2 KUTCH Kutch literally means something which intermittently becomes wet and dry. A large part of this district is known as 'Rann of Kutch' which is a shallow wetland that submerges in water during the rainy season and becomes a sandy dry desert during other seasons. Locally known as 'Safed Rann', this white desert is famous for its marshy salt pans which become snow white after the shallow water dries up each season before the monsoon rains. Kutch is also very famous for ecologically important Banni grasslands with their seasonal marshy wetlands which form the outer belt of the Rann of Kutch. Kutch district is inhabited by various groups and communities. Many of these have reached this region after centuries of migration from neighbouring regions of Marwar (Western Rajasthan), Sindh, Afghanistan and even further. Even today, one can find various nomadic, semi nomadic and artisan groups living in Kutch. 3 KUTCH - THE ECONOMY Historically Kutch was not considered a very happening tourist destination, due to its location and submerged geography. The situation seemed to have worsened after the disastrous Kutch earthquake in But in the next decade, the economy took an almost miraculous jumpstart due to the intense efforts of the, then CM of Gujarat - Shri Narendra Modi. Kutch today is a growing economic and industrial hub in one of India's fastest growing states - Gujarat. Its location on the far western edge of India has resulted in the commissioning of three major ports Gandhidham, Kandla and Mundra. These ports get most of the advantage of Gulf and Europe via sea route. With good quality road ways connectivity; a large part of the growth came after the intense development by the state government as part of 2001 earthquake relief. Moreover, due to the existence of three major ports, transportation as a business has also rampantly thrived. Since old times, the people of Kutch have formed the backbone of trade between Gujarat mainland and Sindh. After the formation of Pakistan this trade freezed for a while, but due to the inception of the Kandla Kutch is mineral rich region with very large reserves of Lignite, Bauxite, Bentonite, Gypsum among other minerals. Kutch got tax break for Industries for 15 years after the major earthquake on January 26, Kutch also houses the cement plant of Sanghi Industries Ltd, which is India's single largest Cement Plant. The company is now planning to increase the capacity at its Abdasa location plant from 3 9 million tons per annum. By 2015, the company plans to produce 20 million tons of cement. Kandla is yet another major port, considered as a gateway to North. It is managed by the Other major Industries in Kutch are: Tata Power's first 4000 MW Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) of India. Adani Power has a 3300 MW plant and is on track to complete the installation of 10,000 MW projects by The other major companies are the Welspun Group of Companies, Ajanta Clocks, Orpat, JayPee Cements, Electrotherm, SAL Group, AMW Jindal Steel,Anchor and many more.
