1 ST JOHN S PREPARATORY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER No. 1 2 February 2006 Dear Parents and Boys A very special welcome back, especially to all our new boys and their respective families. Welcome also to our Upper I s who join us from the Pre-Preparatory. Please remember it is very important that your boys are happy and enjoying their school days. If there are any issues or problems in this regard, please contact us! I wish all our St John s Community a wonderful 2006! Herewith the latest Prep news STAFF NEWS I also extend a welcome to new staff: Mr Lees, who is our new Deputy Head (Extra Curricular and Discipline), replacing Mr Macaulay; and finally Mr Tucker, who is reading for a BEd degree through Unisa and will be completing his internship with us. CURRICULUM UPDATE The Grade 7 ISASA Gauteng English Curriculum Development Meeting was held on Wednesday 1 February in the Jeffrey Auditorium. Nicky Sulter gave an interesting and dynamic presentation on Literature Circles at St John s. Mrs Taylor, who has taken over from Mrs Herold; Mrs de Oliviera, who will teach in Lower II; Miss Upton, who joins the Upper II teachers; Mr Gunning, who will manage the Design and Technology department; Try to be gentle with yourself, and with others when things go wrong Anonymous Page 1

The D&T Department is looking for various scrap materials for projects throughout the year. Please could all parents keep these items in mind: all cardboard boxes from computer boxes to cereal boxes, all plastic bottles, jars, plastic containers, tins, bottle caps and lids, toilet and roller-towel rolls, material rolls, material. Almost everything can be recycled. If you think the D&T department might be able to use it, please give it a rinse if necessary and send it with your son to be dropped off at the D&T centre. 4 Dear Parents and Musicians January 2006 SUPPER AND SONG 2006 This popular event will feature the Choir, Wind Band, Jazz Band, String Ensemble and Pop Group featuring St John s most talented ensembles. This is an evening of good food, great company and musical fun. Dates: Friday 3 March 2006 Saturday 4 March 2006 Time: Venue 18h30 for 19h00 Darragh Hall Tickets are R85.00 per head. Tables can seat 10. You are welcome to bring your own wine a cash bar will also be available. Payment must be made in cash or by cheque (made payable to Council of St John s College) and handed in to the Music Department (between 08h00 and 13h00). Bookings close on 22 February Boys involved in performances must meet their ensembles at 18h15. Choirboys may leave after 19h30, unless they are involved with other ensembles. Ensembles will be given a light supper (except for choir boys). Your son may join you at a table once they have finished, but will need to purchase a ticket. We look forward to seeing you!... 5 Dear Parents Scouting can add hugely to a child's life skills and experiences and as a parent I'm happy to recommend it to others. To this end we would like to invite your child/children to come along to a few meetings and see if they'd like to join us. CUBS / SCOUTS Does your child / children find hiking, camping and the outdoors cool? Why not let them join Cubs / Scouts and do it more often? They can try it first and then decide. First Kengray-B.K. meets at 385 Highland Road Kensington, between Queens and Royal Oak Streets. If your child / children are already seven years old come along on Friday at 17h30 to 19hOO for a Cubs Pack meeting. If your child / children are eleven years old come on Friday from 19hOO until 21h15 for a Scout Troop meeting. They need not have been a Cub to join Scouts. For more details contact Joan Marsh on ; for other areas ask the Scout Shop on As a matter of interest the B in our title is from Belgravia, which started up in so technically we'll soon have a centenary to celebrate. Scout Groups tend to wax and wane along with their local community over time, so incorporation of older groups is fairly common. For a bit of background on Cubs / Scouts As the garrison commander besieged in Mafeking during the Boer War, Baden-Powell apparently made use of 12-year olds as messengers. Their eagerness and ability inspired him and on his return to England he started the Scout movement in Cubs were added later, no doubt to accommodate younger siblings who thought this looked like a lot of fun. As a world-wide movement it still holds international Jamborees - the next one is due in 2007 in England, no doubt to celebrate the centenary of its foundation. Having kept up to date there is even an annual Jamboree-on the-internet which links Scouts to others in all parts of the world. The other sign-of-the-times is that there are now Girls Scouts as well as Girl Guides in South Africa. 11 INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS SWIMMING Well done to several of our swimmers who participated in the 1km Victoria Lake Germiston swim on 15 January. In the category Boys 13 years and under and Men s 31 and older, they were placed as follows: Merrick Stevenson 17 th position 0:16:09 (He was the youngest swimmer in the first 52 positions) Michael Cloete 66 th position 0:18:48 Roarke Olver 88 th position 0:19:37 Stephen de Souza 177 th position 0:22:57 Well done to Mr Vernon Cloete, father of Michael, who was placed 265 th overall in a time of 0:26:24. Congratulations to Merrick Stevenson, who swam in the Central Gauteng Championships from January Over two days, he swam in 15 events and won 11 gold medals and 3 silver medals. On 29 January he swam in the Ekurhuleni Open Water Dam Swim at Germiston Lake. He won the 10 years and under category in 0:18.15 minutes. Well done to Roarke Olver who swam in the Ekurhuleni Open Water Dam Swim at Germiston Lake on 29 January. He came 7 th overall in the Girls and boys under ten years event and 3 rd in the Boys overall under 10 years event in an excellent time of 0:18:59 (Gold Medal and prize money). We also congratulate Roarke on qualifying to participate in the SSA Level 2 Gala from 7 to 11 March 2006 in Newcastle. We wish him all the best in this upcoming event! Well done to Stephen de Souza who swam in the Ekurhuleni 1 200m open water dam swim on 29 January. Stephen came in 6 th position in a time of 0:25:03 (Silver Medal). Stephen also participated in the 1km ERM swim at Cinderella Dam on 8 January. He was positioned 6 th in the category Boys 13 years and under with a time of 0:21:15. Well done to Michael Cloete for qualifying to participate in the SSA Level 2 Gala from 7 to 11 March 2006 in Newcastle. We wish him everything of the best in this upcoming event! 12 PARISH OF HOUGHTON ST JOHN S The St John's community is reminded that a church service is held every Sunday at 09hOO in the Crypt Chapel. Although we are the Parish of Houghton, St John's, we are extremely blessed to retain Bishop Duncan Buchanan as our Minister, and he is more than ably assisted from time to time by Jeremy Jacobs. As a team, their spiritual leadership would be hard to surpass. At present we have approximately forty five regular communicants. In addition, a Sunday School and Youth Group caters for children between 3 and 18 years. These groups run during in the sermon in the Community Room adjacent to the Crypt Chapel. What characterises us as a Parish is the sense of closeness which originates from our connections to St John's (although a fair number of parishioners have no connection whatsoever), our focus on the family, our commitment to St Christopher's Home, Mother Teresa's and Princess Alice and our warmth and commitment to each other. If you are looking for a spiritual home for you or your family, this might just be the answer. Please give us a try! Page 12

18 Chasing Tails Once a big cat observed a kitten chasing its tail and asked why it was doing that. The kitten replied. I have learned that a cat s purpose is to be happy and I have also learned that happiness is in my tail and when I catch it, I shall be happy. To which the old cat said, I too have studied life and I too have discovered that happiness is what makes life worthwhile. I also know that happiness is in my tail.
