballot to insure a quorum at the meeting and we hope we can depend on you to help with this. On your absentee ballot, you can choose to vote for the whole slate or only some candidates. And even if you want to abstain from voting for any of the nominees, we hope you will at least return your absentee ballot with a vote for quorum only so we can conduct a valid election. Our Skier Appreciation Trip is scheduled for Friday, March 9 at Holliday Valley with dinner in town following a day of skiing. This is a great way for us to end our bus trip season. If you have skied any trip with the Suburban Ski Club, you will receive a discounted rate of $74, our way of saying THANKS! Make sure you go on line now and reserve your spot. There is no early bird sign up for this trip but you may want to register immediately because this trip has a history of selling out. You do not want to miss one last hurrah on the slopes. Register on line at or download the form and mail it to Ann McBrian, Several of our members have been talking about doing some impromptu, meet-up day trips to local ski resorts. Please remember to post your plans on the forum section of our website. Make sure to include date, time, place to meet (our Holiday Inn in Mayfield Heights is always a good spot) and who to contact for more info. If you do not know how to post, please contact Cliff Lewis or myself and we will be more than happy to assist. Check out the website and see if you would like to join in on the fun, don t be shy. Everyone is always welcome. Keep your eyes open in mid to late March for a survey from the Trips and Tours Committee. The committee will be putting together a survey monkey to get some feedback on how we would like to structure our trips for next year. Since this is your club, we would love your input. All of the trips we were able to make this year were just great thanks to all of you! Register for March 9th and join us in celebrating the end of SSC s 2018 ski season. One last time: Don t let the leave without you!! Sign up NOW! Melinda Kellerstrass melinda@suburbanskiclub.org Page 4 of 13
SEVEN SPRINGS On January 31, Cliff Lewis led a group of SSC skiers to Seven Springs. John Hersch caught these happy folks at some apres ski dining with his ever-present camera. Counterclockwise, Pat Lewis, Dona & Jim Kless, Frank Bolon, Terrie Leske, Donna Stefano, Sue Kohout, Jan Friswold and, behind her menu hiding from the paparazzi, the very shy, Robin Spooner. A quartet of happy skiers about to head into the bar to celebrate a good day: From left, Trip Leader, Cliff Lewis, Pat Lewis, Jack Ganz and Joe Sullivan Page 5 of 13
Eastern Trip 2018: Killington, Okemo and Pico We are indebted to John Hersch and Don Haldi for memorializing our Eastern Adventure with their photos. You can find more of their photos on our website: What follows are some selected pictures that attempt to capture our week in Vermont. Here s the group gathered in the lobby of the Killington Mountain Lodge just before boarding the bus for home: Left to right, Bottom Row: Bus Driver, Art Bernstein, Joe Sullivan and Brad Carleton Row Two: Jack Ganz, Kim Sandler, Linda Nash, Jane Carson, Barb Gibson and Mary Ellen Noss Row Three: Ron Howard (in hat), Elaine Roth, Steve Ripich and Ed Noss Row Four: Hanna Kreierhoff, Chris Ujcich, Colette Gschwind, Jennie Haldi, Don Haldi and Jan Breckel Row Five: Cindy Busch, Patrick McPhillips, Barb Nagle, Ann McBrian, Dona Kless (partially hidden) and Dave Fisher Back Row: Steve Richards, Frank Bolon, Robin Spooner, John Hersch, Eric Bernkopf (behind John) Erich Bernkopf, Kurt Bernkopf, Jim Kless, Vadim Bronshteyn and Terrie Leske Page 6 of 13
The happy bus riders on their way to Vermont Father Erich Bernkopf and son, Eric: Eric (without the h ) came all the way from Ogden, Utah (note the sweatshirt) to join his dad and his brother, Kurt. That s David Fisher in the background. Ed & Mary Ellen Noss are very happy on the bus because they just won first prize (a bottle of wine) in the quiz based on knowledge of trip details. That s John Hersch looking very happy for them and hoping they share their wine with him. Page 7 of 13
Steve Richards and his assistant, Cindy Busch, volunteered to be bathroom attendants at the back of the bus. They paid their bar tab with the gratuities they earned. Frank Bolon, our New England Skiing Consultant, gives us an introduction to Killington Mt. as the bus hurtles to Vermont. No sooner had they disembarked from the bus when this group headed for the pub. From the left: Robin Spooner, Ed Noss, Kim Sandler, Colette Gschwind, Brad Carleton, Jack Ganz, Mary Ellen Noss, Jennie Haldi, John Hersch and Don Haldi Page 8 of 13
Our Treasure, Ann McBrian (on the left), is all smiles with Jane Carson. Ann is about to distribute the white envelopes to those in our group. They contain a very healthy stipend to pay for a dinner on the town. Joining the pub party were (from the left) David Fisher, Linda Nash, Ron Howard, Barb Gibson and Patrick McPhillips. Vadim Bronshteyn and Hanna Kreierhoff attempted to master the Jenga game. Page 9 of 13
Our Photographer, Don Haldi and wife, Jennie, out on the slopes. On the lift are these happy skiers: Colette Gschwind, Robin Spooner and Kim Sandler Patrick McPhillips and Chris Ujcich take a break for lunch. Page 10 of 13
At 91 years of age, Erich Bernkopf is an inspiration to all of us. We believe we skied with the oldest person on the mountain. Erich s sons, Kurt and Eric were also on the trip. The famous bubble lift at Okemo features a plastic canopy and heated seats. The latter gave some of us a strange sensation and raised a question about what was causing the warm feeling down there. Page 11 of 13
Our Photographer, John Hersch, poses for his own photo with Terrie Leske Ron Howard prepares to write his restaurant review for one of his onmountain lunch stops. On Thursday, it was a foggy day on the top of the mountain at Pico Page 12 of 13
This trio managed to find their way around in the fog and mist which, after lunch, turned into some serious rain that dreaded four-letter word for all skiers. From the left are Steve Richards, Cindy Busch and some interloper masquerading as a skier. Colette and Kim were asked to do a commercial for Bud Light. Of course, they don t drink beer but they faked it very well. It s late on Friday night and time to head home. After five days of skiing, some great meals and a cocktail or two, everyone is tired. Here Frank Bolon and Joe Sullivan help Jack Ganz get on the bus. Page 13 of 13
