2 Visual arts 42nd Katherine Prize 23 JUNE 2 SEPTEMBER The annual Katherine Prize encourages Indigenous and non-indigenous residents of the Northern Territory to develop their art practice and showcase their skill to the region. Awards include the non acquisitive: $5,000 Brian & Jeanette Lambert Art Award, $2,000 Dr Peter & Kathleen Short Craft Award, the Godinymayin Youth Award and the People s Choice Award. Pennyrose Wiggins, Roadtrip (detail), winner Katherine Prize Punuku Tjukurpa 8 SEPTEMBER 21 OCTOBER An exhibition celebrating the stories and Law of Anangu culture (Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands) told through intricate carvings and artefacts. Punuku Tjukurpa is the first touring exhibition of artworks from the Maruku Arts archive based at Mutitjulu, near Uluru in the Northern Territory. Injalak Fabric adressed 27 OCTOBER 9 DECEMBER Injalak Arts in West Arnhem Land has recently launched Get On It, inviting professional designers, dressmakers and students to create fashion garments with Injalak Arts textiles. This exhibition is a selection of 20 garments from the Get On It program using contemporary cultural designs printed on cotton twill, linen and silk. 3 Performances Katherine Tales Tall, Twisted and True CELEBRATING TERRITORY DAY SATURDAY 1 JULY, KATHERINE SHOWGROUND 5.00pm gates open Katherine Tales Tall, Twisted and True tells the story of Territory Day in quintessential and wacky Katherine (Big Rivers) style. Based on a vaudeville theme, the Tall, Twisted and True stories are told through song, music, comedy and satire. Laugh and sing the night away during this large-scale community event, followed by all-time favourite, the fireworks! A Northern Territory Government event held in conjunction with the Katherine Town Council. Produced by Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre. Drag Queen Stole my Dress Gillian English WEDNESDAY 19 JULY 7.30PM This autobiographical tale from Canada s comedienne Gillian English tells the story of love, loss, casino showgirls, Australians and a solitary drag queen with kleptomania. Coming to Katherine from the Darwin Fringe Festival, Gillian has hit the stage in New York, London, Canada and nationally. Delicious and triumphant! 4 A Midsummer Night s Dream Melbourne City Ballet A SHOW FOR ALL THE FAMILY FRIDAY 28 JULY 7.30PM Melbourne City Ballet returns to Katherine with their newest season performance; a magical, neoclassical ballet interpretation of the William Shakespeare classic, A Midsummer Night s Dream. With a full cast of talented artists, dazzling costumes and beautiful sets, Artistic Director Michael Pappalardo will take audiences on a journey to the borders of Shakespeare s Athens-Fairyland to experience magic, mischief and love. Recommended for people over 5 years. Running time 85 mins with a 15 minute interval. Saltbush A SHOW FOR AGES 4+ THURSDAY 3 AUGUST 11.00AM AND 5.30PM Filled with dance, music, songs, stories and a spectacular light show, Saltbush follows two friends on a journey through the Australian landscape as seen through Indigenous culture and language; from river country to an urban landscape, through desert and sea. Truly unforgettable and filled with opportunities to interact with the artists during the performance, this internationally acclaimed show is a must-see event for ages 4 12 years and families. 5 a show you just can t miss Courier Mail, Australia Troppo Circa SATURDAY 12 AUGUST TIME TBC Internationally renowned Brisbane-based company Circa creates powerful circus that challenges, thrills and delights. Back in Katherine for the third successive year, Circa presents Troppo. On a deserted island far, far away a rag tag circus troupe is washed up on a beach. Dazed and unfamiliar with their colourful new world, they venture into the island with often hilarious results. Will they make it off the island, or will the tropical, warm climate make them all go a little troppo? Created by Yaron Lifschitz with the Circa Ensemble. Running time 85 minutes with no interval. Circa acknowledges the assistance of the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding advisory body and the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. This project has been assisted by the Australian government through the Ministry for the Arts Catalyst-Australian Arts and Culture Fund. Poetry in Action TUESDAY 5 SEPTEMBER CONTACT GODINYMAYIN FOR TIMES Poetry in Action is Australia s premier Theatre-in-Education company dedicated to bringing poetry to life through performance. Poetry in Action makes poetry fun, accessible and easier to study. Teacher s packs are provided with every school booking. Suitable for year 7 12 students. Running time minutes with no interval. In Between Two Joelistics SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 7.30PM Experience the storytelling, music and performance of Joelistics Joel Ma, and Sietta s James Mangohig as they explore the soundtrack of their mixed heritage. Beautifully enhanced by rare movie footage, family photographs and original live music, In Between Two navigates the rich territory between two cultures and two generations. Running time 70 minutes with no interval.

6 KSPACE Community Gallery The KSPACE Community Gallery program is an opportunity for emerging Katherine region Indigenous and non-indigenous artists to showcase their work in gallery setting. 7 Venue hire The auditorium at Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre is available to hire for forums, conferences and meetings. Facilities include: sound, lighting and audiovisual equipment for hire, cabled and wireless internet access, power points and an outdoor terrace. See our website for more details. Please note we are obligated to our community to comply with responsible service of alcohol guidelines and care for significant cultural objects which are in our care. Therefore we do not hire our auditorium for social events. Shop Our retail space offers a range of local handmade gifts, books, exhibition catalogues and works of art from regional NT art centres.
