1 April - June 2017 From the Editor: What a fabulous start to the year with the Dinner at the Shanklin Conservative Club. A brilliant meal, a great number of people turning out and such a lovely atmosphere. Thank you Glenys for all the arrangements. Then breakfast at Puckpool. It seemed like a massive number of people turned out for this event, new faces as well, which is so encouraging. They certainly serve a fabulous breakfast and cope with so many in one go, thank you to the staff at Puckpool, and to our Glenys for making the arrangements. Change in branding for the Club! I must admit I thought it was Ken on one of his wind ups. It wasn t until I received my new window stickers that I realised it was not some hoax from Ken. More and more Motorhomers are joining the club so it is only appropriate that the name should express this. Here we go! Two rallies under our awnings as we gear up for our Birthday Rally at Havenstreet! The attraction of the sounds of the railway, the birds of prey and of course the real ale! What could be better. For Angela and me another anniversary as Havenstreet was our very first meet with the IOW Caravan and Motorhome Club Centre. What a setting for what is always a fab weekend. Come rain or shine there is plenty to do or not to do, whatever takes your fancy. I am looking forward to being tempted by Rev d James; thinking about it David owes me a pint! Can t wait! See you there. 2 Chairman s Pitch: Well who would have believed it? That monolith, staid and conservative institution formally known as the Caravan Club has woken up and has at last recognised that motorhomes are a very large and important part of the caravan fraternity. I welcome the new outlook of the club, but I recognise that the new logo won t meet with everybody s taste, some will like it; others will struggle with it. But perhaps it's me and not our esteemed Club Executive that s an old reactionary, change happens and for good reason sometimes. Yet even with these brand changes, a number of challenges continue to focus our attention and I dare say that won t alter, even with a new image. We must continue to seek out with the ferry companies the best deals possible for our island members. It does seem unfair when mainland members appear to get impressive deals through the Club, and yet islanders get little support when travelling to the mainland. Similarly with the Club s own Southland site here on the island; booking and making arrangements as the local centre, forces a number of constraints, and that can become off putting having to jump over so many hurdles! We will continue to focus these challenges, on behalf of our island members. Having said all that; the benefits of being a club member are I believe second to none, especially when you re an Isle of Wight Centre member as evidenced on the weekend of 10 th 12 th March when we had a super rally at Appuldurcombe. We had the pleasure of being able to welcome four new couples to our Centre. I hope that they will be able to come to future rallies and enjoy the opportunity of making new friendships and the Club is great for some things such as overseas travel, Red Pennant, C.L's etc. Glenys and I are going to a holiday rally in July laid on by the Devon and Cornwall Centre, I know that we will get a very warm welcome and are bound to meet up with Mainland members that we have met on other Mainland events. To my mind what makes a club is the people in it, and what s more; I would not have it any other way. Regards David Secretary's Pitch: My wife, Debbie and I attended a very well organised New Year Dinner in Shanklin and the Breakfast at Puckpool earlier this year and had a thoroughly enjoyable time meeting a large number of Centre members. This was a first for both of us as relative newcomers to the Centre and we were not disappointed. Since the turn of the year my life as Secretary of the Centre has been quite busy and very rewarding with the distribution of Rally Books, Newsletters and various updates to all Centre members. Graham Morris worked very hard to produce the Rally Book for 2017 and Head Office at East Grinstead thanked us as a Centre for embracing modern technology with the production and distribution of an electronic copy. This has also been well received by other Centres and is helping to keep our distribution costs to a minimum. Hard copies are being distributed to Centre members by-hand whenever the opportunity arises, but if you would like a copy posted to you please feel free to contact me. At the time of writing I have received Rally Books from 41 Centres all of them promoting their own rallies and events. Please let me know if you would like me to check this library for events or rallies that you may be interested in attending. By the time you read this newsletter our first two rallies will have been completed. I am sure they will be enjoyable events bringing us closer to the summer months when I am sure we will be able to venture out more and enjoy the good weather. Debbie and I are very excited about the rallies and adventures that lie ahead for us in our motorhome this year with the excellent venues arranged by Ken and, in addition, the National at Sandringham and our own personal adventures in Poland. We look forward to meeting many of you on the campsites of the island throughout the year. David Secretary seciowcc@gmail.com

3 Treasurer s Pitch: Hello everyone and all new members who don t know me. I m Cyndi and I am the treasurer of the Isle of Wight Caravan & Motorhome Club Centre. This is my second year as treasurer, after being encouraged by the new chairman into taking over from him and doing the deed. I have enjoyed my first year and am going on famously into The only problem I have is when Graham asks for our own articles for the Newsletter. I have to really think as to what to write because it doesn t do any good to keep repeating myself. Now let me think what the Centre has done that involves me.. We had a brilliant New Year Dinner at the Shanklin Conservative Club, where I collected all the cheques for the meal beforehand, ensuring that they were in the bank to enable us to pay for the lovely meal that we had, which came to We also had a lovely raffle where people donated prizes and managed to raise for Sophie Rolf Kissy Puppy charity. This is our charity for the year and of course what a good start for We are in the process of having to purchase a new marquee due to our old one being picked up in a storm and thrown over the tree tops at Eddies Farm Rally last year. The Rally Book has been successfully published and hoping everyone has managed to obtain it from the website. Included in the book are advertisers that we welcome every year, we are very grateful for their support. This is another source of income that we have and I have been sending out invoices to each and every one of them. We mustn t forget that last year s accounts had to go to the accountant for checking, which they have approved thankfully. Because of the quietness of the winter I don t have much to do, however come March when the first Rally at Appuldurcombe is the start of our rallies I am busy with site fees, admin, provisions, and everything else that helps to run a rally, also don t forget all the spreadsheets that accompany these. Of course we mustn t forget that every rally brings in an income of 2.40 per unit that goes towards our funds for anything that the centre needs i.e. the marquee, maintenance of the trailer that carries the marquee to rallies, generator and so on and so on. Well I don t think I ve done too badly with informing you what the treasurer has been doing; but come the next newsletter I ll have to get my thinking cap on again wont I? Thankyou everyone, Cyndi your Hon Treasurer Rally Secretary's Pitch: The rally season got off to a good start at Appuldurcombe Gardens, Wroxall. Members who weren't staying on the rally field joined us for coffee after struggling through the mist arriving to find the sun shining. As usual the banter and laughs flowed and Saturday evening was spent in the Community Room there. Fish and chips arrived at 7pm as ordered and everyone seemed to enjoy them. Having wound up Glenys all week about a game I had invented. I had Glenys and new recruit Pauline sitting out the front getting people to guess the connection between them. Only I knew the answer, which after a lot of strange guesses turned out to be that they had both lived in a house which had been struck by lightning. As usual, drinks and laughter flowed until we got back to our vans. Sunday morning was greeted by pouring rain which didn't look like stopping but it eventually cleared after our coffee get together and we all left with the sun shining. Please support as many rallies as you can as I have tried hard to keep our old favourites as well as some new venues to enjoy. Cheerio for now and hope to see all of you at sometime during the summer. All the best, Ken. STOP PRESS. From our Chairman David.. We are delighted that Jeff and Sandra Johnson have been co-opted onto our committee.

4 Supporting our Advertisers Don t forget, to support those who have advertised in our Rally Book. When using them please say that you saw their advert in our Rally Book. If you have taken up the services offered by one of our advertisers and wish to record your feedback, please send to Graham Morris (revcanongraham@gmail.com) ASB Caravan Services. I have used them to supply and fit a Gas BBQ outlet to my van. Workmanship 100%, price spot on. I recommend them without any hesitation. Graham Morris. Goodyears Outdoors Check with Goodyears first before using Amazon or Ebay, their shop is overflowing with everything imaginable for the discerning caravanner or motorhomer! Personal as well.

6 Cyndi Pushman reveals her secrets!! How long have you been a centre member? My hubby Terry and I have been members since approx Crystal Ditty Gilly Favourite outfit owned? I liked Crystal but it was very basic, Ditty was too small for us but Gilly is just right and is being upgraded for future adventures. Do you have a name for your outfit, if yes how did you choose the name? Crystal was named after Crystal Palace because she had an Eagle on her bonnet and Crystal Palace FC are called the Eagles. Ditty was named after her number plate D177Y and Gilly the same G711Y. Special adventures in your outfit? Picnicking on the island on Yarmouth Common or Culver Downs. Favourite places visited? Cornwall and Devon. Favourite activities whilst caravanning/ motor-homing? Meeting old friends and chewing the cud. Favourite food? Homemade Shepherds Pie or Spaghetti Bolognaise that we take with us when we go camping. Favourite touring site on IOW? We like all of them but went to The Orchards on one of our first camping adventures and enjoyed the site very much. It's like being miles away yet less then half an hour from home, just like the Rally's make you feel. Particular event/story to tell? We went to Folkestone one weekend with the eldest boy and his family. We had a lovely time and even went down on the beach and the granddaughters went into the water, fish and chips on the harbour and a lovely walk through town. The next day the skies opened up and down it poured, the son s tent leaked and his wife wanted to go home, but the girls wanted to stay with Nan and Grandad. They even thought of a way, how we could all fit in the camper and under the awning. That was until suddenly the breathable mat we had in the awning was sending up muddy water all under our feet. It was like a quagmire mud and water everywhere; we had to quickly put everything up so it didn t get wet. The son and family went home and once the rain stopped we packed up and returned to the IoW. What advice would you pass on to a new caravanner / motor-homer? Be willing make friends for life and join in. What is your must have accessory whilst out with your unit? Jump leads and power pack and a bottle of wine. How would you sum up your caravanning / motor-homing adventures? Absolute perfect for this retired couple. Cyndi is also our Centre Treasurer, and a real treasure she is. Cyndi we all join together in saying : Thank you for the contribution and commitment you make towards this Centre.
