4 LAKE TOBA TOURISM AUTHORITY Lake Toba Tourism Authority, established based on Presidential Decree 49 of 2016, is a professionally-managed Public Service Agency that is able to prioritize the synchronization and stakeholder coordination effort, which relates to investment and business of tourism industry, between Local Goverment, Central Government and Community in order to reach the target of 1 million international tourist visitors in 2019 The Lake Toba Tourism Authority has the following tasks: 1. To Facilitate Coordination, Synchronization, Planning and Development within Lake Toba Destination 2. To Conduct Planning, Development, and Management within Designated Development Area 3. 9 EXPORT Supplying the world s biggest markets Biggest export products % share to total export in 2017 Palm Oil (37%) North Sumatra is 2 nd biggest palm oil producer in the country. Products ranging from crude oil to finished products like soap and frying oil. Natural Rubber (11%) While price decline pressures production, rubber is still one of the biggest. Most of the export is in the form of rubber sheet, Arabica Coffee (4%) Our Arabica coffee (ie. Sidikalang) is among the most highly priced and sought coffee product in international market. Biggest market for export % share to total export in 2017 China (13%) The single biggest export market for North Sumatra s products, including palm oil products, chemical and rubber United States (12%) United States is the biggest importer for food and animals products. Other products include palm oil and rubber glove. India (8%) India is one of the biggest importer of palm oil products from North Sumatera, mostly in the form of CPO.

42 BALIGE CITY The Biggest City in Toba Balige is the capital city of the Toba Samosir Regency, and is known as one of the biggest town in the region surrounding Lake Toba. Nestled at the foot of Dolok Tolong (Tolong Hill), the city s weather tend to be cold and windy. The city is vibrant with daily activities, often centered at its most iconic building Balerong Balige that was built by the Dutch colonials in The building is home to the city s traditional market, which has been considered a trade hub from all over the Lake Toba region. Balige is also witness to one of Indonesia s most important events in history, the Declaration of Pulas War. It was here that Batak national hero King Sisimangaraja XII called everyone in the all of the Batak tribes to fight against the Dutch, who was then occupying the nation. 43 DESTINATIONS BATAK HISTORY & CULTURE MUSEUM Learn About Batak Culture Founded by former minister T.B. Silalahi ini 2011, the T.B. Silalahi Center Museum offers travellers a comprehensive experience to learn Batak culture and heritage in Indonesia. Consist of two main buildings, where one building showcasing a variety of artifacts from Batak tribes and culture, and another one used as a convention hall. The Batak museum is host to no less than 1,000 artifacts of Batak tribes from centuries ago, making this to be one of the most complete collection in all over Indonesia in terms of culture and heritage preservation. 44 ECOTOURISM AT TAMAN EDEN 100 The Charm of Toba s Virgin Rainforest Sprawled over an area of 40 hectares, Taman Eden is a conservation rainforest in Lake Toba whose ecosystem has been remained largely undisturbed by human activities. The so-called virgin rainforest is rich in diversity and natural sites such as bat caves, waterfalls and plunging hills where you can have another view of Lake Toba. This lush rainforest is also home to a rare species of wild orchids endemic to the Toba area (Corybas tobaensis, Bulbophyllum adelphidium, Grammatophylum sp.) that had been nursed and conserved in the site. Travelers can trek and camp to experience the rainforest s richness, and even plant a tree as part of our responsibility to the environment. The conservation area also has an educational campaign called Green Toba as part of an effort to curb deforestation and illegal logging in the region. 45 ASAHAN RIVER RAFTING Scream for The Exciting River Currents the Asahan River track is praised as one of the Best White Water Rafting spot in the World after the Zambesi River in Africa, and Colorado River in the US. Asahan, one the major rivers in North Sumatra province, has its source in the great Lake Toba and offers endless excitement for rafting enthusiasts especially professionals. The outstandingly fast and continuous river is a 22-kilometer course that will definitely give you endless adrenaline rush as its water debit can at times reach up to 120 cubic meter per second. Location: Parapat City to Samosir Island, Samosir Regency, North Sumatra The Story of A Great King and The Dancing Puppet (Sigale-gale) 47 A folk tale says that the great King Sidabutar once ruled most of Samosir Island, before his reign was ended by the Aceh King, who had ruled the biggest Kingdom in Northern Sumatra at the time. The relationship between the two great kingdoms was forged through military strategy and magic as the War General of Aceh was sent to Samosir Island to learn war strategy and magic to conquer the Malacca Strait. Sadly, a big battle in Samosir had cost the life of King Sidabutar's beloved son, plunging him into a long and deep mourning. With his authority across the Samosir Island, he asked the greatest witches to carve a puppet similar to his son's face and summon his son s spirit into the puppet through traditional Batak music. Every time the King missed his son, the witches would play the music to summon his son s spirit into the puppet, which would start dancing to cheer up the King. 48 SAMOSIR : HUTA SIALLAGAN VILLAGE Ulos Weving Village, Lumban Suhisuhi Toruan According to 35 year research conducted by Sandra Niessen, Ph.D, this village is known for its cultural legacy for more than a century: Learn The Story of The Stone of Judgement Batak textile, Ulos. Unfortunately, the fast-changing and competitive nature of the textile industry has cornered traditional Ulos-weaving practices to a critical, and even endangered, status. Ulos-weaving is a tenuously delicate process that takes patience, perseverance and a full-hearted for the weaver. To make a single piece of handwoven ulos demands about 2-4 weeks of non-stop work. In Batak language, the practice of this age-old tradition is called Rangsa Ni Tonun. The Huta Raja village is known for this cultural legacy for more than a century. In this village, the weavers will show you all the process, step-by-step. The huge Maimun Palace and octagonal Great Mosque of Medan dominate the city center, combining Islamic and European styles. 56 ECOTOURISM BUKIT LAWANG Getting Friendly with Orangutans Bukit Lawang is a popular tourist destination located on the edge of the Gunung Leuser National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to numerous bird, plant and mammal species, most famously the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii), which can be seen in the jungle in Bukit Lawang as well as at the daily feedings. Apart from visits to the jungle, Bukit Lawang offers a relaxed atmosphere alongside the banks of the Bohorok river, with many guests staying for weeks or months on end.
