Kev s Korner G day Folks Another two months have gone and its newsletter time again. What a busy two months it s been. We have had two socials, a blood run, a shed day at Keiths, a girls night out, breakfast morning, rode in the Illuminated Parade, had a weekend at Goomeri testing wine, displayed the Club at the Seafood Festival, and fitted a couple of rides in as well. Next month is shaping up to be just as busy. Keep an eye on the Ride Calendar on the Ulysses site to keep up to date with what is going on. Don t forget to keep sending in ride reports and photos, so that we can keep spreading the news. Keep on Reading On Kev If one synchronized swimmer drowns, do the rest end up drowning as well? We request a deposit of at least $20 with each order. Remember to include your shirt size. Branch Name Tags are also being ordered. Place an order with the Treasurer. Cost $12 each. In early August, my wife and I had the pleasure of a few days in Singapore. This was a business fact finding mission on behalf of the Branch. I m sure you requested me to go on your behalf. 5 If 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from diarrhoea, does that mean that one enjoys it? Welfare Report July - August 2012 Dear Fellow Ulyssians (and significant others), Last month I sent a request to fellow branch Welfare Officers across Australia to request assistance, if required, at the 2013 AGM. I am pleased to say that we now have a team of 7 Welfare Officers who will be on standby in the event of a crisis eg: Motor Bike Incident, hopefully we will not require their services. I have sent out a few "Thinking of You" cards this last month to members who are are either suffering ill health or who have lost a loved one. Please keep all those people who are suffering physically or emotionally in your thoughts and prayers. Hope all the dad's had a nice father's day, do join us in celebrating father's day at the next social, Kind regards to you all, Wendy For all of us who are seniors - for all of you who know seniors - and for all of you who will be seniors It pays to be able to laugh about it when you are! And, speaking of senior moments: "WHERE is my SUNDAY paper?" The irate customer calling the newspaper office loudly demanded, wanting to know where his Sunday edition was. "Sir", said the newspaper employee, "today is Saturday. The Sunday paper is not delivered until tomorrow, on SUNDAY". There was quite a long pause on the other end of the phone, followed by a ray of recognition as he was heard to mutter, "Well bugger me... that's why no one was at church today".
RIDE and SOCIAL REPORTS 6 th July - Social There were only about fourty members at the social this month. Winter must keep everyone at home. Kenn and Andrea Lowis of Neds Clothing fame came along to show us their latest range of clothing. Terry and Sofia Spary, ex Glasshouse Branch members, have recently moved to the Bay and came along to meet the locals. We also had Eric Grimond and Allan and Anne Wyvill attend the social to see what happens and meet up with the members. Ron, hard at work Sofia and Terry enjoying the night Anne and Alan came along to meet us Kenn and Andrea from Neds Blood Run (7-7-12) Numbers were very small for this year s Blood Run. The constant rain kept everyone at home again. Many thanks to those who contributed.
Ride to Wallerville Riders gathered for an am departure for Wallerville from the Torbanlea Roadhouse, Sunday 8th July, Not many braved the early morning & gloomy skies. To avoid being drenched the waterproof clothing came out of the top boxes and saddle bags, and everyone suited up. There wasn't a ride leader, so Chris Reeves had Gerdie, (his cyber know it all girlfriend) perched on his handlebars, and said follow me! Everyone was a bit dubious..., we rode North to the Bundy turn off, keeping a sharp eye out for more hopeful riders from the Bundy Branch at Apple Tree Creek. Alas none to be found, so our fearless leader, taking a left turn before the Bundy destination into South Kolan. Stopped at the pub, but, to our disappointment it wasn't open. Not giving up on our morning brew easily, he changed route and headed off to Bucca. Stopped at the pub for a hopefull coffee, but no, only cold drinks were available. We sat under the trees in the sunshine to warm ourselves. The group stated they hadn't been this way before. On the bikes again, through the back blocks, only making 1 U turn as (Gerdie the know it all, got it a bit wrong)! So, everyone does a U turn back to the missed turnoff, onto the back roads to Wallerville, where we found a fellow Ulyssian Kevin from Bundaberg. He was waiting patiently for our arrival as he missed us at Apple Tree Creek. Wallerville is a very quiet rural setting, a playful dog, a few children and a lonely drinker. We settled back, had lunch, then headed back to Hervey Bay via the highway, a pleasant day was enjoyed by Kevin-Bundaberg, Graeme-Burrum Heads, Greg- Maryborough, Eric-Urangan, Mark-Hervey Bay, Lorraine & Chris-Torquay. 13 th July Ladies Night Girls Night Out - Oh! What a Feeling!!! A very different movie of great historical content Hysteria lead to the development of one of the most popular toys in the world today. (No it is not a MOTOR BIKE). The evening was preceded by Champagne, nibbles and viewing a Burlesque performance from The Diamond Dolls. Laughter and a good time was enjoyed by all
15th July Breakfast at the Boat Club Eighteen fellow Ulyssians enjoyed breakfast on Sunday at the Boat Club, it was a shame it was so wet and miserable, it was good to see new and old faces arrive from 8.00am to 9.30am. A good time was had by all. RIDE REPORT SUNDAY 22 JULY 2012 BOREEN POINT Dave White led this ride on his big Victory. (The big Victory is about the same size as a Kenworth Truck, but with only two wheels. Following Dave is like being behind the Star Ship Enterprise.) The weather was fine and partly cloudy. Temperature was mild for the middle of winter. Overall a very good day. Eighteen members were on this ride on 13 machines, two of them trikes. We travelled down the Cooloola Coast Road and stopped for smoko at the Silky Oaks Tea Gardens. While there Lynne Nebel conducted a raffle to assist Branch funds, half the cash to the raffle winner, Graham Chaffey Chaff and the other half to Branch funds. Thanks Lynne. Congratulations Chaffey. By the way, Lynne will be away for the next three months. She is accompanying a friend to the Philippines. Happy holiday Lynne. (Dave will have a spare seat on the back of the big Victory for the next three months.) Back to the ride. From the Tea Gardens we travelled the back roads to Boreen Point via Cedar Pocket and Kin Kin. Lunch was at the Apollonian Pub where we met up with some Gympie Branch Members. Sunday lunch is their famous Pork and Beef on the spit. A very popular place for Sunday lunch. Hundreds of people attend. Tony and Karen Sciberras trike became a tourist attraction when a group of fellow diners wanted a couple of pics with the yellow beast. Tony obliged by taking a non-english speaking Croatian tourist on a short ride around Boreen Point. The female tourist was extremely grateful and emotional that someone would do that. Thank you Tony. A very nice gesture. The return ride was via Traveston to the Bruce Highway, through Gympie, stopping for a fuel stop at Curra. A little incident occurred while at the Curra servo. Cliff Leader had a flat battery and in the process of getting a jump start via battery leads a small fire happened. Some minor damage to the wiring on Cliff s bike, but it was still rideable. He won t be using those battery leads again! Thanks Dave (AKA Kaptain Kirk of the Star Ship Enterprise) for leading the ride. Wayne Russell #30448
UE s Day Out Sunday 22 nd July 2012 Hi everyone, I took my owners on a ride today. After a meet n greet at The Tennis Courts Maryborough with several of their Ulyssian Friends, myself a Harley Trike and 11 other bikes and 1 other trike left for Boreen Point. A point to note here when my owners left home this morning there were three trikes but a blue Boom Trike had other ideas about 6km out of Urangan.but we will let his owner tell that story! The leader was a pretty blue Victory and it sure could move along. The first stop was Silky Oaks Tea Gardens for morning tea via the Maryborough-Tin Can bay road. Then they travelled on via Cedar Pocket on all the windy bits, was a bit slow in places even though the roads were in reasonably good condition since all the rain!! Lunch at the Apollian Hotel was well received, I heard, and there were lots of other people too. 2hrs later it was time to head home via Cooran, Kybong, Gympie then a short stop at Curra Matilda. Another bike had a problem starting up again but it was sorted out fairly quickly by the 6 other mechanics there, especially after it started to smoke!! My owners would like to say that they had a really good day out and to thank all those that attended for making them feel so welcome. Christine & Brian Member # & # rd August Social Dave and Janelle enjoying the night Gary and Jane deep in conversation Chris and Sofie catch up for a chat We had our usual faithful fifty or so members at this social, with those who were there enjoying the company. Cliff played the Mildura promotion video on a big screen, which was much appreciated by all, especially our newer members who have never attended an AGM. It was certainly a big eye opener for them.
SHED DAY Sunday August 12 th was Shed Day at Keith s. As well as all of us having our bikes in a show and shine competition, Keith displayed a number of his old clunkers. Don t they look great? He has spent so much time in the research and build of these bikes, that it is unbelievable that he can actually have the time to hold down a real job. Keith gave us an insight into the history of each individual bike and what he had to make and do to get them up and running. He has done a fantastic job on his bikes and anyone who gets to see them has to be truly impressed. Thanks Keith for a great morning. Keith informing the troops about his bikes The next project A jigsaw to put together Whenever I fill out an application, in the part that says, 'In case of emergency, notify:' I put 'DOCTOR.'
SEAFOOD FESTIVAL AUGUST 12 TH The AGM team missed Keith s Shed Day to spend time promoting Ulysses at the Seafood Festival. There was a good team of members informing the public about the upcoming AGM and speaking to people about Ulysses in general. There were a number of bikes on display with one particular very large black bike being polished for most of the day. I hope no one is watching Oh no! Caught The Display Tony struck a pose just at the right time. Sunday 19 th August Ride to Imbil Four riders took part in this ride. From what I heard it was a very enjoyable ride with a particular red Italian masterpiece having trouble with its GPS, which was rather strange seeing that the particular unit doesn t have a GPS. This bike also had some trouble on a rather large roundabout in Gympie, where it couldn t work out which way to exit the roundabout. Apparently the three other riders, and half the population of Gympie were rather amused with the performance. A good day was had by all.
Illuminated Parade Saturday 18 th August The local branch was invited to ride in this years parade for a bit of promotion. We had a good dozen bikes and trikes turn up, all with various types of lights. The group looked pretty impressive with all the different colours. It was only a relatively short ride, which was just as well, because the slow pace really heated the engines. The streets were crowded with people and it appeared that they all appreciated seeing the bikes with their flash lights. I am sure that everyone is quite aware that the Ulysses Club is a group of people out enjoying their selves riding motorbikes. Wendy and Karen volunteered (I think) to walk in front and carry the flag. Thanks ladies. $1350 ONO Phone
Goomeri Winery Tour and Pub Stay 25&26 th August This year we had twenty people volunteer to do the hard yards and assist John and Robyn on their piligrimage to the Sourth Burnett Winerys. Seventeen of us from the Fraser Coast and three of our friends from Kingaroy. We arrived at the Goomeri pub late morning, with time to settle in, have a couple of quick drinks and then onto the tour bus. Harvey was the driver, he is a local identity who drove us around last year. The first stop was The Dusty Hill Winery, which is owned by the publican from Goomeri, where we had lunch. As expected the dinner was very appreciated. After eating we began the serious business testing the wine. We only visited three wineries this year, but I m pretty sure we tasted enough for six cellars. We all had our favourite wine, but most of us wanted the Chocolate port from Moffetdale. It doesn t last long once the bottle is opened. This year, Harvey took us for a drive to have a look at the Belke Petersen Dam, which is still full from the earlier floods. It s quite impressive when there is water in it. On the way back to Goomeri, he took us over Boat Mountain, which is between Murgon and Goomeri. I hope someone can remember how to find that road because it would be a good bike ride. Once we returned to the pub most of us settled in with a drink or two while some of the others had their Nanna Nap or whatever. Dinner at the pub was as usual, a feast, which we devoured while listening to the entertainment. As with all good things, the night ended with us all travelling off to bed. Next morning, most of us were up early to fill up with Johns breakfast, at the local park. Once that was over, we all loaded up and made our way home. By the way, that same red Italian masterpiece, mentioned above, refused to start on the Sunday, however, a threat that we might have to call the local mechanic, who spent the night in the bar was enough to get it to fire up and get its rider home. The only other casualty was a rather large Honda that was having with a back tyre. Another great weekend, and all the thanks goes to John and Robyn for their efforts. MEMORIAL RIDE, SUNDAY 9 th SEPTEMBER The Ulysses Club National Memorial Ride Day will be conducted by branches across Australia on the 9 th September. The Fraser Coast Branch is once again conducting a short coffee ride and gathering in remembrance of all Ulyssians who have ridden on. Assembly for the ride will be at 9.00am, at the normal spot in Maryborough, with a 9.30 departure. After a short ride, morning tea will be available at Dundowran Beach. All enquiries to Warren Jamieson See you there.
2013 AGM Event Progress & News September 2012 At the moment, there are is so much progress being made, that it s becoming difficult to keep up with everything. Consequently, we ve had to put a separate newsletter together to cover just those issues relevant to AGM business. The newsletter should be up on the new event website shortly, here are just a few snippets in the meantime. Everything moved up a gear when registrations went live a few weeks back. Early indications are that the 2013 event is going to be a big one! Accommodation in the old Borough is already nearing capacity, and Hervey Bay is filling up fast. On Tuesday, 14 th August the Visitor Information Centre reported their first Ulysses Fraser Island day tour bookings, and that happened before my Riding On had even been delivered! We re told that at most AGM Events, trader site bookings are normally slow to fill until just before the gates open. Organisers are usually left wondering whether any traders are going to reserve a site, and then, the bookings come rolling in during the last few weeks. By comparison, in mid-july when Garry & Tony started ing our trader packages, they had nearly 50 sites booked and paid in full by the end of the first week! This trend has gone from strength to strength, and now, nearly half of all trader sites have been reserved. The Rotary Clubs of Maryborough & Hervey Bay have agreed to combine their resources to manage all bars in the Piazza & the Hoecker. We recently met with Qld. Liquor & Gaming to arrange for the licensed sale of alcohol in these two areas. Members will be allowed to take BYO alcohol into the campground, but naturally they will be prevented from bringing BYO into the licensed areas where alcohol is on sale. The second draft of our Grand Parade traffic management plan has been sent to the Dept. of Main Roads for evaluation. Hopefully, this version of the plan will be finalised with Police, Main Roads & Council within the next couple of months. Channel 7 is working with community groups at Hervey Bay to host a Day-In-The-Bay as part of the AGM Event. It is likely this will be a waterfront festival somewhere on the Esplanade, and it will probably occur on the Wednesday of event week. Negotiations are under way to hire a 20 square metre big screen for the Piazza. This will be used for advertising, announcements and as part of the entertainment program. Anyone for Friday night football? Three local Ulyssians, Stan Armstrong, Frank Burkett & Ken White have come on board to coordinate signage at the event. A team-building weekend will be held at the Showgrounds, 29 th September 1 st October (The Monday is a public holiday). This will be the first real opportunity we ve had to get everyone together, to get to know each other, and to take our planning to the next level. During the weekend, we want to go through a variety of exercises, but basically the idea is to have a fun, social weekend with a free campover at the Showgrounds and BBQ dinners on Saturday and Sunday nights. Exact program details will be advertised shortly, but if you have any interest in the 2013 AGM Event, please join us It will be a lot of fun! As expected, the perennial question has been asked Do I have to pay to come to the AGM if I volunteer? The answer: Yes. Nobody is admitted to an AGM Event for free! A few members have indicated they intend to Come out to the Showgrounds, just for the day. Members wanting to come for just the day will have to pay the full registration fee of $95. Please note that this year there is no admission by the public at any time during the event. Until next time Rob White Director AGM Event
