Naankuse Rudie von Vuuren, brother of Pieter von Vuuren, welcomes McMinnville Breakfast Rotary Team & family to Naankuse Wildlife Santuary 3
Naankuse Our first week, we got to stay at an investors house. It was gorgeous and fun that we could all stay together. 4
Our Backyard This was the back yard view of our house. The water hole where the animals come at night is about ½ mile walk out our back door. 5
Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary As volunteers, we got to rescue animals, prepare their food, feed them, clean their areas, take them for walks, and build fences. Here we are off to work! 6
N/a ankuse Wildlife Sanctuary A recently built outside pavillion is where all 70 volunteers ate all of our meals, had meetings to get our assignments for the day and built a fire at night to keep warm and get to know the other volunteers who came from Australia, Europe, Africa and Asia. 7
Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary As volunteers, we made friends with the animals! Katy & Dave are enjoying their once in a lifetime experience with the Cheetahs! 8
Na ankuse Wildlife Sanctuary Marlice took us to see the cheetahs! Emily is enjoying them and they are enjoying the attention! Raised from an early age, these cheetahs can not go back to the wild. They are too tame! 9
Taking Baboons for a Walk One of our jobs was cleaning baboon areas, feeding them and walking them; which proved to be very interesting!! Liz, an animal behaviorist is shown on the left and Rachel on the right, both with baboons on our shoulders!
Animals Rule at Naankuse Emily loved the baby Baboons and kept one in her room for 3 days and nights, fed it by bottle and changed its diapers. Rayah on right caring for a baby Baboon.
Animals Rule at Naankuse A meerkat likes to walk around on Rayah s shoulder and an ostrich and warthogs are hanging out together as we perform Game Count!
Animals Rule at Naankuse Food Prep job also included preparing and feeding the carnivores too, which included wild dogs, cheetahs, lions. Often the meat was from a Zebra which are plentiful there. Neal & Dave almost got to go on the hunt for the meat.
Animals Rule at Naankuse Rayah got a rare opportunity while at Oregarumba, to go on a rescue mission 5 hours into the dessert for a baby Carakal whose mother had been killed. The farmer called Naankuse to come on the rescue. She held the baby all of the trip back but the baby died several hours later.
Daily work at N/a an kuse Katy & Rayah are sawing logs to make a ladder for the baboons to climb and then later in the day took the logs to make the ladder.
Daily work at N/a an kuse Pat s and Emily s job this day was to dig a hole for new fences for additional animal enclosures. See the tools provided. Staff did not like Neal s idea of having post hole diggers. They prefer the old ways.
Animals Rule at Naankuse After preparing the food for each set of animals and feeding them, this picture shows the cleanup process taking place!
Animals Rule at Naankuse The Cheetah s were so beautiful and have a wonderful home, thanks to Naankuse and Marlice and Rudie von Vuuren!
Na ankuse Scenery Na/an kuse is beautiful and the animals are very fortunate to have Marlice and Rudie von Vuuren!
STUDENTS ARRIVING AT THE CLEVER CUBS SCHOOL
CLEVER CUBS SCHOOL & WONDERFUL HILMA
KATY VOLUNTEERS AS TEACHER
The children love Katy & Dave
STUDENTS NEED UNIFORMS TO ATTEND PRIMARY SCHOOL Uniforms cost $4000N per year per student Clever Cubs has 6 students that will be ready to go to primary school in January but can t afford uniforms We need to help.. Only 2% of Bushman children go to school
Lifeline Clinic Five hours in the desert from Naankuse is the Lifeline Cliinic, owned and operated by Nannkuse to offer free medical services to the Bushman, who often walk up to 7 hours to get to the clinic! The medical staff are also volunteers with Dr. Rudie von Vuuren as the head of the clinic. We met Tim, a doctor volunteer from England.
Lifeline Clinic McMinnville Breakfast Rotary Club has a matching grant to install a water sanitation system to provide clean water to the clinic. In the desert, it only rains one time per year; gutters will catch water into barrels and a filter sanitation system will purify water for the clinic!
Orekaremba partners with N/a an kuse Theodore, new manager for Orekarumba, took Neal & I on trip to visit San Bushman and invited us to dinner with he & his wife. N/a an kuse also recently bought a winery and land across Nambia.
San Bushman move to N/a an kuse Marlice and Rudie have offered land to the San Bushman from the north to build a home and live in the style of 1200 years ago! They were so friendly and gracious to allow us into their home building activities! Pat will do a whole program on these people and their lifestyle.
San Bushman move to N/a an kuse The San Bushman are building their house in the using a Camphor Bush and will weave the straw shown in the background to make the roof and walls. This is where these sweet people will make their home!
Animals Rule at Naankuse Rayah got a rare opportunity while at Oregarumba, to go on a rescue mission 5 hours into the dessert for a baby Carakal whose mother had been killed. The farmer called N/a an kuse to come on the rescue. She held the baby all of the trip back but the baby died several hours later.
Meteorites in Winhoek Namibia The largest meteorite shower on earth happened in Namibia. The picture above shows an exhibit in Winhoek, Namibia explained to us by our guide. Shown from L to R: Dave Messina, Guide, Katy Denton, Neal Cox, Rayah Kirby Naankuse Namibia Africa Trip 31
Museum in Winhoek Namibia The National Museum told the history of Namibia from German rule to independence from German rule to local native black in The San Bushman suffered under both governments with only a few left alive. There are 5 languages spoken in this small country with German, English and Afrikan being the top three spoken. 32
Lutheran Church in Winhoek, Namibia The oldest church in Namibia is still in use today as the Lutheran Church. The sermon is still in German only. The original windows have all been restored.
Kalahari Sands Hotel Katy, Rayah, Neal & Dave celebrated Rachel s 71 Birthday on August 9 At the Kalahari Sands Hotel where we stayed in Winhoek. They surprised me with local made art.. A dress, necklace, apron, animal cup, a cover for my new suitcase, a cat statue and a pedicure and massage.. Yea!! Naankuse Namibia Africa Trip 34
Rotary Club in Winhoek Namibia Neal Cox, Pat Bigbee and Rachel Killebrew attended Rotary Club in Winhoek, Namibia and presented them with a McMinnville Breakfast Rotary Club Flag. Lunch was delicious at the NICE Restaurant & we met some interesting people. Naankuse Namibia Africa Trip 35
Stop over in London was great! Team has a day tour of London on stopover between Atlanta & Johannesburg. Westminister Abbey and Big Beb shown in background. Naankuse Namibia Africa Trip 36
Stop over in London was great! We had lunch in an Irish Pub in Chinatown in London and was served by a French waiter (shown above with Pat, Emily, Rachel and Neal. Tired after our long flight, this was a delightful and delicious treat! Naankuse Namibia Africa Trip 37
Stop over in London was great! Since we had been on the plane all night with no bath or sleep, the Queen did not invite us in for tea! We were disapointed but understood! Naankuse Namibia Africa Trip 38
Trip to N/a an kuse Namibia The trip to N/a an kuse was a once in a lifetime experience with wonderful animals, friends and family!
