GWRRA - Gold Wing Road Riders Association Region D - Michigan District Michigan District Region D "The Great Lakes Region" "Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge" AUGUST NEWSLETTER / BULLETIN Ken & Patti Kintner lower the prize. Our donation to the Rainbow Connection had to be lowered as well but we did give them $2,000. In the near future, we will be talking 1 to 1 with each CD to get their input, ideas or a commitment to sell more. Remember your chapter gets back 30 cents from each ticket sold! Please let your CD know what you think about it so when we call they can tell us what your thoughts are. Now to announce the winners! We will have photos in the near future! Anita Alkire President president@gwrra.org Ray and Sandi Garris Director of GWRRA Ken & Patti Kintner MI District Directors (517) gwrramiteam@gmail.com MI DISTRICT TEAM Michigan Team Contact Information is listed on last page Hello Michigan Members, Patti and I had a great time with all the members who made it to the Michigan Rally in Marshall. The theme Hillbilly Hoot turned out to be great FUN! From the Possum Queen contest to Spam Carving to best dressed we were pleased with the participation. Those Canadian Hillbillies really know how to have fun and participate! One fun surprise was during the best dressed competition when we were interrupted by a Shot Gun wedding. If you weren t there to watch I m sure someone will tell you about it. Just look at the pictures. Speaking of pictures thanks to all who posted their pictures on the district s face book page! That is a great way to promote what we do and how much fun we have so keep posting anything you are doing at your chapter from Safari Rides to District events or just Ice Cream rides. When you share the posts with your friends we will increase our membership by sharing our experiences with them from fun to safe riding. It s time to get rid of that attitude of been there done that and start sharing the Friendship Fun and Knowledge with the public and non-members so they will then hopefully join us. We want to thank all the chapters who had members help with all the things on the rally schedule that the district team just couldn t do without you! So a great BIG THANKS to you! 1 st Prize $10,000 - Marcy Collins from North Branch, Michigan! Ticket Sold by: F2 CD, Larry Kephart! 2 nd Prize $2,500 - Douglas Soule from Zephyr Hills, Florida! Ticket Sold by: Kristie Pullen, Chapter Y! 3 rd Prize $1,000 - Margaret Holey from Ludington, Michigan! Ticket Sold by C2 CD, Bruce Genia! As we plan for the future we are still deciding on locations for Wingless Weekend (SUMMER CAMP) and the 2019 Rally. We are still open to suggestions if you have any to share please contact us ASAP so we can get our ducks in a row! We still need a few volunteers to fill the Pre- Registration booth at Wing Ding on Friday August 31 st. Shift 1 is full but we still need 4 more people for 11am 2:30pm and 6 more from 2pm to 5pm. If you can help out, please us or give us a call! ken@vplenawee.com or Ken s cell phone (517) Again, Thanks for your participation! Ken & Patti Kintner, Michigan District Directors As for the District Raffle We need to let you all know that ticket sales were down $6000 from last year. A few years back the district team was in the same situation, with low ticket sales and at that time was forced to go from giving away a new Goldwing to a $10,000 cash prize. We are now at the point again where we either MUST sell more tickets or

District Motorist Awareness Program Coordinators Medic First Aid Coordinators Couple of the Year Coordinator I'm not sure when we've had such a "hoot" as we did at the Michigan Rally. The fun and ease of the "fancy git-ups" for clothes, the creativity of some of the campsites, that I'm sure, made it "just like home," and of course, the "good ole times of seein' friends from near and far," made it a great and memorable Rally. We thank Ken and Patti for a wonderful time. They did a great job of organizing, getting the many, many jobs done that needed to be done, and encouraging the rest of the Team in all of their respective jobs. Even through any little glitches, they kept it together, and learned what worked and what didn't for future rally's. We applaud them for their great first Rally. We liked the registration area. It was large enough for many things to take place at once without interfering with others that were going on. It was large enough that members could come in and rest, talk, laugh, and just enjoy being together. We also liked the little church for classes that were held both upstairs and downstairs. Gary held a MFA/CPR/AED class at the Rally this year. With twelve in attendance, he thinks this was a great idea for those who couldn't make it to their Chapter classes or for any other reason. The members seem to appreciate being able to take it as well. Perhaps this will continue for future rallies if the interest is there. As the Couple/Individual of the Year Coordinator, I loved seeing so many of our Couples and Individuals there. And it was encouraging to see so many out-ofstate Couples as well. I loved seeing the medallions being worn throughout the days. That shows pride, (in a good way), in accepting the honor that has been given to them. Being able to present the gifts to our Michigan Couple, Dennis and Gayle, and our Michigan Individual, Gordon, was a highlight for me as well. Gary & Carol Williams There may not have been food vendors there, but we didn't suffer either! The young man who had the ice cream was fun to talk with, and the ice cream was awesome. I admit I was skeptical of ice cream on a stick, but wow, it had great flavor, and was unique in flavor choices. We'd like to see them again! The Grange that provided breakfast outdid themselves, we think. The servings were generous and there was much to choose from. Personally, the waffle covered in strawberries was amazing and hit the spot. Once again, Jan pulled off dinner for us, as only she can do. We thank her again and again for all she does. Did everything go perfectly smooth? Of course not, and it would be unreasonable to believe it should be so. Things happen, often things that we have no control over. But whatever glitches came up, we believe that the FUN had at this Hoot, surpassed any of them. We believe that this Michigan Rally was the epitome of our motto of Friends, Fun, Safety and Knowledge. Thank you to all who had a part in this, and there are no small parts, as it takes us all working together to make it happen. Blessings, Gary and Carol Williams MFA/MAP Coordinator COY/IOY Coordinator Chapter J Directors or gwrra.mi.coy2014@gmail.com

Assistant District Ride Coordinators Neal Feikema & Susie Hartley All in all we had a great time and enjoyed the super member participation in all the fun events. We ve heard from many about the rides while there in Marshall. Many commented about the food events we were able to find and the local roads. Finding the good roads however was, let s say challenging. I can t remember ever having to backtrack, re-check and re-investigate roads for runs as much as Susie and I had to for the rides this year. We would check google and everything for maps but every time we got 3 or 4 miles from town the roads turned to *&^%$#. Then we d have to start again. Even happened with Dale Duncan s suggested ride. (Thanks Dale) We d get 4 or 5 miles of good pavement, then everything would just like fall apart. We ended up riding down to the area 4 different times to try something different. I d ask the local folks for info and they would just LAUGH and say You really should start over there, or there to find good roads. Even had to change the location for Thursday s dinner ride 3 times before finding the restaurant we finally ended up with. I told many folks there were good roads, BUT we had to get out of the county to find them. LOL!! I had 2 other sites in mind for the Safari ride, but had to change that because we would have to travel about 250 miles the get them. Thanks to Roland and Jenifer Lempke who set-up the Friday Ladies ride, but it was canceled because of rain. Some mentioned It s going to be VERY hard to beat this year s Saturday Lunch ride. We happened on a site that jut wasn t to be believed unless you were there. The folks at the fairgrounds were very helpful with road suggestions, but also said what is available is very limited. We can only hope they get funding to improve surface roads if and when we come back.

Assistant District Directors North Section Phil & Char Smock News from the North Wow, has this been a summer to remember! Weddings, Safari Rides, Campouts and Rally has kept a handful of northern members super busy. Phil and I just want to say how happy and proud we are of our dedicated members in Chapters J2, On-H, Y and Z (Chapters C2 and K2.where ya been? You ve been missing out on a ton of fun). The four latter chapters have had some great rides and awesome restaurant experiences. The campout food has been out of this world and the views along the way to our combined Safari rides; breathtaking and FUN. In addition, what can be more FUN than spending time with our friends and meeting new people? Meeting new people is just one of the many great happenings we had on our Safari ride to Drummond Island. We left Clare with three bikes then stopped in Gaylord and picked up two more. Next, we picked up Raineys in Indian River before we gathered up the Massaways in St Ignace. We ate lunch in St. Ignace and got to know our new riders a little. Massaways have been members for a good while now and we encouraged them to open Chapter Q back up. We listened to their concerns, and tried to reassure them that they do not need to keep their chapter open during the winter as long as they keep in touch and pass on our district and section information to their members. We ll see where it goes. We also had the pleasure of meeting another couple who where friends of the soon-to-be newlyweds that were on our ride and new members of J2. Meeting the new people didn t stop there. A silver Goldwing pulled to the curb by our balcony tables and Neal Feikema made a point to invite them up and introduce themselves. They were from Sturgis, MI and there to see the Powwow. They were disappointed in that and asked if they could ride out to the island with us. Of course, they were welcomed along. It was a great ride led by Paul Massaway and his wife Marion. Once on the island, we were greeted by Kip and Janet from On- H who led us to our campground. We passed Bob and Kim Scott on their way out, so they turned around and came back to say hello. Suddenly, we were joined by Roland and Jennifer Lempke who were in their car, but not deterred from following us on a guided ride provided by Kip and Janet. We only stayed overnight and would have liked to see more, but it was a great time with great friends for life. Earlier in June, Chapter Z hosted a campout in the Boyne Falls area and took us to the Rogers City Calcite Mine on our Saturday ride. All the while a feast of roast beef, potatoes, rice, two veggies, and all the fixings was being prepared by a chief cook that worked on board freighters for a living. Home made ice cream topped that off. It was pretty much the same crew of members that met in Gladwin for our Section Campout. Despite our Saturday ride to Grouse Haven Lake getting cancelled due to rain, it cleared up enough to let a few brave souls take an afternoon ride out and get ice cream at the Corner House on Rt. 18 north of Gladwin. If you ve never been there, it s a destination you must put on your ride list. Lots of flavors! Many members in the North Section took their ARC/TRC classes in Grayling and Sault. St. Marie, Ont. The Grayling class was the hottest on record in that area, but still another opportunity for fellowship. It sounded like it was pretty nice in the Sault; those lucky riders! Once all that wrapped up, it was time to head out for Rally. Phil and I were lucky enough to get right in the midst of our chapters and we all had a wonderful time. It didn t hurt that our section took almost all the main awards on Friday night s Fun Night. Roland competed and won the Possum Queen contest! Kip won the Best Dressed Individual and took the Best Dressed Couple award with his best gal, Janet at his side. Neal and Susie came in second on the Best Dressed Couple, and boy; did they put on a show! On-H took the Best Dressed Group and Carol Rainey won the third place Spam Carving contest. A few North Section members competed in the Hatfield s and McCoy s Family Feud and we did quite well. We all hooted and hollered to support our fellow section members until some of us was hoarse. The next day, Dan Sparks and Nick Poole won awards in their bike show categories. It was a great week for the North. We came up with a new slogan: The Section that plays together, stays together! We have a lot of pictures posted on the website, Facebook and the GWRRA Shamrock Wing J2 Clare Facebook page. The best picture for us was awarding Larry and Linda Shaule their Senior Director s Awards. It was well deserved and they will now be in the running for Director of the Year competition at Wing Ding. So, now it s on to Wing Ding and several Section members have plans in place to get there and meet up. The Saturday before most of us leave for Wingding, we are having a Section Picnic in Boyne Falls. That is the second of four Section outings we planned for this summer. We have two other Mystery Rides on Sept. 22 nd beginning in Kalkaska, and on Oct 21 st starting out from Fife Lake. In between those rides we will be attending the Fall Officers Meeting in Jackson (tentatively on Sept. 29 th ), attending the Knights of the Hatchet Campout in Ontario (see flyer) and celebrating an anniversary with Chapter Y on Oct. 13th. Who says summer is over come Sept.? Come on out and join us if you want; everyone from any chapter is welcome. Call for times and locations to meet: We ll end with this thought; we were just listening to David Bowie singing Dancing in the Street. It made Char think of all the fun we will have at the upcoming Wingless Rally. The theme is Summer Camp. Now, isn t that a great way to start the spring thoughts of summer riding flowing? Staff is working hard on getting a location and fun plans in place. So, stay tuned for the next edition of News from the North. Phil and Char Smock Assistant District Directors North Section

2018 District Couple of the Year Dennis & Gayle Jisa Greetings from the Michigan Couple of the Year for 2018! Many of you know us but we will give you a little bit of our history for those who have no clue who we are. We joined GWRRA in 1986 and are Life Members. We have held many positions including: Sunshine, Goodies, Food Coordinator, Rider Educator which took us to becoming the Rider Educator of the Year and being recognized by the Region for our efforts in this area. Gayle was Treasurer in the Chapter for 18 years and for the District for one year. We were Assistant Chapter Directors twice, Chapter Directors, Assistant District Directors for several District Directors. We were in charge of the Raffle Tickets for the District for a year. We attended many Wingless Weekends, several different District rallies outside of Michigan and many Wing Dings where we worked registration, did bike judging and one year we were in charge of Top Gun. During our year as Mi Couple of the Year our goal is to visit as many chapters and their events as we can! So far we have been to Chapter s C, D-2, E, H-2. J, J-2, S- 2 and V. We attended the Michigan Rally and will now check out your web sites and the District Events list and see where we may head next. We are working on the Safari locations and have done 12 of the 16 thus far. We went to all 16 last year and a lot of them twice!! This is a GREAT way to see what is in our own state and visit others along the way. Check it out if you haven t done it yet. We have traveled many miles over the years and have been in 48 states and most of Canada, at least once. Dennis has logged in close to 900,000 miles and Gayle has 450,000. Why does he have twice as many as Gayle does, you ask?? Well, we have four children and when they were young it was hard to find someone willing to care for them when Dennis rode..so Gayle was a Motorcycle Widow..like some are Football Widows etc. Ha Ha!! We helped start a motorcycle group when we lived in Ohio and belonged to the BMW Detroit Chapter for a couple of years when we moved to Michigan in Dennis learned about GWRRA and Chapter E from a co-worker. He attended a few gatherings before Gayle braved the new territory. Being so shy she was not t sure this was for her! She sure learned quickly that they were a great group of people to be around and wanted to go back. It didn t take long before she was volunteering to be the Treasurer! Wink Wink! We hope, if you are a Chapter Couple that you really think hard about going on to the selection process for our District. It is a big HONOUR to be chosen as your Chapter Couple and it isn t hard to go on. If Gayle and Dennis can get the nerve to stand up there in front of our friends at Wingless, believe us when we say.so can YOU!!! We plan to attend Wing Ding in Knoxville and hope to see a lot of you there as well.!! See you somewhere soon, we hope!! Dennis & Gayle

District Webmaster & Newsletter Editor Ken Kuiper Hello Michigan District, My name, as shown at the top, is Ken Kuiper. At the Wingless Weekend Ken Kintner ask if anyone could step up and help with the district website. Since I have taken courses to learn how to build websites, I answered the call. In June he asked me if I could do the district newsletter, guess what I said, go ahead guess. Very good, I said yes again. Now don t forget, I also have been the DJ for Wingless Weekend for I think 6 years and love every minute of it. It is my pleasure to serve the members of GWRRA Michigan District. A little about me. I have been married to my beautiful bride, Debbie, for 42 years on July 3. We have 4 children, and 6 grandchildren. I don t think there will be anymore grandchildren, but you never know. I worked 33 years for Ford Motor Company. 15 years was at the Sterling Axle Plant and the rest was at the Romeo Plant, which is where I became a Toolmaker. I retired in December 2008 and have been working ever since, (why stop working because one retires). I started riding a 250 Kawasaki when I was about 26 years old. I don t know how I survived. Was almost in 3 accident, and hit the rear of a car when a nice older lady turned in front of me. I didn t start riding again for many years. A year before I joined GWRRA I purchase a 1984 Yamaha Royal Venture ( Venture Royal). It was a very top heavy bike and I did not have a lot of riding skills developed. A year later I purchased a 1985 Honda Goldwing. I remember Debbie and were heading north on I75. A group of Goldwingers past us. I instantly fell in love. I told Debbie that some day I am going to have one of those. After having it for a few days I looked up Goldwing groups on the net and I found GWRRA Chapter A. Two months after joining a call went out for someone to take care of making coffee and getting the snacks ready at the gatherings. So I answered the call. A few years later I was promoted to promotions. Then I took care of the website, then I became the newsletter editor, then I became treasurer, then we became the COY, and then we became Chapter Directors for 3 1/2 years. What a ride! I want to say something about the website and newsletter. The most difficult problem with the newsletter and website is getting information from the members. I will need pictures, articles (in.doc format), or fliers (.pdf), whatever you would like to have on your website and/or newsletter. Please send them to me at kekuiper@outlook.com. Thank You Ken Kuiper Michigan District Webmaster & Newsletter Editor
