3 ANNOUNCEMENTS John Brownrigg: New Kiwanis shirts are here pick yours up ASAP. Most have been paid, but a few still owe $22/shirt. A child s small size shirt was mistakenly included, and it was decided to give it to Janet to award to one of the K-Kids. Bob Loveridge: Castleton Kiwanis Club s famous chicken BBQ takeout is Sun Oct 26 th. OCTOBER BIRTHDAYS: none OCTOBER ANNIVERSARIES: present Jim & Terry Parslow and Lyndon & Linda Ellis and absent: Bill & Betty Jean Whipple (50 th!) and Peter & Nancy Stevens We sang, or at least tried to sing, to those present, and certainly enjoyed Eve s great chocolate cake! PROGRAM Member Randy Wheeler introduced the Boy Scouts from Troop 1701, including his two sons, and explained that the 50 mile backpack hike in the Adirondacks was a new experience for all of the scouts, and also for him. Michael showed the slides of the trip, made in August this summer, but Randy explained that there were no pictures of the months of preparation: conditioning their bodies, especially feet, breaking in their boots, and collecting the necessary equipment and food supplies for the 5 day stay in the wilderness surrounding Cranberry Lake. Called the CL50, the trail circumnavigated all of the lake, and is 50 miles in completion. Dividing the hike into approximately 10 mile segments, they set up camp each night, ate their dinner, slept soundly, and rose the next morning to start off again. Each of the scouts narrated the pictures, relating some of their adventures. On day two one of the scouts had to turn back due to ankle pain and was taken back to the parked car to go home, their only casualty. On the second day they lost their water filter, and thereafter had to treat their supply by boiling or with tablets. They had to cross one pond on a long but narrow log; footing became treacherous, and balance precarious due to the heavy packs. They placed sticks into the bottom on either side to assist future hikers, one of their service projects required by BSA. One scout did fall in, but survived. Another service project was putting a directional arrow along the trail at a confusing junction, again to help others. On the third day they diverted and climbed Cat Mountain, a rocky trail with a fantastic view of the rugged terrain. They were able to swim every day which was refreshing, and at one place found a smooth rock slide which they really enjoyed. Their campsite that night was at the

4 inlet to Cranberry Lake. On the fourth day their service project was clearing a downed tree that had blocked the trail. One of the scouts had made a chocolate cheesecake from his dried provisions, and of course it was very soft. He was covered with the evidence, and caused a commotion among a few college students when he asked them for some toilet paper! They encountered a very large two level beaver dam which was holding back a great deal of water. On the fifth and last day, they had the best campsite on Cranberry Lake, complete with their own private beach. There were only six miles to get out, and it was relatively flat terrain no problem! The final pictures showed the boys enjoying huge ice cream cones after completing the entire 50 miles! Pat Lane congratulated the group, and presented each scout with a Certificate of Appreciation for giving us such an entertaining program, and the club gave them a loud round of applause for their amazing accomplishment!

5 HAPPY DOLLARS $ Eve Ward: I want you all to know that there really are good people out there. Last week I found a note on my windshield with the name and phone number of the lady who had scraped my car. I had it repaired, and today I received her check with her apologies! $ Stuart Nippes: I m having withdrawal from the presidency! While visiting in New Jersey I saw one of their Kiwanis Clubs collecting food for their local food pantry! $ Dale Hall: I did a 50 mile hike without stopping----a long time ago, no choice, in the military! I m happy that over the weekend 8 Key Clubbers stacked my firewood, and I got very tired just watching them! $ Jim Rogers: Congratulations to the Scouts and their great program! Scouting was the most important thing during my youth! $ Joe Behson: Happy to report that I sold my old place at Mt Snow, so I now only have one to take care of! $ Sue Jensky: I took another trip up Grafton Mountain to the Fire Tower, and the colors were gorgeous! $ Randy Wheeler: I m so very proud of my scouts, and thank them for taking me along on that 50 mile hike! $ Bob Loveridge: What a great program! Thanks to the Latham Club for sponsoring them! $ Jon Schneider: If you ever want to take a 50 mile hike, make sure Randy s with you he s the greatest planner! DOOR PRIZE, provided by Randy Wheeler, was won by John Swartwout from Latham Kiwanis! 50/50 for $28 was won by Skip Patton! PROGRESSIVE 50/50, worth $ this week, confounded Rose Metchick who picked the King of..spades from the 45 cards! Close, but no cigar!
