1 KATHERINE AUSTRALIA SEPTEMBER 2014 FULL PROGRAM

2 INTRODUCTION TO WOW The WOW Women of the World Festival is a global festival originating at London's Southbank Centre, that celebrates the formidable strength and inventiveness of girls and women, where people of all ages and backgrounds can applaud their achievements but also examine the obstacles that prevent them from achieving their full potential. WOW is for everyone, not a women-only event. In May 2013, the Southbank Centre launched WOW in Australia as part of the Sydney Writers Festival, celebrating the work, achievements and stories of Australian women. In September 2013, WOW came to the Northern Territory town of Katherine. There are also WOW festivals happening in New York and Baltimore, India, Brisbane and across the UK. Now by popular demand and after the success of WOW in 2013, WOW Katherine is being presented for the second time. MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER As the Northern Territory s Minister for Women s Policy I welcome you all to the second year of this important international festival held in Katherine. WOW Katherine is a fantastic opportunity for women from all corners of the Northern Territory, to join together and work with women from all corners of the world. The festival allows women to share their experiences, to heal and to learn from one another. WOW Katherine allows women to see themselves as part of a global network of strong women striving for change and equality. I congratulate the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Art and Culture Centre in their efforts in securing this fantastic and inspiring international festival for a second year. I wish each and every one of you success and warm regards for your current and future endeavours. Hon. Bess Nungarrayi Price, MLA Member for Stuart and Minister for Women's Policy ACKNOWLEDGEMENT WOW Katherine wishes to acknowledge that our event takes place on the land of the Jawoyn, Dagoman and Wardaman peoples. We wish to pay respect to the Traditional Owners of this country, past and present. 2

3 MESSAGE FROM THE PATRON We welcome with enthusiasm the Women of the World Festival to the beautiful region of Katherine, home to Nitmiluk National Park and Katherine Gorge. I am delighted and very honoured to be Patron of a global festival that celebrates women s achievements and encourages women to form enduring and healthy friendships and networks. We know life in our regions has many wonderful advantages; lifestyle and being part of a caring community are just two that come to mind. We also know there are challenges. This is why it is important women who live in regional and remote centres have the opportunity to come together and have meaningful conversations about their hopes and concerns. And there is so much value in sharing our experiences. What a unique and precious opportunity for the community of Katherine. I attended this Festival in It was a pleasure to participate in such a well organised event, enjoyed by so many. I look forward to the privilege of meeting and listening to women of extraordinary diversity. On behalf of the Northern Territory, I express gratitude to the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre for hosting the festival. Sally Thomas AC Administrator of the Northern Territory 3

4 MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTORS Jude Kelly OBE Artistic Director, Southbank Centre, and Founder of WOW Women of the World I am thrilled that WOW is happening in Katherine for a second year, and so inspired and invigorated in the knowledge that women and girls from across Katherine will come together again to share stories and convictions. I am looking forward to being part of those conversations, and learning more about Katherine women past and present. Cath Bowdler Director, Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre The opportunity to host the WOW Katherine Festival in 2013 represented a significant milestone for Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre in only its first eighteen months of operation.
