1 Alabama Forge Council Proudly Presents The 25 th Annual AFC Blacksmithing Conference *************************************************************************** 25 Years of Teaching for the Future; Through the Past September 9 th 10 th 11 th & 12 th 2010 Tannehill State Park McCalla, AL Featured Demonstrators John Phillips And Members of the AFC Bill Richardson Harry Brock Terry Lee Steve Alford Raymond Head & Jim Witte Family Activities Show & Tell Beginners Classes Iron Art Auction Tailgate Sale Tables (In designated sale area only)
2 2010 Demonstrators John Phillips Alabaster, AL As a contemporary blacksmith, John Phillips has spent the last the last 20 years exploring the artistic boundaries of forged steel. His works range from lighting and furniture to large scale architectural commissions and public sculpture. After detouring from his original plans to pursue a career in the medical field, John left college with his degree in chemistry and headed west to spend a year working on a wagon train. The wagon train traveled from Mexico to Canada and back on a year-long journey that was designed as a last resort treatment for serious juvenile delinquents. After spending 3 years traveling 12,000 miles through the western states at 4 miles per hour, John brought his new found appreciation for blacksmithing back to Alabama and opened his shop with the idea of producing forged ironworks until he could figure out his career path. The new career never came. 20 years later, John Phillips is settling in to his career as a contemporary blacksmith. Some of his formal accomplishments include twice receiving the Alabama Artist in Crafts Fellowship, placing several pieces in museum collections, numerous publications in books and magazine features and an upcoming segment on an Alabama Public Television production featuring Alabama craftsmen. He is currently serving as the treasurer for the Alabama Crafts Council. (John s demonstration will be at the Vulcan Pavilion.) Members of the AFC Celebrating 25 Years of Teaching The following members of the AFC will be doing short mini demonstrations; Bill Richardson, Steve Alford, James Witte, Raymond Head, Harry Brock & Terry Lee. These demonstrations will be done by individuals that you normally will not see do a demo unless you are from there local Forge Group. They will be at the Forge Pavilion and are geared to show you what you really can do in a short period of time. These mini demos will be very helpful in building your skills as a Blacksmith. The projects that they do will make great gifts for loved ones, as well as being possible parts of larger more complex projects that can be done.

Our Friday Nigh Blast contest will be the longest draw with an added challenge. The rules are simple. We will give you a bar of a certain length and in a pre-set amount of time make it grow in length. I will explain the extra twist to the contest on the evening of the event. This will be a great time for all, please consider participating. Prizes will be awarded!!! The Auction Your donated items for the auction are very much appreciated. The auction proceeds are where the AFC generates its income to offer blacksmithing scholarships and to host the free workshops each year. The conference fees pay for putting on the conference but the auction is how we continue to provide the activities that further the art and craft of blacksmithing. Our auctioneer this year is Col.
