1 April 2015 Volume 40 Issue 4 SpringFest 2015 is just about 3 weeks away! But before talking about SpringFest I want to thank Bill, Jeannette and Wanda for hosting our March Meeting and Swap Meet. Lunch was great and we held our first Corvair Atlanta BOD meeting for 2015 (it began at about 10:30 am that morning). Attendance and weather were both good, I m not sure about the weather but certainly the meal was a factor driving good attendance. Thanks to everyone who showed up on the 21st. SpringFest 2015 and I m guilty, I have not yet registered for this awesome Corvair Show (sorry Lillian). Remember if you register by 07-April-2015 you will be entered in a drawing to win $35.00 I will mail my registration soon. Corvair Atlanta members are asked to bring the following to SpringFest: a) A case of name brand Diet soda b) CAI Women; 2 desserts c) CAI Men; 2 bags of name brand regular chips The three Corvair Clubs that host SpringFest have purchased a new Cooker for the event. It has been given a test drive and is said to perform well. With the amount of food prepared for Spring-Fest it is very important to have reliable equipment. On Saturday, 09-May-2015, Vulcan Corvairs Enthusiasts (VCE) will be hosting the Second annual Southeast Corvair Picnic at Lake Guntersville State Park, Alabama. Twenty rooms have been reserved at the Wyndham in Albertsville, AL for this event. Hope to see all our members at SpringFest this year! -Tom The President s Corner Meeting Minutes Page 2-3 Classified Ads Page 5 News and Notes Page 3 About Us Page 8 Calendars Page 4 Celebrations Page 5
2 Meeting Minutes Corvair Atlanta Meeting Minutes The meeting was held at Bill and Jeanette Rudolph s house in Conyers and included lunch and a swap meet. Your Board of Directors met at 10:30 --Springfest was briefly discussed. ----It seems that the basics are in place, but, more volunteers could be used in a variety of areas. Contact any Corvair Atlanta officer to volunteer your time. ----The need for a very careful accounting of Festhall tables and supplies was discussed again. ----It was also decided that we should have a show schedule and any necessary last minute changes to same posted at the registration area in the Festhall. Steps will be taken to make sure this happens. ----It was felt that more mention of local show sponsors should be included during the show. It was suggested that local businesses that have supplied door prizes or other support should be listed for all to see and perhaps mentioned during the Friday hospitality dinner so that attendees will know which businesses have helped our cause and can perhaps shop them on Saturday. --Desire or not to increase membership was discussed. It was generally felt that increasing membership with new active members was a good goal. The only solid idea that was brought forward was that more exposure of our Corvairs to the automotive oriented public might help us toward this goal. The consensus was that attendance of local multi-make shows and cruise-ins was likely the easiest way to accomplish this. This has been done in the past in an organized manner. We the board think it may be a good idea to try to organize this again. The idea being to pick a local show and ask members to attend it. It would be nice to have an activities director to choose what shows we should try to attend. The membership will be approached during the general meeting to see if anyone is interested in taking the reins on this. The general meeting was called to order at 1:00PM after a very nice lunch of hot dogs, sides, chips, drinks, and a most excellent strawberry shortcake desert. Thanks Jeanette etal. for another fine lunch! --Springfest was discussed. ----The fact that the Springfest show has purchased a new grille for show and club use was discussed. The old borrowed unit had become unreliable. ----It was stated that more volunteers are always needed and members were asked to step up if they would like to lend a hand. --Desire to increase club exposure and perhaps gain a few more active members was discussed. Attending local multi-make car shows and cruise-ins was thought to be a good way to do this. It was asked if anyone wanted to volunteer to be an activities director to help coordinate these efforts. No volunteer stepped forward during the meeting. --A 50/50 drawing was held after the selling of $66 worth of tickets. Dick Berger went home with an extra $33. Congrats Dick. (Continued on page 3) 2
3 Meeting Minutes (Continued from page 2) -- Ken and Judy Arnold related a story about what happened to them at their house one afternoon. In a nutshell, a couple guys came by at midday asking for yard maintenance work. After being turned down by Judy and then Ken (after they did not leave the premises right away), one of them tackled Ken and pulled a gun on him. A struggle ensued during which Ken got partial control of the handgun and discharged a round into the ground. This got Judy s attention and Ken hollered for her to call 911 and get a gun from the house. She called a neighbor to call 911 and returned to the doorway with their 9MM pistol. The second assailant headed toward Judy who pointed her gun at him and told him she would shoot if he did not stop. He got the message after she got a little more directive the third time and he turned and ran. Ken was still on the ground wrestling with the other thug and the thug s gun. Ken told Judy to shoot the thug. She discharged the weapon into the ground nearby. This got his attention and he then ran off. A while later the cops finally showed up (time frames of nearly 45mins after being called were mentioned) and took a report. It goes to show us that this can happen to anyone, even in broad daylight, and that we should all take steps to protect ourselves. The police cannot protect us in a timely fashion. The police related that there is a trend of such attacks on baby boomers and retired folks due to the fact that most have a little money and some valuables amassed. Thank goodness in this case no one was seriously injured. --Kelly Parker stated that there are a number of Corvair items left in the Kirkman estate. There are a number of engines including at least one turbo motor, and a number of misc. parts. For a list of items and availability contact Kelly Parker at The meeting was attended by the following people: Ted Fahrenthold Earl and Lindy Lively Dick Berger Kelly Parker Russ T Huleen Billy Cannon Tom Constantine Tom Rabb Ken and Judy Arnold Wayne Whitmire Dan Terry Al and Paula Hilderbrand Robert and Mikey Birkinbine Lanny Milbrandt Bill and Jeanette Rudolph Wanda Cook Nolan Grant 3
