2 Chiang Mai History and Its Importance * Chiang Mai was founded as the capital of Lanna Kingdom (Kingdom of a Million Ricefields) by King Mengrai in 1296 A.D. It celebrated 700 th anniversary in Chiang Mai is now the second most important city in the country after Bangkok and the main city in the northern region.
