A program of the Rotary Foundation ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT 9780 AUSTRALIA VISIT OF GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE TEAM from DISTRICT 4520 Brazil February 28th February 26th March 2010
GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE Goals and Objectives. GSE is a unique vocational, educational and cultural exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and women in their initial years of professional life. The program provides travel grants for the exchange of teams between paired districts in different countries where participants are provided with travel, accommodation and meals by host families The program is designed to develop professional and leadership skills so that young adults can, on their return home, address the needs of their communities and an increasingly global workplace and enhance Rotary s worldwide mission. It includes: Vocational Visits to provide opportunities to observe vocations as practiced in another country and impact on team members long-term careers through the reciprocal exchange of ideas in their respective fields. Cultural Experiences - allow participants to study another country and its people, language and institutions through an organized and meaningful host program, which promote the appreciation of cultural diversity. Fellowship Opportunities encourage team members and hosts to meet, communicate, and live with each other in a spirit of fellowship and goodwill to consider each other s problems, aspirations, community concerns and foster lasting friendships and international understanding. Rotarian Involvement offer Rotarians specific, practical and meaningful opportunities for international service by providing young professionals in their formative years with a different perspective on their vocation in another country and culture. 2
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL Welcome to our GSE Team from District 4520 Brazil Governor Chris and Christine - District 9780 On behalf of all of the Rotarians, partners, and friends of Rotary in District 9780 I am delighted to have the opportunity to welcome the members of the Group Study Exchange team from District 4520 Brazil to Australia and to our District. To team leader Roberto and team members Judmila, Andreia, Sharlyne, and Paulo I extend a warm welcome to our District and I am sure all of the Rotarians in District 9780 will join with me in endeavouring to ensure that your visit is as rewarding and enjoyable as possible. Our District consists of 58 clubs and nearly 2,200 Rotarians covering a large area encompassed by the Western half of Victoria and part of southeast South Australia. It is an eclectic mix of rural areas dedicated to farming and primary production activities, and regional centres with a variety of industrial and commercial activities. Tourism is also very important to our District and you will find a diversity of sweeping coastlines and pristine beaches. National parks and forests, wineries, lakes and mountains, as well as the iconic Great Ocean Road that heads west to South Australia. The Group Study Exchange Program is a unique opportunity for a cultural and vocational exchange for young business and professional men and women so you may study our institutions and way of life, observe your own vocations as they are practised here, exchange ideas, and most importantly develop personal and professional relationships. This opportunity to exchange ideas and develop an understanding of another country s culture and way of life is a small but extremely important part of the Rotary Foundations mission to advance world understanding, good will and peace. I am sure that DGN Brian Trenery has planned for you an interesting itinerary that will take you to a variety of locations throughout our District and enable you to enjoy some of the hospitality of our Clubs as well as providing you with rewarding vocational experiences. I thank you for being part of the Group Study Exchange Program in my year as Governor for District 9780, and I hope it will be a memorable time in your life. 3
GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE TO OUR HOSTS AND HOST CLUBS It is vital that throughout the visit the local coordinator liaises with the Team Leader, the District Coordinator and the local coordinator of the next part of the visit. The success of the Exchange program depends largely on those of you who are hosting team members in your homes. Flexibility and punctuality will be your assets during the period you are hosting one of our guests. The activities have been planned so that diversity and interest will prevail throughout the itinerary. We expect that daily activities will follow the itinerary developed by the committee in conjunction with the hosting Rotary Clubs. It is important that at the end of each day s activities, those for the following day are reviewed and suitably confirmed in respect of times and meeting places. It is asked that hosts phone the local coordinator to confirm each day s program. The GSE Team Leader should be informed as to when uniforms should be worn. The itinerary is designed to allow the guest sufficient free time for rest and relaxation. Please ensure that this time remains free. As hosts you are in the best position to ensure that your guest has sufficient sleep and that there are not problems with special diet, laundry, health etc. Above all, your guest will appreciate the host family following a normal routine. DAILY HOST CLUB RESPONSIBILITY It is the responsibility of day hosts to return their guests to host families at the end of the day s activities. When no Rotary meeting is planned, the guest should be returned to host homes in sufficient time for the evening meal. The Rotary Foundation requires Rotarians to accompany members of teams while traveling throughout the District. It is also important to note that the Foundation does not allow members of visiting teams to travel in any non-commercial aircraft, operate any motor vehicle or travel outside the District without prior approval. 4
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL TO OUR GSE GUESTS It is our earnest desire that your stay in our District will be enjoyable, rewarding and memorable, and that you will make many friends. Our responsibilities to you are as follows: a. To provide all travel, housing and meals for your entire visit. This will be done by individual Rotarians who host you (i.e. host families), Rotary Clubs, non-rotary invitations or by direct payment by the District to hotels etc. when approved. b. Hosts will attend to your laundry requirements. If your hosts accidentally overlook this, you should remind them of your needs. c. We do not wish you to remain silent and suffer the inconvenience. d. Personal expenses such as bar bills, toilet articles, haircuts, gifts, clothing etc are the responsibility of the team member. If there is anything you do not understand please ask your hosts. e. They will be delighted with your interest and be very pleased to assist. We Australians are very open and friendly and will happily discuss any aspects of our way of life with you. Please enjoy your stay with us. Please note that as you move around our District, you will receive a more comprehensive program at each of your stops. This will reflect refinements to the program and any prevailing conditions in each of the parts of the District. For example, parts of our District are heavily forested and it would be unwise during extreme weather conditions or during bushfire alert to get too far into the bush. Similarly, if swimming at beaches, it is imperative that you seek guidance on which areas are patrolled by lifesavers. 5
