Ski Trails The monthly newsletter for Suburban Ski Club JULY, 2015 Website: A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Suburban Ski Club Members, I hope your summer is going well and you haven t floated away in all the rain. With this issue of Ski Trails we are formerly announcing our 2016 ski schedule. As usual, it is chock full of many skiing opportunities for our members and friends. You will find the schedule on page six of this newsletter and again as a PDF attachment to the that brought you the newsletter. I encourage you to make a hard copy and begin mapping out plans for next season. Be sure to read the Report from Trips and Tours from our Co-Chairs, Jack Ganz and Frank Evan. They provide some details on the planned trips and also give you information on what still needs to be done to complete the schedule. Most of that involves some pricing that is not yet available. But the dates and destinations have been decided and you can begin to make your plans. We need to thank Nancy Lukens for organizing a wonderful EAT at Merwins Wharf on June 16 th. It was a beautiful evening in a very unique setting on the banks of the Cuyahoga River that may be unknown to many Clevelanders. As they sipped their cocktails on the riverside patio, our SSC group was able to watch the rowing clubs going through their paces. The only downside to the evening was that our group was limited to 20 diners. There was a waiting list of 10. Thanks also go to our Vice President, Judy Stowe, for organizing last Sunday s brunch cruise on the Nautica Queen. Although the weather was a little iffy as we left the dock at the west flats, the sun came out and it was a wonderful three hours of dining and viewing Lake Erie and the City of Cleveland from a unique perspective. See the photo of some of our group on the last page of this newsletter. Also note the Calendar of Events for upcoming club activities. There is an EAT at Bubba Q s in July and in August we have a canoe trip and then a picnic/concert at Blossom. And be sure to put Saturday, Sept. 19 th, on your calendars. That is the date for our annual clambake. Enjoy your summer but remember to think ahead to where and when you want to ski. Make your plans early so you can sign on asap and not be shut out. I hope to see you at many of our summer activities. Beth Silverman, President of SSC president@suburbanskiclub.org (216) Page 1 of 7

JULY BIRTHDAYS This is another edition of our series for recognizing the birthdays of our members. Don't worry, we will not publish the year of your birth, just the month and day. We have made that a ski club activity in some past years, and I would like to add it to the calendar again. A former club member got some inside information years ago that the Sunday after the fourth of July was always a quiet day for the park, and we have been going on that day for years. We go on all the major coasters, some more than once. Anyone who wants to join us can contact me about carpooling, and a meeting time and place. 3 Tuesday, July 14, 6:00pm: EAT at Bubba s Q Judy Stowe is our host for an EAT barbeque adventure at the famous Bubba s Q in Avon. We assemble in the bar for cocktails and socializing at 6:00 PM and then go on to dinner at 6:30 PM. Judy tells us that it s all about the sauce at Bubba s-q: mellow and sweet, with just a little zing of vinegar and spice. Bubba s claims their sauce is so satisfying you can lick it off your fingers and figure you ve had a pretty good meal but then, when you taste what s under the sauce, you realize it s really about the delectable deeply smoked ribs. Bubba s Q specializes in award-winning Southern barbecue with baby back and St. Louis-style ribs featuring their patented De-Boned Baby Back Rib Steak (as seen on ABC s hit shows, Shark Tank and Beyond Shark Tank ). In addition they offer smoked brisket, pulled pork, chicken and house-made sides. You can also enjoy the sports-themed atmosphere featuring former Cleveland Brown Al Bubba Baker who retired in 1990 after playing in the NFL for 13 years. Bubba s-q World Famous Bar-B-Q; 820 Center Road (Ohio 83); Avon, OH; (440) Directions: I-90 west to Exit 153 (Avon/Avon Lake--Route 83); Turn left (north) on Route 83; Drive about 2 miles; Bubba s-q is on the left (just before the tracks) Make your reservations with Judy: judystowe@gmail.com or (440) Sunday, August 23: Canoe Trip and Lunch CANOEING ON THE UPPER CUYAHOGA SUNDAY, AUGUST 23, 2015 My wife and I love canoeing. We used to do a lot of it and we are thinking it s time to get back on the water. So, Sandy and I invite you to join us. Mark your calendar for Sunday, August, 23. We will meet at 9:00 am at Camp Hi in Hiram. Camp Hi offers a variety of River Trips along 25 miles of the Upper Cuyahoga River designated as both an American Heritage and State Scenic River. The water is excellent quality for swimming or fishing. We will do a short canoe trip of 7 miles which will take 2 to 4 hours. It is all pure fun. Page 3 of 7

Consider making this a family affair - bring some kids (any age) and let them join us. Camp Hi will supply canoe, paddles, PFD s (Personal Flotation Device) and you supply the rest. There will be more details in the August issue of Ski Trails. After cruising down the river, we can enjoy a hearty lunch at Blazin Bills in Burton on Rte. 422 at about noon - 1:00 pm or whenever you get there. Blazin Bills is 10 minutes from Camp Hi. Camp Hi Canoe Livery is located at: Abbott Road; Hiram, Ohio Blazin Bills is located at: Main Market Road (Rte 422); Burton Ohio TO MAKE A RESERVATION: I need to make reservations for our group at both Camp Hi and Blazin Bills. The cost is $20 per person for the canoeing. Lunch is on your own. Just leave me a message at or jackjbg@gmail.com. Be sure to let me know the names of everyone in your party and, if necessary, identify any children along with your phone number. I WILL CALL YOU BACK TO CONFIRM YOUR PLACE. Jack Ganz Saturday, August 29: Picnic and Concert at Blossom Again this year, Ann McBrian is our host for a concert at Blossom with a pre-concert picnic. The ads for this evening characterize it as the virtuosos of jazz meeting the virtuosos of the Cleveland Orchestra. For the first time, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis joins the Cleveland Orchestra. A Pulitzer Prize and nine-time Grammy Award-winner, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis has been lauded for his work in both Jazz and classical music. It promises to be a great evening. Although the concert begins at 8:00 PM, we will be meeting on the Blossom grounds for a preconcert picnic. The place and time for that will be announced in the August newsletter. Ann has come up with an interesting food supplier. It will be catered by Moe s Southwest Grill featuring a Fajita $10.50 per person. Ann will be taking orders next month and you will find information and details about that in the August 1 st issue of Ski Trails. But you should feel free to bring your own picnic if you wish. Beverages are not provided and you should bring your beverage of choice. Page 4 of 7

A single lawn ticket price for the evening is $ But Ann is hoping to buy books of lawn tickets at a savings of $10.50 per ticket. In order to do that, Ann would like you to contact her to let her know you are thinking of attending so she will have some idea of the number of booklets she needs to purchase. The earlier Ann know this, the easier it will be for her plan for tickets. There will be more information next month along with details on ordering picnic meals with her but for now please help Ann s planning by contacting her to let her know you are interested. Should you not want to sit on the lawn, lawn tickets are also valid for general admission seating in the pavilion. Contact Ann at: mcbriana@gmail.com or (330) Saturday, September 19, 1:30 PM, Hiram, OH: Annual Clambake This is just a preliminary notice to save this date on your calendars. Details will be forthcoming in the August issue of Ski Trails. At this time we can tell you that Ed and Mary Ellen have again volunteered to host the event at their lovely home in the bucolic setting of Hiram. This has been our venue for the last two years and those who have attended agree it is a wonderful place to do our clam bake. REPORT FROM TRIPS AND TOURS [EDITOR S NOTE: Although the report below is from our Co-Chairs of Trips and Tours, Jack Ganz & Frank Evan, we decided to run the solo photo of Jack at the left. Even though this is July, we think Jack s picture gets us thinking about snow and skiing. In future issues we hope to give Frank equal billing and include him in the photo. However, we will have to wait until we find them both together on the slopes in 2016 to photograph our duo on their skis.] We found ourselves talking about our club s past ski schedule. Some of us remember when we only had one western trip and four bus trips each year, Yes, several years have passed since those days. The membership in Suburban Ski Club has more than doubled and we believe that a major factor contributing to this growth is because we have the best and most active recreational ski schedule of any club in the area. We now have two weeklong western trips, one week-long eastern trip and nine bus trips. We run bus trips on weekdays as well as on Sunday and Holiday trips (MLK Day and President s Day). The latter allow you to save vacation days if you are still working. This variety in our schedule maximizes the opportunities for all our members to ski. We have an outstanding program and we encourage you to tell your skiing friends and share the good news. Page 5 of 7

We are delighted to confirm that our 2016 ski schedule is in place. Please see the full trip schedule following this article. Print out a copy and put it in a prominent place where you can dream and anticipate. For your convenience in making your own copy, the schedule can also be found in a separate PDF document attached to the that brought you this newsletter. You will note on the schedule that pricing is absent. We are working on that. We know where and when we will be going but some costs are not yet locked in. I can tell you that the price for the Whistler/Blackcomb trip in March is $1549. We are working to keep our eastern trip to Sunday River and Sugarloaf, Maine below $1000 and our trip to Keystone under $1400. We have found that an all-inclusive, bargain-priced eastern trip is very popular and we also know that a second western trip priced lower than the other will be attractive to some. Our goal is to keep our bus trips under $80 and our two-day trip to less than $250. But there are still some questions to be answered. At this time we do not know the bus and lift ticket expenses for the day trips and the hotel and meal prices for the two day trip. And we do not yet have a quote from the bus company for the eastern trip and there are still some details to be worked out for the Keystone trip that could affect the price. We would like to think that we will have all the information we need by August and be able to publish the prices in the August issue of Ski Trails. If not, we will certainly have it all together by September. In the meantime, since the dates are set, you can begin to insert your ski dates into your personal calendars. One last item: Are you working out? Are you getting ready for ski season? Now is the time to begin. They tell us it takes a good four to six months to get in shape to ski. Let s build up some muscle strength and some endurance. OK! Let s GO! 7 Cruisin on the Lake with the Nautica Queen On Sunday, June 28, a hearty band of SSCers braved the wind and rain to set sail on the Nautica Queen from the west flats for a brunch cruise. They were rewarded for their fortitude with some wonderful food and an afternoon that turned sunny. They enjoyed great views of downtown Cleveland and Lake Erie as well as each other s company. Not everyone made it to the top deck for this group photo but here you can see some of the happy and well-fed cruisers. In the first row (from left to right) are Melinda Kellerstrasse, Ann McBrian, Ron Howard, Pam Fenn and Sue Kohout. Behind them are Joe Sullivan, Jason Chao, Betsy Wolf, Phil Meyer, Steve Logar, Trip Leader Judy Stowe, Linda Nash and Donna Stefano (Linda and Donna are demonstrating that the rain did indeed stop and the sun came out by sporting their designer sunglasses). Behind them are Club President, Beth Silverman and her husband, Tracy Blake. Beth s daughter, Kate, generously volunteered to take this photo and the Editor promised to give her a credit for her work. Thanks, Kate. And thanks to Judy Stowe, who put it all together.
