1 Vol 32No 09 September 2015 MOTORCAR MORNING By Diane Lambert Eighteen Brit Beauties, 30+ Owners and Navigators, teasingly autumn-like temperatures, the Cooper River as the backdrop, breezes blowing, sun shining - this was the setting for the August 9th Motorcar morning at the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. Settling in our own designated place on the green, from 9 to 11 a.m., BCCC early birds welcomed members, non-members who wanted to share their Beauties, as well as those who just wandered around appreciating the cars. About 9 a.m., Vice President Wray Lemke rallied everyone together, and Prez Richie Hartley commenced an informal monthly meeting. Jane Schmitt, Events Coordinator gave a narrative of some upcoming events including a Picnic at Givhans State Park for which organizer Michael Rains gave more details. Also among the events mentioned was the Charleston Cup in November for which Organizer Mert Fox gave more information. There were other miscellaneous events and topics covered for which you can get the scoop in The Windscreen as well as on our great website. Millie Horton was on hand to show all of the great regalia that the Club offers, and sales were brisk on this beautiful morning. Obviously, we are all proud of our involvement with such an active club and its fun loving members that we want to show our spirit by displaying our "colors" so to speak. On hand were hats, lapel pins, special anniversary key fobs in a limited number, and a variety of shirts. I happily handed out our "calling cards" instructing all to put their name and phone number on it when leaving it on a Brit car... not mine! Of course that was all in great fun! I want to give a shout out to Mert Fox who so generously stops to pick up the coffee and donuts for our Motorcar Mornings and helps me set up the table and stash the cooler with ice and water for all to enjoy. He always makes this part of the morning more fun for me, and I want him to know how much I appreciate his help, and how much we all appreciate the goodies he brings. I also want to give a shout out to Wray and Susanne Lemke for generously donating a fold-up table for this event that I can carry in my trunk and set up by myself (although I've never needed to) along with the use of a beautiful Union Jack so there would be no mistake who we were. Also a thank you to Wray for making our directional signs which are extremely helpful in finding our group. We want to make this a regular event; however, coming into show season, the Saturday may vary so be sure to watch The Windscreen, the BCCC website, blasts from Dennis Wunsch or Jane Schmitt and of course the Post & Courier. Until we meet again, keep those Brit Beautifies purring!

3 The Windscreen Page 03 PrezSez By Richie Hartley President As we all know it is getting close to the time of our annual car show. The show this year is on Sunday, October 25 th. This is the time that we always ask for assistance from the members of our club to assist with the show and all things associated with our annual event. At our September meeting I will have the signup sheet for the event. This sheet has several different items that we always need help with. For those of you that cannot make it to our meetings, but will be available at the show, we will send this sheet out via to all members. There will be other requests as well. We currently have over 120 active memberships and over 200 members. We all need to try and take part in this event. We are always looking for silent auction items and registration bag items. For those of us that go to parts stores, retail stores and or order things online, take a moment and ask if they have anything that they may want to donate. Let the perspective donor know that their contribution will be acknowledged at our event. Depending on were you work, they may have items that could be appropriate for the registration bags. (I.e. pens, note pads, hats, shirts, gift certificates, whatever. No donation will be refused. If only half of the membership got one item we would have 100 things to use. Now take a moment and think how hard it can be to get one item. One bottle of wheel cleaner, one hat, one of anything would help and be appreciated. I am challenging everyone to try and find one item prior to the show. We all enjoy a car show. We all should want others to enjoy ours. I would like everyone to also keep in mind that our planning and events group are working on a rally type activity for the Saturday prior to the car show on Sunday. We welcome any and all ideas on how to have a great pre-show day with our events ending up at our reception on Saturday night. We are hoping to have the Saturday events as part of the signup sheet that I previously mentioned. Thank you in advance for signing up and finding items for our silent auction and registration bags and helping to make our annual event better and better each year. Keep Motoring Richie

4 The Windscreen Page 04 Minutes BCCC Aug 8, 2015 Mert Fox Secretary The British Car Club of Charleston members gathered at the Motorcade Morning on Saturday, August 8 th, near Waterfront Park, held under an overpass of the Ravenel Bridge on the Mt. Pleasant side. There were British cars (over 19) on display with 32 folks in attendance. Richie (President) greeted everyone present. Thanked everyone for participating. New members were introduced Keith Engelbert (84 Austin Mini). First meeting to attend were - Les Phillips, Tom Ratner, Rich Hippey, and Thom Reid Jane (events) discussed events for August & September > Sonics Drive-in; Farmer's Market on John's Island. September 12 th, Club picnic. Details in message to follow. The Charleston Cup is on November 9 th. Mert and Dianne discussed what the event is all about. Mert will coordinate with those attending (via ) as to where, how, when in getting everything coordinated. The annual British Car Day date has been moved to Sunday October 25 th. As always coffee and donuts were provided. A lot of car talk and other tidbits were shared. A good grouping of British car enthusiasts with their LBCs. Carshows and Events By Mike West August was a little light on real competition carshows in the local area, but there were some good gatherings where the BCCC was well represented. At Freshfields between Kiawah and Seabrook Island was a great Cars and Coffee with many cars and 8 of our British Cars. The venue is very pleasant and the crowd was pleased with the turnout. The drive to/from Freshfields is enjoyable down Bohickett Road with all the overhanging Oak trees, but that road is narrow! We are seeing more MGTDs in the BCCC and there is now a Black TD to round out all the original colors that the car was first finished in: Red, Green, White, Black, and Blue. The club has not had a black TD and it just showed up with its proud new owner under the Ravenel Bridge for our BCCC meeting! There were 36 members present and the biz meeting was short while the tyre kicking was fun. Of the cars, there were 20 British Cars all turned out nicely including a couple of older Healys and two Aston Martins, but we noticed there was nary a Sunbeam! Do Sunbeam drivers get to sleep in on Saturday mornings?? Come to the Biz meeting for donuts and coffee and see how frequently driven cars look! Cars and Coffee is held every Saturday morning at Mt Pleasant Towne Center and 29th August there were over 150 cars present including ten BCCC cars. C2 as we call it, is always fun! There was a Morris Minor Panel Truck (car?) there which was nicely restored. Do any of you remember when the Coca Cola Bottling Co on East Bay at Meeting used to deliver their products in Morris Minor trucks? It was a real sight seeing those small truck leave the building and head down Meeting Street in the 60s. Well, come to Cars and Coffee and bring your Sunbeam sometime

6 The Windscreen Page 06 Cruising to Charleston By Dennis Wunsch The Carolina Cruisers and Thunder Road Cruisers from Mt. Airy NC held a cruise in at the Sonic on College Park Road on Saturday the 22nd of August. They put out the word to all the local car clubs to join them for a night of fun food and fellowship. There were cars of all ilk in attendance, from rat rods to muscle cars, even an AMC Pacer, and of course a couple of British cars as well. Jack & Diane Lambert arrived in their MGB, and I drove the Stag for the first time in two years, not because there was anything wrong with it, but it was parked in the garage with a camper trailer behind it, so other that starting it up regularly, it has not been driven. I am happy to report that it performed admirably...i left home in a deluge...the windshield wipers worked, the top didn t leak and the motor purred like a rather large kitten. Not that I expected trouble, but I did leave my car trailer hooked up to the Excursion with all the tow gear in case I had a problem I could just call Tina to come get me. Michael Rains was there taking these pictures for the Windscreen, but he drove his SUV. There were very many nice cars there, but one that really stood out was a 1934 Chevrolet panel truck that you had to see in person to appreciate. Dennis Jones, the owner spent 9 years building it, and it was extraordinary. The crowd began to thin as the clouds moved in, and I made it home safely in the rain...looking forward to driving the Stag on a regular basis now that it is housed in my new garage.
