1 May 2011 Volume #10 No. 5 Spring Drive Edition II 9:30 am Sunday, May 22, 2011 P.O. Box 1234, Gainesville, GA TH Annual Jags And Friends Picnic Roswell Area Park Saturday, June 18, 2011 British Motorcar Day Saturday, May 15, 2011 Berry College, Rome, GA Submitted by: Dave Kirkman The honor marque this year is the Jaguar E-Type as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this iconic sports car. Being that we are the primary Jaguar club in Georgia with a large collection of E-Types this is our opportunity to come out and celebrate these wonderful cars, support our club, and make a donation to worthwhile charities at the same time. Berry College is located just north of downtown Rome on US 27. Most of us will be taking I-75 to the Cartersville area and then US 441 to the Rome area bypass (see attached map). There will be signs this year directing you to both the college and the British Motorcar Day gathering. Driving Map on page 7 5TH Annual Jags And Friends Picnic Roswell Area Park Saturday, June 18, 2011 The North Georgia Jaguar Club s JAGS AND FRIENDS PICNIC has evolved into one of our most popular events. What better way to spend a late spring day than in a beautiful park setting with good friends, wonderful cars, and a catered lunch? This event is unique on our calendar in that everyone is encouraged to invite a friend with an interesting car to come and share the day with us. Besides Jags our invited friends bring a wide variety of other special and interesting automobiles ranging from Alfa s to Zagato s that always add to the day s festivities. Brian Hernan has made reservations for us to have the two shelters just off the parking area at the far end of the park. We have gathered here the past several years to display our cars and will do so again this year. Brian has also made arrangement with SMOKEJACK to cater our barbeque lunch again this year. The $10.00 price per person is the same as last year and includes a barbeque sandwich, side, and drink. Our club will also provide water and an assortment of soft drinks. The event is from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm and the Roswell Area Park provides a relaxed environment to visit with club members and friends and share in a catered lunch. Entry forms and a map to the park will be included in the June issue of the NGJC s Newsletter. Spring Drive Edition II 9:30 am Sunday, May 22, 2011 Submitted by Dave Kirkman The First Spring Drive received rave reviews by all who attended for the choice of back country roads and the beautiful countryside that we traveled through. Although we are going to use some of these roads for the Second Spring Drive this will be a completely different route. Our destination will be Clarksville for lunch (at a different location) and then on for a visit at the Mark of the Potter. We will meet in the parking lot behind Wendy s located at the intersection of GA 400 and Hwy 53 (going north on GA 400 cross Hwy 53 and Wendy s will be immediately on your RIGHT.see attached map). We will gather at 9:30 am with a leave time of 9:45am. If you know you are going please RSVP with me at ( or kirkmandav1@aol.com) so I can let the Restaurant know how many to anticipate for Driving Map on page 7 NGJC 2011 PICNIC ENTRY FORM Saturday, June 18th Name: PRESIDENT S CORNER by Pat Harmon Your North Georgia Jaguar Club has hit the road in fine fashion this Spring and the fun is just beginning. In early April we held our Spring slalom races at Chicopee Woods and all had a great time. We were even treated to a second venue on the site with the Peach State Mounted Shooters Competition. All in all, a very noisy scene with the Jags roaring and the pistols shooting. Then on April 16th, our old RallyMaster, Dave Kirkman, outdid himself by treating us to one of the best drives we ve been on. Over thirty NGJC rs toured some really neat (and curvy) roads winding up for lunch in Clarksville. Watch your newsletter because we may very well do a similar trip the end of this month. Also scheduled this month is the Annual British Motorcar Day at Berry College in Rome, Georgia. This year the Jaguar is the featured marque so you won t want to miss this display of over 200 British cars. Finally, please keep your eye on our website...www. ngjc.us. We are in the process of adding descriptions to our event calendar so you won t have to rely totally on our newsletter for information. You may also want to check out our club regalia for sale on our website. These items are all sold at our cost as a service to our membership. That s all for now...see you on the road!!! 4 New York Auto Show Reminiscent of 1961 Who is that guy driving Dick Maury s red OTS and why does it take four guys and a gun to look after Wayne Phears 1961 E-Type? Of course, it is New York City after all and a group of first-class E-Types were on hand mid-april for the auto show where Jaguar Cars was commemorating the introduction to America of the brand-new E-Type in 1961 at the very same New York Auto Show. Things got off to a good start Wednesday, April 20th when a parade of E-Types left the Javits Convention Center to the IAC Building for a cocktail reception after Jaguar showed off it 2012 XFR-S. On hand were celebrities like actress Megan Fox of the Transformer movies joining Ian Callum, Jaguar s chief designer these days. Providing a bit of artistic flavor, Simon Doonan of Barneys New York showed off a wood and foam model of an E-Type decorated with vintage images of the car and photos from the early 1960s. With all the gilded tributes to the classic Jaguar E-Type taking place this season for its 50th anniversary, the unofficial homage featuring our local E-Types in the big city are from dashing designer Duncan Quinn who celebrates the sheer style of the things. Quinn, whose ethos is Savile Row meets Rock & Roll, with influences ranging from classic Michael Caine flicks and Sean Connery as Bond to 60s motorsports legends, makes suits that look like they re tailored to conceal weapons. The DQ man is literally dressed to kill. What else could he possibly drive but an E-Type? Page 4
5 Spring Slalom Two for the Price of One You could watch the Jaguars slalom or you could watch the horses slalom because both events were held at the Chicopee Woods Agricultural Center in Gainesville, Sunday, April 3rd. Of course, with the Western Shooting Horse Competition, the horsemen and women get to carry guns and shoot them, but we don t allow that on our slalom course. It is nice to have both events because we get some additional observers and the concession stand is open during the day. I guess the story of our competition is that Jim O Dell continues to threaten with quick times in Dick Maury s 1971 E-Type, even beating Dick s time this outing by a few fractions of a second. Our competition was one of the earliest sanctioned events for 2011 so there is not much data yet to make comparisons with other clubs competition. Jim also put up good numbers in his XJ6 Series III and wife Cathleen and daughter Cait participate, too. Pat Harmon and John Baxa brought their 73 E-Types though they are in different classes because of modifications to Pat s car. We also saw James Potter in his 68 E-Type FHC and Richard Tole in his 86 black XJS fight the clock. Non-Jaguar competitors included Gordon Pratt in his Toyota Celica and Luke Carretto driving his Mazda Miata. Thanks go to Dick Maury for organizing and setting up and also to Greg Carretto for timing and scoring individual runs. Weather Threatens, But Only Delays Spring Drive We had a few new twists to the 2011 edition Revision 1 of the North Georgia Jaguar Club Spring Drive in the form of some roads untraveled in previous outings. We headed in a more easterly direction this time with a destination at a marvelous luncheon spot The Attic in beautiful downtown Clarksville. But first we had to sweat out the weather situation a couple of days before the event. As is usual for the Georgia springtime there is the possibility of severe weather systems threatening to thwart Dave Kirkman s carefully laid-out plans. And this time was no different with heavy thunderstorms in many areas the Friday before the drive. But after posting a message on our web site that the drive would only have a two-hour delay Continued on page 6 Continued on page 5 Page 5
6 Continued from page 5 Weather Threatens, But Only Delays Spring Drive we launched the drive under blue, sunny skies and moderate temperatures for what turned out to be a great trip over some new territory. Of course, this underscores the importance of being nimble with plans and also of keeping the organizers and participants informed up to the last minute. So, it is a good idea to let Dave know if you plan to come on the drive and keep watch for last minute changes at in case alterations do arise. Page 6

This year s event will start June 11 at Coker Tires Headquarters in Chattanooga, TN and finish at Hemmings Headquarters in Bennington, VT. The Great Race started on the square in Marietta on one occasion and Olympic Park on another and both proved to be very exciting automotive spectaculars. There was no specific start times listed on their web site at If you are interested in attending I would suggest that you contact Coker Tires directly and inquire about more specific information. Continued from front cover Spring Drive Edition II 9:30 am Sunday, May 22, 2011 Submitted by Dave Kirkman lunch. You are always welcome last minute so don t hesitate to come. We have a rain date scheduled for the next Sunday should there be inclement weather on the morning of the 22nd. The final stop was another well-equipped garage with four new cars an S-Type, XJL, XKR and XF. We were able to see up-close some of the great safety features Chris talked about in the classroom and he demonstrated the body-hugging seat belts that vary tension based on driving conditions. This was a very impressive and muchappreciated look at the technical side of Jaguar s technical prowess and a great way to spend a rainy Saturday morning. Page 7
