1 January 2012 Edition Trilogy at Glen Ivy COMMUNITY NEWS General Manager Ken Gibson Assistant General Manager John Rivera Landscaping Maintenance Antonia Vizcarra Pacific Crest Lodge Blue Water Sports Club Lifestyle Manager Monica Romero HOA Office Code Comp. Manager Joy Marino The Canyons Grill Landscape Maintenance Maintenance Manager Randy Hess Published by Mel Goldman A Happy and Healthy New Year! I want to thank you for your support for the Trilogy Newsletter. and Web Site, over the last 9 years The web site was created to keep you informed with current and accurate information from Shea and their management team. The site also provided a venue for residents to ask questions and seek answers over a wide variety of issues. A lot has happened since those early days of Trilogy, New Management, residents taking control of Trilogy and once again the website stood as an avenue for current and accurate information. Trilogy is a great place to live!. As always there is going to be controversy and there is going to be a need for a web site such as this as well as our newsletter. Keep in mind that both the website and the newsletter are here for you. You are free to post what your thoughts and opinions are on the message board. Let s hope in the year 2012 the BOD and all residents come together and work harmoniously listening closely to what is said and take appropriate actions to make Trilogy an even better place to live Thank You Mel Goldman President VP President Secretary Treasurer Director Director Harold Wolff Kay Rookhuyzen Marilyn Mohr Bob Abel Ed Carlson Judy Heinze Trilogy newsletter Mel Goldman Committees of Trilogy Design Review Committee Bob Portick Finance Advisor Bob Abel Landscaping Committee Lynn Recuay Neighborhood Watch Jane Snider Emergency Preparedness Jane Snider Rules and Reg Committee Bonnie Reed
2 Page 2 Newsletter Title Bob s Corner Well, twenty-one, (21), months of Patrolling Trilogy by Platt Security has ended. Complaints by individuals and a Petition for retaining or removal of Platt and a letter detailing four months without Platt vs. nine months later with them actually showed a slight increase in criminal activity. Our Board President on behalf of the Board met this with a verbal and written blasting, of the members! The Board also spent money (ours) on Legal Counsel to give us their opinion that the Petition was misleading and if they went with a vote to remove Platt it would have set precedence by usurping the authority of the Board. Somehow another Security company proposed that they could do a better job. The question is How are they going to be judged? Will the contract be shared with the members? Is this secrecy going to continue by citing privacy? This coming year, the proposed changers to our CC&R S will be presented to us for approval by 67% of 1317 eligible votes. Some of the proposals are asking to reduce the 67% TO 50% majority vote, another is allowing signing contracts greater than a year. This gives the Board more authority and we should not give it to them. Instead how about installing term limitations of Board members to two terms, large contracts with a justification for approval by 67% of the members to name a few. Yes, some voted them in, and that ended our representation! It s time that we have a more Democratic representation! Bob C
Page 3 3 Selecting multiple files Windows 7 You know that you can select multiple files by using the CTRL key or the Shift key. While this works effectively most of the time, there is always the danger of an error. If you frequently need to open or select multiple files, you can turn on the windows explorer check box system. Open Windows Explorer, Under Organize, select Folder and search option, View, scroll down the list until you find USE CHECK BOXES TO SELECT ITEMS. Then click OK. Set a Printer as your default printer If you have multiple printers attached to your system, you probably want to set one as your default printer. In XP, click Start, Printers and Faxes In Vista, click start, control panel, hardware, and sound, printers. In Windows 7, click start, Devices and printers Convert those 35mm Slides Many of us have long ago sent our 35mm cameras to the closet. But how many still have 35mm slides? Film will degrade with time. If you want to save these 35mm memories, you may want to consider making them digital. Using a flatbed scanner, and appropriate software, it can be done. Granted the process is time consuming but the end result is worth the effort. Dedicated flatbed scanners can cost as little as $ and offer great resolution. I personally am using an HO 4000 flatbed scanner and photoshop elements to do the job. You have a choice of hardware. Costco sells a box that will convert slides to digital images for approx. $65.00
Defend Against Identity Thieves 1. Install anti-virus and anti-spyware software. Page 4 4 If you are tricked into clicking on a phishing or otherwise leave an unprotected computer open to attack, Criminals will try to download malicious software, or malware, that will track your keystrokes and use your computer as an identity theft tool. "If your hard drive is running all the time, you probably have malware on your PC," says Tom Shaw, vice president of fraud and anti-money laundering at USAA. 2. Use credit, not debit cards. With credit cards, you're automatically protected for everything but the first $50 of a fraudulent charge. With debit cards, your account can be cleared out before you know something is wrong, and it can take months to get the money back. "That's why we advise people to carry an ATM card for cash and for all other things use a credit card," says Jay Foley, executive director of the Identity Theft Resource Center. 3. Check your credit report regularly. The easiest way to monitor your credit is to visit annualcreditreport.com and get your free programs. "You can Check each major bureau once a year, so with three of them you could pull your credit report every four months." 4. Change your passwords. The best habit is to change your passwords every four months or so and use different passwords for different styles Of accounts ( , social networks, banking, credit cards, etc.),. And don't keep a note of your secret codes in Your phone or in other places that can be easily stolen or hacked. 5. Stay on top of your mail. If you're leaving home for vacation, have your mail forwarded or stopped or get a trusted person to monitor and Shred it. Post office boxes are also safer than mailboxes. "People love to go into your mailbox and take your bills," says Philip Blank, senior security analyst at Javelin Strategy & Research. Take the extra step: Go paperless where you can, especially for financial statements. 6. Avoid giving out your Social Security number. Don't give it out unless you're absolutely sure about the person you're dealing with. When your doctor requests it, For example, ask if there is another ID you could use. This can be tough, but it's worth trying.

We wish them a much better 2012! Our year will begin with an event on Saturday, February 18 t.h It will be called MASH (remember the TV show?). More details will follow soon. 9 Page 8 9 The Trilogy Italian Club is hoping everyone enjoyed a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday! It is hard to believe it is 2012! Seems like we just celebrated the year 2000! The event that most Italian Club members look forward each year is our Christmas party! It is the time that the club gives back to the members by providing a low ticket price for a 'high price' party. Well this year we had the low ticket price but the party was cut short by a power outage! As always we made the best of a not so good situation. Fortunately we finished dinner but the rock and roll was not to happen! Two of the band members played piano and sax and we sang songs and just enjoyed one another until the final curtain came down! One bit of very good news is 'The Rockits and Hi-lites' will be retuning to play for us again on July 4th. at the Amphitheater! Stay tuned for the exciting details! We are busy planning our calendar for First in March we are traveling by motor coach to San Juan Capistrano for a Melodrama followed by dinner. Contact Rosemary for ticket information. Looking ahead we will collaborate with the Latin Club and Trilogy on The Roof club to bring you a good ol' fashioned Independence Day picnic and concert. (Starring The Rockits and Hi-Lites). Please if you have any ideas for events or would like to serve on a committee please contact me. We can't do it without you! I would like to thank my board members, Josette McGrattan, Pat Carlson and Myra Perk for all their time and talents, to all the Italian Club members for your participation and lastly to our Trilogy staff members for their continued support! We wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!! Ciao,
